For those of you who haven’t been following the #TakeBackWallStreet or #OccupyWallStreet action, today was the first day of Occupy Wall Street. Background on the inspiration for the action can be found here.
A live blog has been running on FDL’s The Dissenter since the action began around noon today. It is night time. A general assembly has apparently voted to try and occupy some public sidewalk legally on Wall Street. That is after the owner of the property they were on reportedly said the protesters might be able to stay and camp. Riot police and police on horseback have had the protest surrounded. It is said that 10 pm ET was the curfew police were imposing and they would all be dispersed from the park area then.
Now, the live blog resumes. [And, here's a Twitter list to follow for latest on the action.]
LIVE STREAM OF ACTION FROM OCCUPY US
11:00 PM A Beginning?

Uploaded with ImageShack.us
10:40 PM Amazing resolution to the day’s action: Protesters are now rolling out sleeping bags. The police vans are taking off. No tear gas. Day two begins at 10 am ET tomorrow.
10:34 PM Rapper Lupe Fiasco sending protesters a mobile system:

If you are not familiar with Lupe Fiasco, here is a great rap for this action (possibly one of the few rap songs with Gaza Strip in the roll call) –
10:27 PM Well, that settles that —

10:20 PM Call to action published by organizers. An excerpt:
We need to address the core facts: these corporations, even if they were unable to compete in the electoral arena, would still remain control of society. They would retain economic control, which would allow them to retain political control. Term limits would, again, not solve this, as many in the political class already leave politics to find themselves as part of the corporate elites.
We need to retake the freedom that has been stolen from the people, altogether.
10:10 PM BIG NEWS —> How the occupation stays alive

9:55 PM Hard to confirm but it appears a property owner might be talking with Mayor Bloomberg about letting protesters stay on property. However, it is unclear if this is what group wants to do, camp on the property. They want to be on Wall Street on a public sidewalk and are likely to make a move if they get an opening.
Park is owned by Brookfield Properties. FDL user DWBartoo posted details on the property:
“Brookfield Office Properties: The company’s roots go back to the 1900s in Montreal … it is currently owned by GMAC Real Estate … in NYC Brookfield owns One Liberty Plaza and The World Finanacial Center ”
9:50 PM Two excellent reporters with insight on the Occupy Wall Street action:

Also, here is a list of the ten worst corporate income tax avoiders. This is part of what Occupy Wall Street is protesting.

