Fifty to eighty people have been arrested in New York City as part of the Occupy Wall Street protest. The NYPD is cracking down on those involved in the action and the NYPD is surrounding Liberty Park (Zuccotti Park) where people have been occupying for the past week. Suspicions are high with many believing those in the park will be forced to disperse or arrested.
Firedoglake’s live blog of #OccupyWallStreet continues. Here is a Twitter list that can also be followed for the most recent updates from the scene.
LIVESTREAM OF OCCUPY WALL STREET VIA GLOBAL REVOLUTION
11:10 PM Police violence makes NY Daily News front page.
11:07 PM Recorded two interviews that will run in tomorrow’s blog. One with a bystander who witnessed the mass arrest of people at today’s protest, one with Paul Weiskel, photographer, whose photos I have been posting in the live blog.
11:06 PM The crowd at Zuccotti Park right now

10:14 PM There’s a library at the occupation

10:06 PM Ryan Devereaux of Democracy Now! calls in to WBAI and shares his insight. He says the NYPD’s handling of the protest was a continuation of tactics used during the Troy Davis march on Thursday night. He witnessed a woman being pulled over a barricade violently and then pulled to the ground and then somehow thrown back over the barricade where she hit her head on the pavement. He shares NYPD confrontations have not been focus of Occupy Wall Street. That is not why people are out in the streets. It is “difficult to tell” the NYPD’s strategy. The police are relaxed currently but earlier it appeared they were going to move in and disperse the camp late in the night. And he talks about the nets that the police have been used to corral protesters.
9:09 PM Occupation has lined the park with candles

8:47 PM Video of Marissa Holmes, who was part of the livestream crew, being targeted and arrested:
8:43 PM Now at the park, police arriving on north and south side. Reportedly around 20 police cars.

8:10 PM Paul Weiskel, who has been taking great photos since Day 1, has a new set up with photos of today’s police intimidation, harassment & brutality along with photos of the march.

8:07 PM A march to a precinct station to show solidarity with people arrested probably about to be surrounded by police netting. Those in the netting are probably going to be arrested. Unless the police choose a different tactic for crowd control…
7:54 PM This is the scene right now. Police moving in. They have nets. Report the police scanner feed that people all over the world have been listening to has been cut.

7:47 PM Fire department support for protesters:

7:41 PM Round-up of press coverage via FDL user Cahokia:
-Protesters march in Manhattan, criticizing Wall Street
-Over 50 ‘occupiers’ cuffed in Union Sq. chaos
-Police arrest ’50′ at Occupy Wall Street protests amid claims of aggressive tactics
7:09 PM The New York Observer has picked up on the fact that one person is tweeting from a van or bus of people who have been arrested. Here are some of the tweets from @PulseofProtest (all tweets from the past hour):

7:08 PM Activist in tears because she just wants to use the bathroom, has her hands ziptied, reportedly been in the van for 2 hrs
7:01 PM March on Broadway, earlier:

6:40 PM Roundup of earlier reporting from the scene (includes video)
Village Voice, a local newspaper, reports on what happened during the afternoon.
Mass arrest at 13th near 5th earlier this afternoon

6:38 PM The scene at Liberty Park right now.

6:37 PM Press conference
6:35 PM Tune into Kenneth Lipp talking about what is happening in Liberty Park, calling attention to the gross police presence. Watch here. He is going to walk around and show off the police presence. Streaming video.
6:30 PM ABC, FOX & WPIX news vans now on the scene.
6:28 PM 80-100 arrested today. Media team members targeted for arrest.
6:18 PM

6:13 PM Police at the park via @jeffrae

6:11 PM Press conference planned for now should be happening. Here is a photo of the scene moments ago where toddlers are at. The occupation setup a child care center so everyone could down and this could be a family affair.

6:02 PM Women maced by NYPD, person beat up by police in the middle of the street

Thanks Kevin!
Well, well, well…
From chatter on the LS: Police planning some action after nightfall.
Livestream: overheard cop saying their instructions are to wait until nightfall.
I’ve watched Livestream today; however, this is the first times I saw the police actually mace the innocent female protesters. It’s like living through the 60s.
Great work, Kevin — please keep this coverage going.
o gawd, how this doesn’t mean badness is about to happen.
Solidarity!!!

LS – reciting and calling back instructions for how to handle arrest.
Not to mention it’s harder to livestream, video, photograph in the dark.
Imagine how bad the police reaction would have been without twitter and cameras.
If they really want it to be too dark to video, might wait for end of civil twilight at 7:17.
People’s mic. Preparing people for the night. That is excellent. I hope all 1000 or so are involved in this.
And it is captured on the livestream so there is no question what their plan is.
The power of transparency.
I noticed on the livestream about 15 minutes ago when they were showing videos from someone’s laptop that the NYPD are filming, too. They’ve got guys walking around with cameras just filming everything.
Didn’t stop the police from being heinous, violent assholes. In the video the woman showed, while cops were taking a guy to the ground, the NYPD polo-wearing guy w/camera turned away deliberately.
Hadn’t thought of this:
Is there are rogue group at the police station? Provacateurs?

