Liberato’s Pizza has now officially renamed a pizza after the Occupy Wall Street action happening in a park in lower Manhattan in New York. The pizza is called The Occu-pie and it is 99% cheese, 1% pig.
For anyone going, what is Occupy Wall Street? It is an occupation being maintained by hundreds of US citizens in Zuccotti Park, a private park, that the protesters have renamed Liberty Park. The organizers are using the format known as General Assembly to facilitate organizing. [For more info on that, watch organizer David Graeber talk on Democracy Now!] Through the General Assembly, people make proposals for actions that are deliberated on and then approved or not approved. This is how they decide when to march, whether to comply with police orders, how to raise funds for food, how to get more people to support the occupation and how best to get items donated that the occupation needs to continue.
There is supposedly a direct action that will be happening this evening. Here’s a post from today on how crucial pizza could be to the occupation.
Firedoglake has been live blogging the action since Day One. I put together a list on Twitter to follow that has users that are constantly sending updates from the action. [Send any reports, tips or updates to kevin.gosztola@firedoglake.com ]
Here is a livestream of the action from Global Revolution:
10:40 PM Time to bring tonight’s live blog to a close so here’s the update —
It looks like the occupation will be around for a number of days. They are getting donations for pizza along with donations to purchase other much needed items. The General Assembly is working. Those in Liberty Park are coming together and deliberating about key issues that need to be resolved and addressed so the occupation can continue. There may have been a few hiccups (like, why was someone smoking near a gas can?) but those mounting this occupation have created a very real opening for something amazing to develop. There is worldwide support out there for what those “occupying Wall Street” are trying to do (in quotes because police are not letting them hold any area that is actually on Wall Street).
This action is for the disillusioned in America. The people who are saddled with student loans, those who were laid off as a result of the bailouts and Americans who are part of the poor and working class who are increasingly being asked to shoulder the burden of inequality in America while the corporate elite enjoy control over the direction of politics and wallow in their greed and excess purchased as a result of the wealth they have made from playing the stock market as if it is a poker machine.
Check back tomorrow for Day Four of FDL’s continuing coverage of Occupy Wall Street.
10:35 PM A nod from Michael Moore:

10:30 PM Class war debate, through music by The Kinks
10:00 PM New York Daily News produces one excellent video representing some of the key motivations for holding the occupation:
9:45 PM

8:00 PM No direct action. Dancing though.
7:42 PM Nice set of photos from Day 3 taken by Paul Weiskel. Here are a few of them:

7:39 PM Some structure being instituted.

7:17 PM Why do police think they have the authority to arrest protesters wearing masks? The Gothamist reports NYPD is citing an 1845 law:
The anti-mask statute was passed as a response to the actions of rabble-rousing renters, seeking to prevent “distress sales” of their property by their landlords, dressing up as “Indians” to protect their rights and property. N.Y. Penal Law § 240.35(4) cropped back up in the news 11 years ago, when the KKK petitioned to wear masks protesting in the city. They were prohibited from doing so because of the statute, and sued. The USDC for the Southern District of New York sided with the KKK, and ruled the law unconstitutional, but not before protesters were arrested in 2002 for the same offense.
6:50 PM Scant reporting coming out on the status of the march on Wall Street. Getting hints from messages that protesters are being corralled and blocked off by police but no sense of whether an organized direct action is to take place.
6:45 PM List of things the occupation needs and encourages people to donate or help them raise money to purchase.
6:35 PM Video of march to Wall Street.
6:25 PM Good explainer for anyone looking to get a grasp of the basic details on Occupy Wall Street. Alyson Ann Cina writes:
We are using the global tactics of the Arab Spring, and of the 2011 Spain “Democracy Now” movement: first, a large-scale occupation and protest. Second, we aim to propose a series of solutions to these problems through grassroots participatory democracy based on people’s assemblies and consensus decision making.
Citizens are taking democracy to the streets, and they are not leaving any time soon. This is not a one-day protest. The occupation is scheduled to continue for the next month at least.
6:17 PM March stepping off. May end with direct action.

6:10 PM Occupation has gas confiscated by police and now is asking for gas donation.
5:50 PM Bullying from police