Ah, there/here you are, Kevin.
Thank you for staying with this.
DW
Too bad the park didn’t work out. Sidewalks will be tricky to pull off.
We are watching history in the making. I have to keep myself from biting my nails.
I know! The world is watching, too. It’s an important moment that we’re about to see and it will say a whole awful lot about the real character of United States.
No problem. I enjoy this. A lot.
Now…got to start populating this blog with pictures, tweets, etc.
Yes…! Now hop to it young’un…!
Mahalo Nui Loa for all your efforts, Kevin…! *g*
Kevin, can you put a link at the top somewhere to your twitter list?
I am a longtime reader, but have never commented before. Hell, I didn’t even have an account, but if my words of thanks give Athena and all that are there the comfort for the long fight ahead I am glad. We are watching what the msm is ignoring. Thanks and stay warm guys.
My computer finally got fed up with me having so many tabs open, livestream running, etc and crashed. I lost everything I was following. lol.
The must-read twitter link!
http://twitter.com/#!/kgosztola/take-wall-street
Refresh often!
Keep them bankers feet to the fire!! They sure have been practicing “The Shock Doctrine” on the rest of us!!!
Thank you for the kind words, but I’m not actually there. The people that are on the ground (some of them) are in the above link.
If any of you actually know how to use twitter and tweet, can you let them know that we’re cheering them on over here?
Yes
Are you guys seriously retarded? Or are you just that immature and pathetic?
No wonder the ‘progressive’ movement turns out to be of the ‘bowel’ sort. A bunch of Gilligan’s following a pretend map that leads to failure are not likely to ever end up in utopia.
Idiots. Pathetic.
http://www.zerohedge.com/news/obama-takes-class-warfare-next-level-buffet-rule-and-new-millionaire-tax-market-selloff-imminen
Now don’t read it. Oh no, don’t do that. Just keep bending over and crying “more, more, more………more, more mooooore!”
Great you are covering this Kevin! Hope you come down for http://october2011.org.
Where the hell is my fly swatter? Damnit, I thought I had it here just a few weeks ago. There is a horsefly buzzing in here that has been too long on the steamers.
Livestream is back?
No shit.
Anyone else listening to the livestream?
The visual says live but I remember hearing this same thing earlier.
I second that EMOTION! H. Paulson should be shivering in his knickers right about now.
Thanks!
It is off air, or says that it is. Earlier today if I got feed I had no sound. If I had sound, there was no feed.
http://twitter.com/#!/kgosztola/take-wall-street
Aahh…it was showing a feed with audio and claiming to be live a few minutes ago…
Woo-Hoo! My puter is too hot to do twitter, here, and live feed. I can’t get live feed right now though.
Pups please just flag this fuck. The history of said fuck reveals a lot of just nasty comments . . . on and on, nasty every one.
A corporation does something different today then they would done have last week?
Guess they don’t want to be the next focus of attention .
Yeah, but if I can’t make it, I will be here doing this and amplifying every voice that is down in Freedom Plaza putting their body on the line.
I don’t blame the poor thing, you’ve been flaying it without mercy, athena.
You must have had ten or twelve tabs open, and bouncing back and forth and all over …
Keep on keepin’ on …
DW
N great job Kevin, all day long, thanks . . . *G*
Regardless of the outcome of this effort, the national mood continues to darken wrt to Wall St, bankers, investors, etc.
Appreciably.
Any live stream? If none, I will just leave one up re-running old footage of the action. At least people can catch up on what happened.
What rhymes with troll…scroll, no need to feed.
Need to see some of the unions that have bussed people to Banker Conventions show up on Monday or Tuesday. That would give this a necessary boost.
I tried, but the flag/fly swatter is no where to be found at the moment.
I’ve been lurking all day, just had to say thanks to Kevin for the great coverage
and
athena1, you are awesome!
U-Stream doesn’t. At least I couldn’t find it on the site.
Does anybody know what they decided? Stay in the park? Sleep on the sidewalks on Wall Street?

Thank you Kevin. Greatly appreciated.
another twitter link worth following? (the #generalassembly hashtag one?)

Welcome aboard! Got oars?
The msm is in the amusement biz.
There is and has been broad coverage.
No twitter updates coming in. Athena? You got new ones?
good news!
Used to work at 65 Broad in late 90s across from Golden Sacks. Maybe someone can make a citizen’s arrest of Lord Bloodstain of GS.
Power to the people!
One imagines, to turn the subject slightly, that NYC Mayor Bloomberg is cautioning the NYPD to be very careful as he surely does not want his recent prediction that the weakening US economy could produce riots by the young … to become the reality of a police riot when the people, young and older, have determined that Wall Street bears major responsibility for that “weakness” … abetted by the cost of endless war against nations which have posed the US no real or genuine threat, in fact, one war begun on the basis of proven lies… The political fortunes of many politicians are on the line and the next few weeks and months will certainly bring many New Yorkers to the unshakable conviction that Bloomberg likely does not deserve a third term …
Just an idle thought.
The widening ripples of consequence ))))
DW
Welcome. Please stick around and join us. The water here at the lake is fine!
Super job, Kevin!! Awesome!
Our BIGGEST and highest rated tv station in the Sac, CA market was paying attention . . . incredible, a major conservative MSM outlet covered it!
Here, Online, And On 6pm News, Too. Short 30 sec clip/story.
Quite surprising to me!!!
*G*
A Spring To Bloom Perhaps?
Would NOT take much for this Wall St. Anger to capture even the most un or mis educated of we the people.
All is pretty calm. I’m looking for the latest on this action and I just keep finding people on Twitter tweeting out this link, which is good. So, may be calling it a night and I will be back here tomorrow morning with Day Two coverage.
This Sept6-Oct15 global anti-austerity/antibanks revolution is also coinciding with the probable collapse of the euro, too…
Yessir. It do.
Worse comes to worst, Hizzoner could hand out half a million cash to each protester if they’ll go home, and he’d still have more money than all of them combined.
Kewl, thanks . . . see my Sacto linky, also.
Interesting as hell . . . the msm IS covering it!
Well, regardless thanks for keeping an eye on all those twitter doohickeys, and posting links for the technologically challenged like myself.
Rest well, Kevin. Another big day awaits.
*G* x 2!