Ask someone who was that the Chicago Democratic Convention in 1968. An honest-to-goodness police riot, swinging at everything in sight–including the MSM.
“here!”
That should bring out the FDNY
Sheesh. I can’t hear the livestream due to blown speakers, but in the chat next to it, someone said that an editor at CBC told them that there will be no coverage due to “threats of funding cuts.” Don’t know how credible, but wouldn’t be surprised.
You thought umbrellas were dangerous? Were you at Chicago Dem Convention 1968? That would make you, like, an original Original Firebagger!
Looks like 1-2K people in the park right now.

Buses is a bad sign.
Somebody plays a mean trumpet (or trombone) and is doing an improvisational riff on “God Bless America.” Guess we all miss the concert tonight at 9 PM EST.
Too bad. I was hoping they would all sit down at Liberty Park and accept arrest together.

I guess it won’t be LS’d
I don’t know if they can do it, but I would suggest groups of 150 going out of the Park for hours at a time so they can return and occupy after dark. Just waves of returning groups so that the cops can’t get them all at once.

The arrests story is on the front page of the websites of the NY CBS and ABC stations, as well as the New York Post newspaper.
The same media that never even acknowledged anything has been happening for the last week.
Too big to ignore now, if the movement can survive the night in the park.
Good decision, regardless.
Uh oh.
That was Kris above @72 who said Dissenter rocks.
IMO cops are trying to intimidate them into leaving…

Mzchief, this one needs to make it to FDL, big time. I don’t know if you might do a diary upon it, but at the very least it should be forwarded to David Dayen. Thank you, mzchief.

Didn’t say it was great, overall, better than expected (at least to me).
I suppose anything that threatens the status quo by way of motivating the populous is offensive content.
They’re running scared.
They know they’ll all be on YouTube. It’s not like the old days.

OK, you may have a point. Depends on the statutes in NYC.
Methinks that somewhere someones are negotiating something. That’s typically what would be going on indirectly or directly behind the scenes.
In other words”We own and control the earth down to the last square inch.”
The NYPD certainly is going to behave themselves with TV trucks still there… but what happens when they leave?
Especially given the announced support of some unions.
It looks like there are about 1,000 people in the park still.
Private ownership of public space is like ownership of free speech and assembly rights in a shopping center of shopping mall. Unless the PtB think that treating it as public space is more advantageous. The notice has aspects of both.
Yeah, that’s the question.
Mayor’s number: 212-788-1400.

Yes, it’s live now.
Yes, pretty good report…except they said the protest is organized by a group called “the General Assembly.” Ha ha..they must have their top reporters on this story.
Needs: Blackberry chargers, power strips, and one more item I didn’t catch.
Having thought about it, the issues are:
1. They had permission of the owner of the park – has the owner rescinded this?
2. And has the owner posted the sign, or the police?
3. Is the presence of the posted notice sufficient for police to remove the occupiers?
Not an exhaustive list. All legal questions, they should get NYCLU on the case.

Yes, the paper handed out before the march was looked at by the legal team. The sign was then posted as the protesters were marching. SabzBrach came back early and found the sign. The police escalation happened. So they need more legal advice.

Exactly. Rule #1: Use language to correctly frame the story. Wall Street occupiers are communists, hence, General Assembly.
They are holding up copies of the front page of tomorrows Daily News. They are on it!
Kevin is on the webcast now.
If I’m remembering right, the General Assembly in some form existed before the occupation. But calling such a loose association of individuals an “organization” is kind of stretching it.
“Police clashes with ‘Occupy Wall Street’ protesters as hundreds march on Union Square” (NYDailyNews.Com, Sept. 24, 2011)
LS — They were holding up front page of tomorrow’s Daily News. Obviously about the demonstration, but I couldn’t make out the headline.
Where did they get that anyway? must have friends of friends!
Generator now back up.
LS – It’s Wail St.
When the MSM finally showed up the police backed off.
OMG!
Springsteen
Is the corporate media still on the scene?
No, I notices references throughout the day on Twitter feed.
such as, #occupyLA had a good meeting of the General Assembly.
Whenever I saw General Assembly mentioned, I thought it must be representatives of US Uncut or Adbusters coordinating efforts on the ground.
It’s telling if all the NYT knows about this they learned today.
They chatted earlier with some media folks.
Yeah I think they were part of the organizing for this earlier protest:

NYPD is releasing some of the earlier arrested and they are coming back to the square.