5:47 PM Solidarity with bank whistleblowers

5:30 PM Unintentional comic relief -

4:46 PM Following the action closely… Direct action committee is meeting now and developing plans for a march on Wall Street that is likely to lead to confrontation with police.
Earlier updates from the day’s live blog
4:18 PM General Assembly shows how this occupation is maturing. Organizers have called upon people to make sure they are giving National Lawyers Guild plenty of notification before taking off on marches. They also are letting others know that arrests may make good video but if they post the video that can be used against the person being arrested. Therefore, they should get consent from those who were arrested first before posting.
4:00 PM Okay — this blog announced at 3:30 PM a direct action would happen but the action didn’t happen. The General Assembly is taking place and after the Direct Action Committee will meet. They will develop plans for the march. Then the direct action will happen about 4:30 or 5 pm.
The National Lawyers Guild (people who wear green hats at protests and act as legal observers) have expressed frustration that marches are spontaneously happening and they cannot get observers down to scene in time to help defend rights of protesters from arrests. Protesters are working on doing better at planning ahead.
3:40 PM Everything appears to be behind schedule about a half hour. The direct action was to be in progress. But, the General Assembly has to happen first. A group has not stepped off yet so I suspect we have until 4:15 PM ET. Then, direct action may take place.
3:39 PM Jason, who was arrested for “chalking” earlier, claims on Livestream from occupation site that police basically told him it was “bullshit” to have been arrested. It took an hour for him to be processed. Some officers told him after he was done at the station how to get back to the park area. And, here’s some important news: Some working for NYPD told them that the public-private nature of the park means the police cannot really do anything to get rid of those camping.
3:18 PM Two injured in police brutality in “Walk to Brussels” action in France. The organizers were going to set up an encampment. The police surrounded the demonstrators: gasses and batons were used on them. Here’s video feed. Organizers were expressing solidarity with Occupy Wall Street.

The cops appear to have developed a fairly coherent strategy for disrupting the protest and dispersing the good guys-take away the energy source. I wonder if Lloyd Blankfein’s paying overtime?

Can US haz just(ly) 10% (2 Million CITIZENS) from the 20 Million New York megalopolis population?
This is where you need a liaison with the NYPD to negotiate these supplies through. Got to deal with every little picky issue and politely push back enough that they obey the real law. Diplomacy. Even if it means an action to haul the supplies in by creating a chain of porters.
You got that many NYC friends on FB? Go for it. Tell them to bring their families.

I don’t know. Frustrating. SabzBrach has been great too and we lose her in next 24 hours. She’s getting on a plane to somewhere.
Liberato’s Pizza now tweeting other news stories on Occupy Wall Street. Pretty great. These people turned the business into an ally.

I sent out tweets to both, thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks to you. I suspect that there are a bunch of those folks already there.
Out again for a bit.
That’s my guess too. If nothing else maybe it brings them into the fold a little on twitter more. It never hurts to have more people communicating on social media as well as at the occupation itself.
The livestream crawl mentioned folks in Liberty Plaza (apparent address: 111 Trinity Place, New York, New York; map, photo, other location data)

Looks like a quite a few from what I can tell. Nothing wrong with people 40 and older voicing anger, but it’s always positive to see the younger people as those are the ones who will sustain movements.
Someone want to tell her that those times are actually 9:30 and 4:00?
No word about any direct action. Someone would have tweeted it if it had happened, I think.
Yes I do not think a direct action is happening. False alarm.

Sounds like they started having too much fun to spoil the mood!
Having fun certainly will make it more comfortable for more folks to come out and increase their numbers.

Totally.
They sound in high spirits tonight.
Looks like the gas crisis is at least temporarily averted?
Yeah, they really do.
Missed the action…what happened with the smoking around the gas storage. They can use the generator now?
We should probably open up a debate on FDL about what Occupy Wall Street is trying to do. Invite all FDL users to say what they are doing right and wrong. Talk about the pros and cons. It may be good if someone does this as an myFDL post. I would like to maintain support for this live blog and make sure FDLers like to see it keep going. So, if I get a sense of where the community is at, I can know what issues or aspects of the action I need to really track. Also, I hope to start doing interviews with people there so I would know what to address.
Looks like the gennie’s up and running, and they’re only allowed to have one container of refill there at a time or something? Little info. Hard to say.
Worth putting out to my very diverse FB friends. Well argued.
Thanks for the continuing contributions to the Organizations list.
They are having fun:

Thanks for writing the diary!
Do you mean a diary that solicits advice from older, experienced activists to pass along to the younger ones on Wall Street?
Wow! Thanks, Kevin. That was a quick clean up on isle 13!
Not into marketing corporate infotainment channels, but Michael Moore will be on Maddow tonight. I suspect, and hope, he’s going to talk about these protests and encourage people to support them. He’s commented about them in his last few tweets. Suppose you can tweet @MMFlint and tell him to please talk about the protests. Not sure if he’ll get them before he goes on, but worth a shot.
Police cut power supply and have surrounded the park.
foot notes say Wikileaks van pulled over.
Like this idea. I think it’s best if the myFDL diary really has different topics or a overall theme than this. If I come up with a good way to do this I’ll post it, but not sure how to do that right now.
Back online. People that were sent out to get gas cannot get back into the square area. They will live stream as long as batteries last, (probably two hours).
Whoever is tweeting that is confused, I think. That all happened Sat night, and none of the ön the ground”sources are confirming.
Just said they may get deliveries soon. They want more people to feel more secure and keep up the faith.
I’m not sure what Kevin had in mind but I would think we wouldn’t want to necessarily put ourselves in a position where we’re giving advice to them (especially since many are pretty experienced themselves). If I had to say, people here have the same questions and confusion about what to do as the people on the ground which is completely natural and not a bad thing.
I think just a discussion about what this protest means, where this anti-Wall Street anger might be best channeled in the coming months after this has gone. Some strategic talks I think would be helpful here for everybody.
It’s on live feed right now!
Oh, shit!
Media meeting in a few minutes.
Well, that sounds like a recipe for FDL infighting/debate, not particularly important or useful for those out in NYC. Not to build a straw man, but “You guys need to be nonviolent!!!” sort of advice will come off condescending.
I think perhaps sharing personal experience, what you think worked and didn’t from that is more useful and interesting to read without coming off as an armchair protest strategist. And keep in mind they’re getting swarmed with information, so being long-winded will not be helpful either.
They seriously need those batteries and chargers now!
Kevin, when my friend shows back up here I’ll ask. I believe they posted something earlier on the morning post.
Scrawl just said two were arrested for trying to enter Bank of America.
Meeting is about to be called to order.
Scrawl where? Are you at the protests?
Okay, evidently the media meeting is not being broadcast for us.
Live Feed. You can view it on the live feed at the top of this post.
It would be helpful if someone could get clarity on the general assembly’s understanding of its practical objective. Holding a long-term presence on Wall Street is not a bad objective. Sustaining that for a long time will be difficult enough. But the implication of an occupation is that something granted would get folks to leave. Is there a clear statement of that yet? Or is it just being developed through the general assembly process?
This is a situation in which although the national and global situation is urgent, there is no urgency to come to premature closure on objectives as long as folks are still in Liberty Square.
The only suggestion that I would make to the folks in the square is getting labor comfortable with folks attending as particular unions on their time off. And an increasing number of American flags. Marching with American flags treated with respect will do an incredible amount toward making this news, getting folks out, and protecting against police suppression. And it plays against stereotype.
They said earlier this afternoon it is being developed. They said that the huge diverse group has made many lists and they are working on first the similarities of all the lists from the people.
OK. Great. I have a sense of where they are in the process. They are doing this very thoroughly it seems.
Typically an occupation does imply some sort of demand or set of demands that need to be met to end the occupation. I don’t get the sense that’s the case (or even that people present want it to be) as this idea got so much inspiration from the occupations of this year that often didn’t have specific demands other than stop being so corrupt. This was due not to a lack of actual things to make demands about, but more about the severity of corruption and wrongdoing by various governments on behalf of the wealthy.

Right now they are wasting battery time with this live feed. We are just hearing conversation between 4 or 5 people. Chit Chat, nothing important.
Wish they would have changed the live feed over to the general assembly. May get updates soon.
Didn’t you share a link about organizations and how to organize earlier?
But rather the overwhelming numbers of things worthy of making demands about!
Okay, they just had a quick update but I could not hear it at all. A young woman with Indian type accent and she was not loud enough to get. okay maybe something coming up now.
PP, I’ve been out for a while, but my bet is that they’re charging the batteries. So they’re pretty much tethered there until the battery is full.

Seriously, thank you. LS often makes my computer crash.
Anybody know what direct action were they considering taking? Did that ever get figured out?
Vlad is back on and says that the people sent out to get gas cannot get back in which they think are police tatics. Will run livestream as long as batteries last maybe 2 hours.
2 hous of power left.
Stream is down.
They are beggin for more people to come join them. Need more in numbers.
Says they’re working on fixing it. This must be recorded.
Haha.
Says it’s from 8:25.
Why legal observers are needed. They should collect donations to fund keeping a lawyer on site.
Power has been cut because police seized the gasoline. Trying to keep us updated. Will put camera on tripod so that people can view what goes on in the square.
Might be back, not sure. Time stamp says 9:40.
Just a group of folks waiting around for now.
From what I understand the General Assembly happened but was not on video. They are trying to update the General Assembly stuff and put it on the website.
They’re out of gas?
Thanking people for sending food.
Thanks to all for the food that has been sent in. From all around the world
That was from earlier. They had streaming problems so threw up a previous segment.
I’m still unclear about the cause of the seized gas. Was it some chump lighting up a cigarette over the equipment, or was the gas taken as an intimidation/media control maneuver by the police?
And they’re gone again.
Yes. They sent out people to get more but they can’t get back into the park because police won’t allow them back with the gasoline.
Showing some footage from this afternoon.
Official story is the cigarette. However, Vlad said earlier that is was probably a way to intimidate.
Don’t know about NYC laws, but they might be able to find more people certified by talking to the construction guys. Experience tells me that if someone wants to mess you about having a cert. person, that person may need a relief cert. person. Long story short, many construction guys are a possible resource for this type of cert.
Next GA about to start. Livestream keeps cutting out.
Vlad is giving a tour of the park before the afternoon GA. And it’s flipped over to march footage.
Ah, it’s arrest footage.
I think a legal observer was attempting to get the reason for the arrest, but was not being responded to.
Compilation of arrest footage for Sept. 19, 2011 on now …
Hmm. They took the gas for safety reasons, but it just so happens that taking gas cuts off the livestream.
Livestream is out again. They are showing arrest footage now.
Athena, please keep twitter updates coming. I can’t run all three on my laptop at the same time.
MzChief, …Okay livestream back on.
GA is up. I think.