kewl! TWO ways to smiley!
Firse was colon, dash, right parenthesee
Second was colon, capital letter D
Done, Larue!
Other than the above about Fiasco bringing in generator and sound system there is nothing updating on my twitter feed.
Heck of a job Gosztola!
Non-dilutable assets? Name an asset that doesn’t rise AND fall relative to other asset classes over time. “Non-dilutable assets” is the technical term for what Glenn Beck’s sponsors want to sell you via the mail. The words non-dilutable assets create an oxymoron. You appear to be half of a non-dilutable asset.
Personally, I can’t wait to watch the ultra rich take their non-dilutable assets to a country that engages in less class warfare. Since inequality is greater in the U.S. than any other industrialized country and, when you include inheritance taxes, they tax the rich more heavily, that’s going to be one crowded abandoned oil rig.
Yeah, Euro centricism is on the rocks . . . or at least at the mercy of currents that will sweep it onto the rocks . . .
Life’s gonna get real interesting this winter methinks.
For all of us.

Does hacker culture make one incredibly paranoid and hyperbolic? I love how all these “Anons” are looking at pics and claiming 50,000 were there. Or 500,000. I think they should all focus on what they do to look like a cohesive movement with a plan of action. They need to start getting endorsements for their presence. Once more people indicate support for their principles/demands, which they appear to now have (see the call to action posted), they can ensure this lasts. They can make certain people are on Wall Street every day for the next week at least.
*slidesbeerofchoicedownbar*
Nice.
Come on Larue. Have a heart. He gave us a link that’s funnier than the Onion.
We can’t claim V until the nurse and sailor kiss…
Think they got it. Sleeping in the park, with a police chaperone. And they got pizza. Hope they find a place to recharge their electronic devices so I can post reports from their camp out. Pretty great end for the day.
*narrowseyes*
It’s hard enuff to find reasons to smile MsMolly.
I DON’T want to have to say at some point, KillJoy Was Here!
Guess it completely missed my funny link . . . no heart for the heartless (or banally stupid and nasty).
Now that depends on how long the protest goes on and how many join it, AitchD, might just take all Gates, Buffet, and the Koch brothers have just to reach a weekend truce … never can tell ’bout these things
If Osterity okays the pipeline, then Dee Cee will witness protests right in front of the White House fence …
And, if some of the suggestions earlier, of TarheelDem, OmAli. and others here, are harkened to, there may well be demonstrations all over this land, at banks, media stations, and so on …
Today, a clear “tipping point” has been reached and “authority” and its complicit partners and minions are on notice that real change is not merely being desired … it shall be insisted upon … regardless of the cost … and “authority” had better clearly understand that if it chooses violence, that it will be witnessed and deplored by the entire world.
The people of the world are slowly uniting in their disgust and unwillingness, any longer to tolerate tyranny … whatever flag or religion it might wrap itself within.
DW
LEgendary pic that is . . .
Hey RealDeal msm(olly)! I think the smileys are new bugfeatures when you type the emoticon?
I have been watching the livestreams, and have had CNN or CNN/HLN on the tube without sound. MSNBC is on their weekend schedule of good-guy prison guard vs evil inmate prison shows. My tv refuses to tune to the Faux propaganda channel. So far lots of Charlie Sheen, plane crash, Diana Nyad, and reviews of the CNN/Teabagger freakshow and debate. They show 6 hr old video of scant people, and have one of their Wall st. reporters estimating the crowd at between 100 to 500 people. Unless the police infiltrators start busting windows and the cops start busting heads their will be no live coverage on the msm. If people don’t see tv coverage, nothing happened.
This long term unemployed Peasant supports them. Definitely!
Woot!
Guess they ended up voting to stay in the park?
I sure as shit hope so.
*bows*
Off to some music n pik a while with my Merlot . .
Good for you.
alla time and never get smileys.
I use *g* and
So there. All Ya’ll.
Oh, shit, that’s the first stupid smiley I ever got.
Fuck me.
I’m never smiling again here. Dammmit.
Okay, New Rules. No smiling and no talkin’ about pot.
Got it.
(I really don’t want to have to leave this site, but…)
My comment about his Fox News link being funny was entirely a snark. Should have labeled it.
Can I keep my beer?
I’m rull rull paranoid and suspect some of the anon tweets bringing misinformation might be “bad guys” posing as anon. Maybe.
*adjusts tinfoil hat*
Good. I’m glad. The call to action looks good. Staying overnight earns this action some credibility. Onward.
Agree. It’s called ‘certification’ in Remote Control (1977) by Frank Mankiewicz and Joel Swerdlow.
Don’t get ahead of yourself, DW. These folks have to get past Monday 4:30am with momentum building before it’s real. If there is suppression, it will come right before the protest begins to affect life on Wall Street. For now, the strategy of the city seems to be to let the folks experience camping out for two days and get it out of their system.
But I am hopeful because I see beginnings like in Madison. If you are out to save the middle class from bankers, American flags and patriotism works better than “Smash the State” T-shirts.
umm…
http://twitpic.com/6mksl2
Hope we’re all adults here. lol.
I hope they have a peaceful night. As soon as I heard them start talking about the owner of the property allowing them to stay my paranoid mind started thinking that some time around 3 or 4AM the owners might suddenly rescind their permission and let the cops swarm in with their plastic cuffs and pepper spray. My trust in just about anybody has been shot to hell over the last ten years.
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/09/17/national/main20107772.shtml
I’m glad tonight will be peaceful, but I’m going to hazard a guess that the protesters will be allowed to have their weekend, so as to make the authorities appear “reasonable,” and in hopes that the enthusiasm and numbers will fade away as people decide to prepare for going back to work, and that then the police will get as rough as they have to be to clear everybody out before Wall Street opens for business on Monday. I really can’t see things staying peaceful if the protest lasts into Monday. But I hope it does last, and I hope I’m wrong about the police and Bloomberg’s strategy. This could really be a major historic event. Everybody down there is a hero.