Bummer. Wail St. as a headline is not complimentary. That’s a standard response to leftist protests, that we complain and don’t offer positive solutions. In times like these they (MSM) don’t look at any of the positive solutions Progressives offer and get rejected.
Kevin – The New York Daily News front page.
I don’t know about y’all but this camera shoots the trees and stuff that goes blurrr. I prefer the one at the media center table.
See me @336. There’s an image.
The newly released may give a report on their incarcertation when they get back around to the cameras.
Luke Richardson is back. Woo-Hoo! Go, People. Thanks for the calls and support.
All must remember that the most important thing is that this is hopefully not just a one-time protest; it should be the start of a movement. It will hopefully influence the thinking of those involved for years to come.
This is really just sort of stage zero, I hope.
This is a good beginning. don’t forget the demonstration on Oct. 6th in DC.
Off to check some of the NYC local newscasts and see if they show anything.
Oh, I see. But, still, the NYT should have more accurately described the organizers of this so far week-long demonstration. Saying it’s organized by a New York group called the General Assembly minimizes the significance. I mean it came out of UK Uncut! And it’s in other cities, for god’s sake. The NYT is making it sounds like some local event.
I’m out for the night, folks. Keep fighting the good fight. Firedogs rule the toobz.
Only one line of police officers around the perimeters right now. per conversation at the media table
And then the global revolution on October 15.
Goodnight!
Cops are not communicating with the protesters. Speaker says it appears they are going to allow them to stay the night.
People are setting up camp. Effects of sleeping on concrete are wearing on them.
Encouraging everyone to come to Liberty Park.
I believe that tracing that sort of credit would not be helpful to building a larger movement. I suspect that the decision was to put the general assembly front and center in the press session that the media committee had with the media this afternoon.
Beware of the 4am raid.
showing a flicker page with police brutality today.
On the projection screen:
True. I can’t stay up that late. I’m no longer 20 something. Besides, I’ve been working on putting away fruits and veggies for the winter today. Legs feel like wet towels.
Yep.
Are there still media crews at Liberty Park?
It’s ironic, but a good irony. The media ignored till some people got hurt, then they couldn’t help but pay some attention. Now, their attention should keep the occupiers safe, and allow the movement the time it needs to grow. Cover-up fail. I’m tickled, and going to bed. Good night to all you beautiful folks. Dream of actual freedom, Firepups.
NOTE to TWO ANGELS: Gear is working and thank you.
Hmm…that’s interesting. Strategic…
thanks!
Interesting.

arrested fellow giving his story of being arrested. They moved them to different precints. No medical care for those injured and bleeding. He was not on sidewalk as reason.
I posted in the live blog. From my little experiment of doing podcasting to cover Occupy Wall Street, I got two solid interviews. I will post the audio for people to listen to tomorrow.
And it’s authentic. The general assembly has worked through some stuff that starts institutionalizing a grassroots process in the US. As opposed to being limited to three or four initiating organizations. It starts to work through ironing out unity as the movement grows.
Lead story on WCBS New York 11pm was about the “clash with protesters” or something to that effect. I think they tried to stay fairly neutral, with statements from both the police and interviews with marchers. The part I found most incongruous was when they had a phoned in statement from some “security expert” explaining that police will use mace or pepperspray when they feel threatened or endangered… while the video of the corralled female marchers getting sprayed was playing… sure didn’t look like they were “threatening” the police to me.
Was the 2nd story on WNBC New York, mostly was the police’s line that the arrests were for “obstructing traffic” or “resisting arrest” (how does one “resist arrest” unless they are already trying to arrest you?) The African-American studio reporter actually looked a bit uncomfortable while he was speaking, it might be his job to say it but I’m not sure he really believed it himself.
Sad to say, a lot of us (including me on occasion) don’t even look up there, we get caught up in the comments. That’s why I put it down here.
Okay. Reports that the police were disorganized. Fellow says they gave them cheese sandwiches at the prescint and then released them.
All of them? Everyone arrested today?
I missed an update and posted it in the thread too.
I missed the podcasts almost entirely since my ‘puter is rearing up from too many tabs being open. Glad they will be posted tomorrow.
The chemical weapon which is called tear gas is a somewhat non-polar (think oily) substance which is heated to become a vapor. Oil and water don’t mix.
Applying vinegar (a water soluble chemical which is “polar” – and hence capable of carrying an ionic charge) to the fabric handkerchiefs helps create a surface layer of polar charged molecules which slightly repel the nonpolar tear gas molecules, slowing diffusion of the molecules. Of course, this works best if the handkerchiefs are cotton, rather than made of some oil-based fabric.
Milk of magnesia (and other liquid antacids) work to help decrease pain from the chemical weapon called tear gas, the chemical weapon called mace, and the chemical weapon called pepper spray. Antacid/water solutions help with exposure on skin, mucous membranes, and – by report – eyes.
The good folks at the Black Cross Health Collective in Portland did trials (on Portlandia peeps who volunteered as test subjects!) to compare topical remedies for the chemical weapon called pepper spray.
In the US, work on remedies for chemical weapons was jump-started by the medical collective for the WTO Seattle protests – still the largest mass chemical weapons attack in the history of the United States. The medical team for the 2000 A16 IMF World Bank/IMF protests built on that work. Since then – thanks in greatest part to Black Cross’ work, subsequent street medic collectives around the world have gone on to improve and expand on evidence based heath care and first aid for mass demonstrations. The Anonymous Street Medics have created the most recent primer I know of. Their primer also lists the local street medic groups around the country. Check out your local street medic – they’re everywhere from Bay Area Radical Health Collective in the Bay Are to the two separate groups in NY. If there’s no group in your region, think about starting your own – solidarity heals!

