(photo: Jessica Lehrman )The late people’s historian Howard Zinn declared, “Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world.” Today will be the largest and most significant march yet. The number of people, who have participated in marches prior to this one, will pale in comparison to the tens of thousands of people, who are likely to come out to protest and show solidarity with Occupy Wall Street this afternoon. That is why Zinn’s quote has renewed importance.
This movement didn’t begin because someone started to kick around a petition. The movement didn’t ignite because people found a person whom they would like to get elected to a position in government. The movement didn’t start because some people called a rally on the steps of Capitol Hill that would last for a few hours and “send a message” to Congress. The movement grew because a few disgruntled Americans had the guts to unite and call for a protest action with a vision of truly beginning to do the work citizens must do to no longer live in a society subservient to corporate and special interests.
Less than one hundred went into a park on September 17 and did not leave. The police appeared intent on forcing them out of the park but the occupiers found out late in the night they would be allowed to stay. An opening was created. One occupier tweeted it felt like “a mini Tahrir Square.” And, in the first week, with very little media attention, those who were tired of letting Wall Street and the top 1% ruin their lives and other people’s lives—somewhere between 50 and 200—occupied the park.
Those who slept in the park the first week, especially on the first night, are the vanguard of this movement. They were not part of some known community group or union. They were not affiliated with any campaign launched by any liberal organization. They were not even directly connected to any of the more radical groups in the country, like the Socialist Workers’ Party or Communist Party USA. They were not being visited by celebrities or media personalities. They were just students saddled with tens of thousands of dollars in student loans. They were people who were fed up with growing poverty. They were citizens who were no longer willing to tolerate Wall Street influence over politicians, who tailor legislation and policies to benefit corporations and the richest 1% at the expense of the other 99% of Americans.
They are responsible for inspiring the “occupy” actions springing up all over the country and giving hope to so many Americans, who had become cynical and demoralized because President Barack Obama caters to powerful interests on Wall Street just as much as President George W. Bush did.
The march begins at 3 pm ET. The blog will be covering it as it unfolds. In addition to that, the blog will also be covering student walkouts, which are to begin at noon ET today.

But the whole point of the book could be captured in the single quote that I stole from Thoreau right at a start: “there are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil, to one who is striking at the root.”
These protesters should see that they are that one striking at the root. They should understand that our system has been corrupted by money — even if the Supreme Court refuses to call it “corruption,” and even if political scientists are unsure about whether their regressions can show it. And they should recognize that until this root is hacked, the weeds of this corruption will continue to destroy this democracy, and this nation.

“I’m really encouraged by what I’m seeing. People around the country are finally organizing to stand up to the huge influence of corporations on government and our lives. This kind of citizen reaction to corporate power and corporate greed is long overdue”…
…Feingold rejected the argument — made even by some of Occupy Wall Street’s sympathizers — that it has failed to articulate a clear message or agenda, arguing that the coalescing of outrage itself is the story and the message here, even if it seems incohate at times.
“The guys who are protesting are not filing legal briefs,” he said. “They are expressing the populist, genuine view that people have been ripped off. It’s a fundamental identification of the fact that people are getting taken for a ride by powerful interests who are getting away with murder.”… [emphasis added]

When Jane and I showed up at 4 pm yesterday, there were maybe 20 people down there. They do their evening march at 5 pm. Their General Assembly is 6 pm every night. One of the occupiers I talked to said that they were seeing more people participate in the occupation in the evenings. They are right on K Street in McPherson Square. And, they know of the planned action in Freedom Plaza that begins tomorrow and will be participating in that in addition to maintaining a home base in the square.

There most certainly IS an FBI feild office in NYC. It is the biggest feild office in the country. It is also the only fe=ield office that has a deputy director in charge instead of just a supervising agent in charge.
The NY Feild office has it’s HQ at 26 Federal Plaza which is on the west boundry of Foley Square directly across from the federal and state courthouses.

According to an interview Ray Kelly gave last week, NYPD has 35,000 sworn and 15,000 civilian employees

I am watching the real estate bubble in China and India (see here and here; the African and Bolivian land grabs are in part about arable land worked by slaves for 1%ers speculating in India and China). Speculators in both China and India appear concerned about the bubble bursting.

Kelly went rogue a long time ago. Bloomie originally favored trying KSM in NYC , then Kelly went to a Community Board One meeting and scared the hell out of them. CB1 complained to Mayor, mayor like a total fool backed down instead of firing Kelly.
Every since Kelly has enjoyed publicly yanking Mayor Mike’s chain.
Notice before OWS even began, Mayor Mike talked about how if things did not improve, people would be forced to take to the streets. He said it in a tone that suggested he thought they would be justified in doing so.
Yet, now he is stuck defending the actions of Kelly’s whiteshirted goon squads.

World Teacher Day – good timing for a walkout
I hope colleges late to Occupy plan walkouts at noon Thursday. They could coordinate with October 6, 2011 peace protest/rally in DC and start at noon.
They are unfrikkinbelievable. If congress is stupid enough to do that, throw it in the face of the protesters, there will be hell to pay. I just can’t see how that would not unleash a flood of anger. Who knows, maybe that’s part of the plan. Win-win for Wall Street.

As some have said, a large part of the problem with the system we have now is that the 1% is being protected by a layer of legislated priviledge. The representatives who have established and kept the barrier in place are part of the problem, not the solution. This is particularly true of progressives in government. IMO.

Sorry to hear about your lack-of-work situation.
Demonstrations are so not me. I hate crowds. One of the biggest pre-Iraq invasion ones was 1/2 block from my apt. I finally went outside to get some lunch & found my twin nieces in the front of the corral on my street, so I bought them some lunch, talked with them until cop told me I would have to be corralled or leave. As I always get positively profiled, I just told him I was talking to my relatives & would leave soon. Got another 15 min out of him, went wandering around for another hour or two (there were hundreds of thousands), then went home.
Even though demos are not me, I understand how important they are. Even when they are publicly ignored by PTB & media, they have an influence. So I’m hoping this one gains lots of momentum.

I’m watching a wall of various live streams at http://worldwide-livestreams.blogspot.com so take that into consideration. It doesn’t have to be an “either or.” You can pick the original Lives Streamd for the blog as not everyone’s machine can stream more than one video at a time and load the window in a separate tab but pick and choose the data stream that you want active to conserve machine resources and not crash everything you’re doing.

That’s a tough one. I’d go with the original crew, if you have confidence they can keep it going. There’s a lot of people trying to keep up with events today so they can feel like they are being a part of this. IMO, it needs to be competent enough to approach professional grade, but having it be taken over by professionals might clash with the underlying essence and message.

As someone stated on “countdown” last night “OWS” in no different to the beginnings of this country’s starting.
The colonist were fighting the inappropriateness of the English Monarchy and the inequality. They had no specifics until they met in Philidelphia to draft the Declaration of Independance. That spurred a war which culminated years later into the Articles of Confederation. After Shey’s rebellion it took years until a Constitution was drafted and ratified by the colonies/states.
So “OWS” doesn’t need a single platform of demands, all it needs is a cause.
Just got back from the march/rally. There were still thousands in the park when I left. I’d guess the march was well over 10,000. Another great day.