Apologies, TD, you published your comment while I was composing mine. Be delighted to buy you a drink, anytime.
The smileys are not all alike, I see three different mouths so far. At least the program doesn’t convert the emoticons into ‘Have A Nice Day’.
If you want to talk about or mention pot, do it here where you’re always welcome, or talk about anything.
Intuition suggests that what you so ably spoke to, earlier today, will be heeded, TD, and I have watched understanding develop for more than fifty years, with the “conversation” moving along far more briskly than many imagine …
And the images you once again place before us have a power of sausion and connection which have yet to be explored fully in the context which you envision … such strategy as you and OmAli were weaving, and the compelling visions of a better, more humane world developing at the hands and in the hearts and minds of those who share at FDL, my hopefulness matches yours … so long as a cohesive nonviolence and compassion unite the people then the future WILL be ours, all, together. We are witness to the beginning of a true Renaissance of humanity, to the realization of our collective potential and true birthright.
I do not say it will be easy or swift, but I do say it cannot, now, be turned back nor stopped, merely delayed, but the promise has now been experienced by a younger generation, just as those of us experienced it so long, and just a moment, ago …
DW
Oh my. After viewing that, I think I’m afraid to go to sleep lol.
Let’s include that there’s been a proof of concept display wrt tweets. There will be analysis and synthesis by organizers, protesters, and intel. The camel’s metaphor is out of the toothpaste tube mixture now.
And who could blame you? But I think that scenario would make for very bad PR for the property owners. Monday morning will most likely be crunch time, IMO
I deeply suspect the same thing. Regardless of the NYPDs plans, how everything pans out is still way up in the air, tho.
Yeah. They want everything to go and look as un-Egypt-like as possible. At least, that’s what I’d be thinking and planning if I were them.
The fact that there were solidarity demonstrations all across Europe today is HUGE.
HUGE.
Something new is happening.
Response to realitychecker @94
My sense, rc, is that Bloomberg cannot risk violent confrontation for the reasons I put forth @46 … he spoke too soon of riots and frustration with economic conditions to risk having it begin in NYC, as he still imagines that a third term is his … should he conclude otherwise, then it is his “legacy” which will be put, forever, at risk.
If Bloomberg okays police violence, then he is finished in more ways than simply politically … for the tide IS turning and repression only appeals to about twenty percent of the US population, the people are war-weary and feeling none too secure in terms of their personal human security and the appeal of the “Homeland” mentality is worn very thin, indeed.
Things are coming to a head, on many “fronts”, and, if the US sides with Israel against Palestinian statehood or UN recognition, then the US will be further isolated in an increasingly disgusted world which is losing patience with “Uncle Sugar”.
DW
Not sure if you meant to address that to me, but I certainly agree with what you wrote. I’m feeling more hopeful and energized than I have in a long time. Feels good. A very, very good night to all you beautiful people.
Did not know about Europe. Thank you for that. And for all you did today.
I hope if they are going to make a move you are right. Giving the protest another day might be enough to increase the number of people there. Something tells me the ptb don’t give a flying crap about pr when it comes to smashing noncorporate approved protests. The cops and the msm will make it out to be whatever level of false bulshit they need to justify mass arrests.
Good evening, rc, sleep well, a new day dawns, tomorrow.
DW
From your mouth to God’s ears, DW. But Bloomie got away with murder wrt the Rethug convention, so I do feel some trepidation. But, as athena1 says, it is up in the air, and so we shall see what we shall see. I will say this, it sure does feel like a turning of the tide may be beginning. Interesting times, and glad to be alive for it, and in the company of such fine comrades. Sweet dreams of freedom to y’all.