Oh yes, we’ll all have to stay tuned.

As stuck at 304 views? They’ve both shown that number over here all day (except before they went quasi-viral and had fewer views.)
Odds are that 80%+ of the NY Daily News readers tomorrow will thank the cops for how they acted. But at least it will penetrate some skulls that SOMETHING is happening.

Thanks, PeasantParty – and thanks for your great work tonight!

LS is still down. Calling mike check and someting is going on.
Thanks, Doc.
What about pepper stay, that’s what the NYPD is using?
Edit: sorry see you covered it.
Athena,
You catching the tweets?
That is so interesting. I want to know more. How did you learn about this? Were you involved early on? You could email if you like mkelly.dc at gmail, though I’m turning in for the night very soon.
Livestream is down again. They are showing reruns from earlier.
I think we have, too. 80 arrests isn’t ignoring.
Femblogger,
You are a new face here. Good to have you.
We’re in category 1 of the “they fight you” level of the Gandhi scale
Occupy SF: Union Square (PDF)
I’ve been livestreaming. Read the previous thread about the discussions.
Not right now. Need me to?
Only if you are going to be here a while. It’s almost a quarter of midnight here and I am beat.
Can’t believe the number of viewers of the live stream was over 7000 today. Like I said on twitter, if the #OccupyWallStreet protest had only been September 17th, it would have been deemed a failure and would have increased hopelessness among the grass roots left. Instead, they stuck with it, and stuck with it, through rain, arrests, harassment, and the numbers attending increase, the coverage is increasing.
I really hope this is the future of our protests. The 1-3 day protests do not work, hence desperation in which some felt some disorder was required in order for it to be covered and to make the biggest impact in the short time they had there. I understand high numbers can not be sustained for a long time, but a moderate presence over a week or more is better than 10,000+ for one day on a weekend. Civil disobedience would help, but more people are needed. It’s risky now, and probably near impossible to do more than harass normal workers in a city like NYC where cops are everywhere and so much public activity is illegal.
NYPD Starting to Wild Out on Occupy Wall St Protesters

(NY arts magazine)
Something’s phishy.
Today’s protest *might* have been as high as 10-15K people. Pretty hard to ignore.
Too bad the first day’s turnout wasn’t as large.
Agreed. I’m sure folks on the ground know they need to maintain their security teams but I hope some folks can stay here during swing shift.
Unfortunately, yes. The protesters need to stay out there though. It’s not NYPD vs protesters as the media likes to report (especially tabloid and right wing). Only persistence will get that through to people.
On livestream?
Yes, I am new. thanks!
Both cameras are out of the livestream. I can’t do all those things at once on my computer.
LA is tough because it’s a suburb city. The way the population is spread out and most get around by cars just makes building protest momentum extremely difficult. They may be able to get large numbers to protest a big event, like the DNC protests in 2000 (RATM even played live for free, haha), but I can’t see it working like #OccupyWallStreet has. Wish them and others in similar cities luck though.
Is livestream live again?
Welcome to the Lake!!!
Those young folks are awesome. Brave and doing it for all of us. Keep up the support.
IMO it will build. As they say on twitter, it is “trending.” Sadly, twitter is part of the establishment and so is (IMO) suppressing the size of the trend in its own media.
Looks to me like this has legs. Feels like the movements when I was young.
Okay, Folks. Got to put this tired body to bed. Keep the fires burning, Pups!
Thanks…I certainly will.