I’ve been frustrated with Code Pink before, but I’m willing to forgive and forget so long as they aren’t out there shilling for the Democratic Party. Not sure how the organization works though. Perhaps it’s just the NYC group that wanted to be involved. Anyhow, they’re out there.
This is frustrating. Gimme some good news.
Twitter might be more useful for info right now. Anyone have a good link? I can’t use that one Kevin posted earlier.

Stream is showing afternoon arrests again.
I like that idea. There’s a general store – I think it’s in Hana – that has a blender hooked up to a stationary bike. You want a smoothie, you blend it yourself. They got a lot of people in Liberty Plaza, and it’ll definately insulate them from capricious police activity around gasoline.

Yeah, the nice thing about a bicycle-generator is that it’ll work rain or shine. Just need to feed the human. I mean, it’s not going to win any power conversion efficiency awards, but even so, it’s ideal for static protest environments.

Somethings back, I think.
Night, showing police in a group. Nevermind, it’s gone back to afternoon footage.
Lower Manhattan is not Puerto del Sol. Sometimes you can only do what you can until you can make other institutional arrangements. But the point the writer makes is well taken. We need to be open-eyed about the way we are sometimes caught in the system.
A first step that I would recommend is that you move all of your banking (if you still do that sort of thing) to a credit union. If you have a way of qualifying, a public employees or union credit union would be preferable. There are also open credit unions run for neighborhoods or city self-help.
Anna Katherine can project. Stream is now showing Rage Against the Machine’s Bulls on Parade, the debut of the human microphone, supposedly.
Yep plus the labor to put the gear in place as needed.
Niters, Kevin.
Just checked Indymedia and nyc.indymedia for the first time in ages. They were the essential site for protest coverage during and after Seattle, but never adapted to web and social media changes. It was all up to volunteers and quite frankly, not necessary anymore, so I can see why people aren’t putting effort into it. Twitter serves the primary reason people visited IMC before, better (more info from many people) and worse (sometimes too much info to keep up with during unfolding events). Though it’d be nice if Twitter were an open source project, same with Facebook, it’s useful for now.

A voice that sounds EXACTLY like Lacy MacAuley started yelling “DON’T say fuck the police! They’re in the same struggle we are!! I don’t support that message!”
And then the singer changed the lyrics to “KISS the police!”

Damn. Livestream is down again.
Peace Officers, EMS, firefighters and many, many public servants are struggling to keep their jobs, their hard-earned pensions and not just in the US. We are in this together!
Better. I have to agree with this:
Thanks to everyone who has stayed with this noble human resistance.
Especial thanks to Kevin, athena, TarheelDem, mzchief, dash, yellowsnapdragon, realitychecker, username, Peasant Party, and MayDaze …
See you all on the morrow

I wouldn’t say the police are on the protesters side yet. Otoh, it’s just dumb tactically to incite them when you don’t have many people. They’re there, saying they suck isn’t going to make them go away, be less harassing, or encourage any of them on a personal level to side with the protesters. The protests are not about them anyway.
Here’s a video showing how Lacy got snatched into an unmarked, non-police van by plainclothes officers while peacefully protesting a while back.
She is a HERO.

Last RT from me tonight. See y’all tomorrow.
In solidarity.
That’s hair-raising. Is she a US or Canadian citizen? Please note that unfortunately there have been a lot of questions about the Toronto jurisdiction for more than a decade. Then this incident captured by The real News was during the G20 for which it appears unidentified persons were brought in a way similar to the recent strike-breaking incident with the Northwestern US longshoremen (see “Special Response Corporation“) and performed paramilitary actions against the public. I see faces on film footage. Are these union members? What do the city’s public officials have to say? What is the deeper story? This has to be investigated by groups like CCRJustice.Org (US) and CCIJ.Ca (Canadian) that maybe be monitoring already. Real Peace Officers are city employees and usually union. They are tasked with serving and protecting the public. There are many, many reasons to have attorneys and legal observers such as the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) on the ground coordinating with demonstrators.
need tri-corner hats &gadsden flags(don’t tread on me),,,, cops will go home.