Nighters, DWBartoo.
And hello to you also Rahm. Nice to see you up and worried.
MSNBC finally has a piece up; quotes the NY Daily news a lot.
Demonstrators slept on air mattresses, poor things. Those are the worst in the world as heat is convected away from the body beside the typical, miniscule slow leaks that mean the bed deflates shortly after a person tries to rest on it. But, folks are in good spirits. Hot beverages are great aren’t they?
Now they’re doing a Twitter teach-in. Kewl!

It’s hard as hell to find work in NYC now. All the cool kids have been flocking there for the past 10 years and still trying, plus there’s been a large population who have lived there for decades or more. I think it’s getting like SF where the poor are being pushed out, pushed out of the parts of Brooklyn that are closest to NYC, and the former working class/middle class kids who would move there due to the environment cannot unless they have connections or wealthy parents who can support their living costs while they look for low paying work. The twenty somethings who make it there now are an elite class. They had connections, they had money, they went to Columbia, NYU, Princeton, Pratt, or Parsons. They can afford the rent and they get to live the great life there, they are likely socially liberal, but oblivious to the difficulty the rest of the country is having: Yupsters.
There were young folks living out of cars that left the West Coast and went to NYC thinking they’d find jobs. As folks drop farther into poverty one loses touch. They’re probably be still living out of their cars. I know this was going on in DC when I was there in July (kind sponsors sent me to a peace conference).
Supposedly DC is a bit better than NYC and SF/LA for jobs from what I heard, but better being in the eye of the beholder I guess. When people holding BA’s and MA’s can’t even get the simplest of jobs that formerly only required a high school diploma, if even that, something is really rotten. We’re into year two of this with no sign things are going to get better.
This is why I wasn’t expecting a large turnout, despite there being a large population of socially liberally twenty-thirty somethings there. The ones most sympathetic to economic hardship likely haven’t made it in NYC or are working their asses off to afford the cost of living to keep up with the lifestyle of their rich friends. 10+ years ago I think that crowd would have been larger, even if the corruption of Wall Street was less obvious. The people aware of this who care just can’t make it in NYC like they could before, aside from the local population. However, this call out came from Adbusters. The magazine itself was hott shit 10+ years ago, but has faded, where all the cool kids care about now is how much music they can absorb and to constantly be on the forefront of ever-changing music and fashion trends, at least those lucky enough to study/work and live in NYC.
There’s been a systematic phase-out of jobs across all sectors in parallel with off-shoring, the increased reliance on robots and IT systems (automation) and redesign of the work flow process to use less skilled non-FTEs. Also the shift of the remaining industrial activity predominately to military. The process gestated in the early 1990s and ramped into “production” from 1998 – 2005. Much of the real economy simply was transported overseas. There was never a plan for recovery. Bush’s “jobless recovery” was the after-the-fact notification.
I just see a blue screen. What’s going on?
Good– clear video and audio stream.
The weather in NYC. Rain Tuesday so folks need insulated wet weather gear and to think about keeping the sleeping situation dry.