Police Agree to Revisions in Crowd Control at Protests

Looks warm there tonight on livestream. Lots of people in tank tops.
This is the guy that was tweeting while in custody:
That many?
It’s not your opinion, proof of it is here: http://trendsmap.com/topic/%23occupywallstreet
Rats: I goofed on most of the linkies (and BARHC’s site isn’t working tonight).
I’ll try again:
PSR-LA’s “Tear Gas Clouds – and Chronic Health Problems” is no longer up at PSR-LA, but can be downloaded at http://www.bvsde.paho.org/bvsacd/cd57/teargas.pdf
Black Cross Health Collective’s excellent site is still up. Going to their info on pepper spray trials will take you to the rest of their fine work: http://www.blackcrosscollective.org/page7.html
Anonymous Street Medics’ primer is at: demaa.org/sites/default/file/63285473-anon-medic-v1.pdf
When researching chemical weapons for the Seattle and IMF/WB med teams, as well as for the PSR-LA report, I found a huge amount of information and research in an exhaustive 1998 draft report for the European Parliament: An Appraisal of Technologies of Political Control. I used to be able to find it at the EU, but Cryptome has put up an easily located copy here: cryptome.org/stoa-atpc.htm
In addition to covering chemical weapons, the report also exhaustively covers “less often lethal” weapons such as plastic bullets. The report also makes clear that people in Occupied Palestine as well as Northern Ireland and other regions had been contending with chemical weapons attacks decades before the WTO protests. That wasn’t widely recognized when Earth First! activists had pepper spray painted on their eyes in Eureka California or a few years later at the Seattle protests which defeated the WTO.
During the popular uprising in Iran a couple of years ago and during this year’s Arab Spring protests, it’s been very gratifying to see the global network of social justice activist medics drawing on their colleagues’ work around the world – and in the process adding more knowledge. Information is power!
I’m guessing many more. Probably 2-4X whatever last Saturday’s turnout was. Hard to tell for sure without overhead shots, tho.
thanks, Athena! Happy to be here.

My pleasure – thanks for your strong work!
Appreciate it, Doc!
Trying to decide if I’ll be staying for a few days or more or if I’ll be there for 2 days max. The latter will require less planning and I can make it out tomorrow for sure. The former, well, it’s a huge city so I imagine I probably don’t need to prepare much, just camera, phone, some emergency supplies and emergency food, some cleaning wipes or a rag, maybe electric razor.
Reminder, my #OWS twitter account is @SocEconEquality. If I don’t go tomorrow, I’ll try to post more statistics, facts, studies and less retweeting. Got wrapped up in it today from the activity in the afternoon.
Stay, stay, stay! And start a diary! Don’t let the Great Orange (and now blue?) Satan out-radical us!!!

October2011 post
Yeah, I just added him to my experimental OWS list.
I don’t trust the people who run the site and post on the front page. They’re interested in Politics and covering every story from the angle of how it helps Democrats and/or hurts Republicans. The protest has been going on for 7, they’ve had 2-3 diaries in the recommended list (user made and user voted on) each day about the protests and haven’t posted anything about them on the front page still! The problem they have is, how can they spin the protest coverage to help Democrats and hurt Republicans? They can still surprise me though. If anyone is out there “from” the site, I imagine it’s a diary poster as a few said they’re out there. I would love to meet them as they are what’s good about the site. The diaries there are a different world from the main page (though a lot of weird stuff and internal conflicts going on as well).
Also, before everyone goes to bed, can I say I’m really happy with and grateful for this little community we’ve built here following this?
Yáll rock.
(btw, my “new to me” 2001 PC seems to think I’m French and does weird stuff with apostrophes, but I let it stick for the word “yáll”, being in and from TN. It amuses me. lol.)
There is a guy there with a tri-corner hat. Far out.
Are you talking about KOS or FDL?
Kos. FDL has been pretty good in comparison. They keep promoting these live blogs to the main page. It’d be hard for the few main page staff to do better than Kevin has done.
Happy for the chance to help. I very much appreciate the work you and Kevin and everyone keeping us informed tonight – kudos to y’all and to the “Occupy” protesters on the street in New York and across the country
Thanks! Going to develop a Twitter addiction if I keep following this as intensely as I have been for much longer though.
Yes, indeed this team rocks. And so does your 2001 computer that wants so much to go to Nawlins.

Conflicting reports about possible mass arrests at the park tonight. At least 2 trustworthy sources have said they have heard it from inside sources, but others think that was the original plan but was canceled just over 2 hours ago.
I think that it’s going to be a long slog between now and Monday morning. The number of LS viewers is dropping. Now at 5800. Are there folks with capabilities of capturing sections of the LS as YouTubes?
Are you there in the park now?
If you go over to youtube, search “wall street” and filter by upload date, you see lots and lots of people youtubing the livestream. I *think* they’re already organized like that?
pic
What do you mean? Little activity tomorrow?
I was thinking myself, though the weekend is a fun time to be there, many people off work and school, it’s not the most useful day to protest the elite who work Mon-Friday in that area and are elsewhere on the weekend (same for the media). Hence, I’m leaning more towards arriving during the week and sticking through until next weekend if possible. Feel a bit unprepared and it’d give me time to build a presence online so I’m not feeling like a complete outsider when I arrive. Hope it can last and sustain at least this size, if not more, until at least october 6th. The news stories with major protests in NYC and DC simultaneously would be quite interesting and overwhelming.
I saw one or two. I’m glad they’re organized.
Occupy globally
I’m thinking that there might be a raid either tonight or tomorrow night to clear the park by Monday morning. Likely between 1am and 5am. Fortunately there are still 5000+ viewers on the LS.
I don’t think you have to worry about being unprepared to be an online presence.
Yes, persistence is first necessity. Numbers help expand the time and space.
CNN
Woot! Occupy Everywhere!
I’m sure that at some point they will be forcibly removed. But I’m proud of them, they showed a lot of gumption and stood their ground tonight. The PTB will have to drum up some kind of “security” excuse to get them out. And it won’t be pretty.
It’s amazing!

“A video posted on YouTube and NYDailyNews.com shows uniformed officers had corralled the women using orange nets when two supervisors made a beeline for the women, and at least one suddenly sprayed the women before turning and quickly walking away.
Footage of other police altercations also circulated online, but it was unclear what caused the dramatic mood shift in an otherwise peaceful demonstration.
“I saw a girl get slammed on the ground. I turned around and started screaming,” said Chelsea Elliott, 25, from Greenpoint, Brooklyn, who said she was sprayed. “I turned around and a cop was coming … we were on the sidewalk and we weren’t doing anything illegal.”
That’s my favorite reporter, says there’s still a large police presence.
Not sure if they will move tonight, hoping they will just draw the OT and relax.
Anyway, it’s quiet and I’m about to turn into a pumpkin, so I’ll say goodnight.
In Solidarity.
Couldn’t resist this last one.

Aha, so it was a white shirt. Wonder if it’s the same guy who’s been popping off all week.
Where’s the LS?
Down, I guess?
Woot!
Excellent job here keeping us informed. We may be witnesing the beginning of something big. I hope they make it through the night or the bacon may be bluffing.
It looks likes the LS has gone to sleep for the night.
The Twitter list has been real funky tonight. Sometimes it loads and then it presents a “page not found” and a search box. It seems to be a Twitter bug.

Peaceful protests only go so far. @ some point in time one would think that when arrested, you sit and force them to carry, and fellow protesters, get a lot more agressive and not allow 2 cops to arrest someone.
Now I am not calling for violence, but intimidation, for it works both ways.

Thanks going out for the medical supply donations. They just gave the address, I just have to go back and get it.
DO WHAT! Tell them FDL is the most progressive news on the web and we have been supporting before they ever got started in Liberty Park!
The more people know the better. This is a movement to get change not Macys and Gimbels (you have to be of a certain age to remember that one). If RedState of LGF did a diary exactly like this one we would (1) be shocked and (2) be glad that the word was getting out, OccupyWallStreet is trans-partisan and trans-ideological. It is about the 99% and the 1%. Hopefully it can be trans-blog as well.

I never said it was a big deal. I actually find it amusing. This isn’t the first time that DKos has copied FDL instead of doing their own research and reporting. I’m sure it won’t be the last.
I’m not insisting they take it down or anything. I just pointed it out to the guy there. I agreed with his statement that we should all unite.

The White Shirts were cruel.
The behavior of the white shirts is way beyond the pale and very disturbing.

Which raises another strategic point. This is about the time that fatigue and general discomfort start making differences seem bigger than they are. This is where the facilitators begin to have problems with factions forming. In an interview with one of the folks in the park at around 2am last night, they recounted a request in the general assembly for a general assembly made up of those who were not heterosexual male or something like that. And the lady being interviewed said that that request could lead to factions. Indeed it could. But is was likely a symptom of the fact that fatigue is beginning to be an issue for some. This is where I guess you have to cue Bernice Johnson Reagon’s quote about coalitions taking you out of your comfort zone.
She said the officers that processed them were in sincere solidarity with them, but had to do their job.
Several arrested were just in the area doing their thing and not a part of the protests.
Morning all!
Sincerest form of flattery…
#occupywallstreet day 8 (first draft) – jameswagner.com(NY arts blog mostly)
I think I know what’s irritating them. They don’t get paid overtime because they’re “exempt employees”. That’s the default situation. It depends on how the coverage and bargaining of the union is defined. But I suspect that white shirt-blue shirt = management-labor.
She says they talked in the cell with each other. The regular folks/not protesters that were arrested were done so when they started taking pictures of the protest! Anyone that pulled up a phone or camera to take pics was tackled and arrested!
I wish I could afford to send them a box of copies of “13 Bankers” and “The Big Short.” Maybe some “Winner-Take-All Politics” and “The Mendacity of Hope” to show them how both parties in Washington (including President Obama) have betrayed the middle and working class people of this nation.
There’s no excuse for violence and they have become criminals themselves. We do need to reform all institutions that encourage and perpetuate violence.
Charges were:
Disorderly conduct. Used when cops don’t have a legit charge. All will appear in court on the same date. November 3rd.

I wish I could do anything for them! Helping out here with live blog is all I can do.
Well part of that reformation has to do with labor standards that class workers as “management” or “professional” just to deprive them of their OT.
Today is the 222nd birthday of the Bill of Rights…
If many people are present and one big general assembly doesn’t work to address everyone’s concerns, it seems fine have several general assemblies and then they unite under the one general assembly to plan out bigger issues, like schedule of events, march time and route, etc. Otoh, it’s important not to let people’s gender, ethnicity, sexual preference, age, dietary habits, etc. be used to separate people where it’ll do more harm than good.
Light note: At 3:00am, the #occupywallstreet thread comes close to being the all @robinsage bot channel.
LOL. I just saw a tweet fly by from @robinsage about the next episode of Jersey Shore. I think everyone’s realized that @robinsage is a mindless bot operated by corporate shills.
Speaker talking to Moderators about comments regarding degrading comments on live chat. Women degrogatory comments and gender related unacceptable words.
Yep. That goes to the comfort zone issue. Good facilitation makes it easier for folks who’ve been told to “sit down and shut up” to get a hearing. But that sort of space is so unfamiliar as to be scary for some people. Whether they are folks normally dismissed as the identity politics crowd or just folks who are shy or soft-spoken.

New York is a functioning city.
Must be getting a good night’s sleep.
News crew just took video but did not interview anyone. Suspect they will spin it as they feel.
One march today, but not sure. Kinda want to relax today.
The main pagers are different than diarists, who are just a wide range of people like those here, even more so considering they also have a strong pro-Obama group, fiscal conservative social liberals, war supporters, etc. There’s at least 2 diarists on the ground in NYC if I’m reading the diaries correctly. Last time I checked, not a single article published on the page has mentioned the protests in 7 days. The main pagers are very careful about what they post and the reason they’ve gained that status is Markos trusts they aren’t going to go beyond the boundaries and report on things that may reflect poorly on Democrats and Obama, while at the same time strengthening a way to deal with our problems outside of elections (unless it’s guaranteed to help Democrats, such as anti-war protests during the Bush administration). They can criticize Obama, but in a way that is advice: “See, you shouldn’t do this because it hurts your popularity.”
Appears that ABC7 news folks stayed all night.
Could be one reason police left them alone.
Were they an overnight encampment or a meet-tomorrow general assembly. There were a bunch of general assembly scheduled event that were tweeted last night that sounded like folks were going home and meeting back the next day. Some of these places are not yet logisitically prepared to have an encampment.
Yep. Democracy Now was also doing something from the camp last night. I wonder how long they kept that going.
General Hygene meeting going on, re: staying clean and healthy in the marble house. LOL!
What I don’t understand is why Twitter hasn’t banned the robinsage account. I’m sure I’m not the only one to report it.
More power to them. I am not a participant there. In the very early days I thought they were great but it transformed to something I am not willing to take part in.
I need a break guys. Live Blog if you feel up to it. See you later.
Last tweet about that:
Is the Kos liveblog front page or a reader diary? If it’s the latter, they very well might not know about FDL. This liveblog’s format is pretty standard now (started with AJE during the Egyptian revolution, iirc.) Everyone is going to do the same thing now, because it’s just the best way.
Also, good morning everyone.

And on the LS, something about weaning off of WePay and getting donations some other way, but didn’t catch it all.
btw, The interviews that the LS folks have been doing have been very good. Would be good to have links to the archives of those. I think the LS crew have been clipping them into segments but the Livestream way of managing access to them leaves something to be desired in that they are not marked for time-of-day.
The reason that I focus on the interviews is that there are first person accounts of what their detention was like, conversations about what’s going on in the general assembly, and other topics that give more of a sense of the diversity of what is happening there.
LS: 3-400 there, got the equipment back after the arrests yesterday.
Edit: thought it was funny that one guy was “interpreting” what a NYer with a really heavy accent was saying, e.g., wata = water
It’s not a site, it’s a name, a user ID. It is run by a NJ security firm wannabe. I guess the reason might be either that the firm paid for the privilege as a commercial account or that it was a case of “national security uber alles”.

Chris Hedges giving an interview. Very articulate and incisive.

They were giving Chris Hedges all kinds of hell on twitter for a statement to the effect that he had better things to do.
I’ve seen in the youtube comments and in a few tweets that people are saying this female protestor hit the cop that maced the group, right before the macing happened.
Here’s my screen grab with the relevant image circled. Cop’s arm extended w/mace in hand as she raises her sign to protect her face, not strike the cop.
Image on twitter.
Edit: Correction sent out, “arts and culture at 12:30, not 3pm”
Good job, Twitter folks. It can’t just be thoughts and words, it has to be translated into constructive action. Chris is going beyond giving some excellent pointers but covering all the bases. Excellent.
I think people come up with weird ideas like that because they want to live in a fairytale world where nothing bad could/will ever happen to them.
I agree. They want to pretend that the police are still here to protect them. I was one of those people until last year or so. I wanted to be a cop.
I just felt it necessary to screen grab that and post it because a couple of the highest rated comments on youtube are about this woman hitting the cop and deserving what she got. It’s total bullshit and people should see that.
Twitpic
MoveOn is hosting the livestream too, now?
http://front.moveon.org/live-stream-watch-whats-unfolding-on-wall-street-right-now/#.Tn84Ir7xlnG.twitter
I really expected this protest to be marginalized by the Good Pragmatic Liberals. Maybe they’re ok with it since NY just elected a Republican.
Picture was from Wisconsin.
Better things to do than what?
Good job. The video shows the white shirt spinning and moving in that direction very rapidly but the time slicing of low-res video makes it hard to tell.
Yeah, he does sound really good this AM.
Yup. First tactic was to scare people out and away by having an overwhelming presence of NYPD surrounding them. They got away with it until the media finally decided to pay a bit of attention. Though they favor the police point of view, the NYPD have to worry about people trusting their eyes more than what reporters claim.
Cover the occupation.
e.g.,
OH, you mean Chris Hayes (Maddow protege on MSNBC, a Very Serious Young Liberal in the vein of Ezra Klein who “stumbled” upon arrests yesterday, not actually being a part of the protests or even reporting on them) not Hedges. I made that point in Twitter since their names sound very similar.
Sure. The corporate media and their middle men (e.g. MoveOn.Org) sidle up and try to co-opt if they can’t ignore.
Corporations do consider destruction of brand image as violence. And will sue your ass off for defamation unless you are like most of us–part of the 99% and ignored.
Not just NYC, everywhere!
Oh, you’re right, my mistake!
Edit: more coffee
Hedges is on a roll. Jeebus, Hedges is in S. WV? Wow.
Twas what “hippie chic” was about in the 1960′s–co-opting and trivializing. But like I said above, if MoveOn wants to stream the livestream, I’m all for that. You don’t win without large numbers. And the more people who know the better.
I fine with it too but it’s also important to consider the source.
zzz
This is a really good piece of the interview with Hedges where he describing who was brought into “police” the G20 in Toronto. Extremely important stuff to shed light on. NYers should be asking themselves how much of that has been imported into the City as it’s obviously on display.

Always. And the context in which it is placed.
What was he saying about that (who was brought in for G20)?
Ask Hedges about the open pit uranium mining that Canadian speculators want to do just east of him in S. VA and only less than 100 miles from Raleigh/Durham!
Look at what NY1 did:
NYPD Silent On Pepper Spray
They got the hand and the white sleeve in action.

Hedges didn’t elaborate in detail. I suspect multinational military from the Iraq and/or Afghanistan wars introduced to Toronto via private “security companies.”
Medea Benjamin from CodePink (also of Global Exchange) up now for an interview.

Of note: “A Statement of Solidarity between Egyptian Revolutionaries and the October2011.org Movement”
Medea making great points about who needs to be involved, who needs to “Be The Change.”
Benjamin is making really salient points about the barriers to constructive change by the 1%ers’ proxies, their corporate/banksta infrastructure. Names work by Dana Priest and specifically Priest’s work regarding the paramilitary death squad that the CIA has been turned into.
Benjamin notes some key structural problems/barriers installed within The Machine.

To all commenters here and activists on the street: YOU ARE THE GREATEST!!!
More from the live stream and the interview in progress with Code Pink’s Medea Benjamin …
Benjamin is specifically and concretely outlining the barriers for the working poor. Says what helps build the movement is what creates safety for more disenfranchised people to come and participate. Efforts need to be family-friendly and immigrant-friendly. Encourages folks to find creative ways to end the hostage taking by the 1%er, money-driven political system. Criticizes the US’ shameful, war-driven system and any apathy by Americans towards the victims of the US’ war and especially the non-white refugees.
Great interviews! More!!
PEOPLE, PEOPLE, PEOPLE, IF YOU ARE ARRESTED STATE THAT YOU HAVE CHEST PAIN AND CAN’T BREATHE AND THAT YOU NEED A AMBULANCE!!!!!
Once you are arrested state you are having chest pain and difficulty breathing (heart attack) then demand a ambulance and transport to the ER for evaluation.
BY LAW YOU CAN NOT BE DENIED EMERGENCY MEDICAL CARE!!!!
This will also require one of 2 things: either a cop to be taken away from the protest to guard you at the ER(that’s not gonna happen), or the cops will call a judge and issue you a personal recognizance bond since when you are under arrest THEY are responsible for paying for your medical care while in custody and they don’t want that bill.
When the cops leave the ER (that’s even if they show up) leave the ER, thank the staff and sign yourself out of the ER without going to jail or having to post bail. (cool uh?)
Or if there is no cop in the ambulance, wait till you round the corner, demand that they stop and let you out {they have to by law or it’s kidnapping} just do them the favor of signing their medical waiver if you take that approach.
(even cooler uh?)
Chest pain and shortness of breath are the magic words. Hell, if that doesn’t work fake a seizure, just be sure to pee in your pants, spit foam and such all while shaking for a minute or so then play unconscious then act confused a few minutes later while “regaining” consciousness so you appear more authentic. This does work b/c most cops can’t tell a fake seizure from a real one.
Remember, by law you can not be denied emergency medical care!!!!!!!
