Occupy Wall Street is about to have its biggest march yet. Also, student walkouts took place in around seventy-five colleges and universities. Some school walkouts were more substantial than others, as is to be expected.
FDL’s premier live blog on Occupy Wall Street continues. Here’s a Twitter list to follow for updates. The march begins at 4:30 pm ET. Here is a Twitter list to follow for the latest updates.
LIVE STREAM OF OCCUPY WALL STREET FROM GLOBAL REVOLUTION
LIVE STREAM OF OCCUPY WALL STREET FROM THE UPTAKE
10:03 PM Police are in the streets (still). Barricades now up on all sides of Liberty Park. Protesters are out in small groups marching around. Pretty much all the union people have gone home and are probably asleep so they can be rested for their job tomorrow. I will be reporting live from Freedom Plaza in Washington, DC, by noon. Major occupation action is to take place.
As I close down the blog for tonight, I leave you with the words of Democracy Now! reporter Ryan Devereaux, who tweeted from the scene of today’s massive march (I’ve edited them together into one paragraph):
Had you told me when I started covering Occupy Wall Street I’d find myself walking B-way with tens of thousands I never would have believed you…No matter where this goes, the sound of thousands and thousands cheering in Liberty Plaza is something I’ll never forget…This moment belongs to the die-hards who, despite the naysayers, have spent weeks sleeping outside, building something very special…Thinking about the kid who quit his job to join this movement, was beaten & arrested the next day, then back at the plaza when he got out. Thinking about the girl who took a redeye from California the day this started because she thought this had a chance of being the real deal.
This is Round 4 of the NYPD using police brutality on protesters. It is the third time the corporate or establishment media will be reporting police brutality against Occupy Wall Street protesters (though they won’t likely call it that).
Occupy Wall Street organizers have a lot to be proud about today. My suggestion, if I was at the evening’s General Assembly, would be to get all the people who aren’t in the park into the park to settle down and discuss what all the union support means for the future of Occupy Wall Street. How is it going to be used? Head out into the streets and take on NYPD another day. Get back to Liberty Park and keep growing the movement.
They all are on to something. They really are. Getting money out of politics and holding Wall Street criminals accountable—pipe dreams like that have an increased possibility of happening each day that Occupy Wall Street grows stronger.
10:04 PM “My little night stick’s going to get a workout tonight.” Sounds dirty.
10:03 PM Media team members arrested (again)
10:02 PM White-shirted officer swinging a baton around at protesters like it’s a tomahawk
9:45 PM

Like for example:

9:38 PM Interesting quotes from NYPD community affairs officer, at ABC News‘ new live blog (that will be up today & gone tomorrow probably):
A community affairs officer who has been minding the north side of the park since Sept. 17 said his orders have not changed at any point during the “occupation.” Keeping people out of car and pedestrian traffic is his only charge, he said.
Asking to remain anonymous, he also spoke about divisions in his own ranks. He likes grassroots radio and WLIB, while some of his colleagues are “more right-wing — just like any other workplace.”
Would he be out with the protesters if he wasn’t on duty?
“Yeah, I would, but I’m at work.”
9:28 PM The Dissenter’s coverage of OWS praised in this Nieman Watchdog post.
…Numerous bloggers, includingGlenn Greenwald, Kevin Gosztola, and Lisa Romero presented observations that should be read by any serious journalist as to what constitutes real news, and for explanations of why progressive actions get ignored or pooh-poohed by major news outlets. As the Wall Street action concluded its second week, mainstream media coverage has picked up considerably…
9:13 PM This from @JAMyerson earlier: “Cops beating hell out of guy on Beaver between Marketfield and Bway. Protestors pushing over cop bikes.” Number of people on list I follow for updates have no battery left on their phone.
9:12 PM NYPD moving toward the bull (Earlier, many were shouting, “Castrate the bull! Castrate the bull!” The bull is the chief symbol of Wall Street [greed & corruption].)

8:55 PM Glenn Greenwald nails CNN’s Erin Burnett for her talk on Occupy Wall Street
8:50 PM On NYPD radio, officer says trying to push people into the park. A report that some people have left the confrontation at the Wall Street barricades and are headed back to the park.
8:43 PM Video of cops beating and arresting protesters
8:35 PM Tons of cops still out, people are remaining on the sidewalks and the infamous orange moving cages are being moved in to kettle the crowd. Possible mass arrest could take place.
8:34 PM Report that up to 100 people have been arrested (seeking more confirmation)
8:29 PM NLG legal observer says at least 10 people arrested. Report of a body being slammed to the ground by police. Probably multiple bodies have been thrown around cause that’s how NYPD operates.
7:55 PM Reports of arrests/beating coming from two credible sources so I will be posting recent tweets from @RDevro & @PennyRed

7:27 PM Police vehicles headed to Wall Street.

6:29 PM An amazing moment unfolding right now. All these people should realize what kind of power they hold.

5:56 PM At Occupy Seattle, park rangers take down tents. Officers are physically removing protesters. (Photos from @ChrisDaniels5)

5:46 PM The major question: Has Occupy Wall Street finally reached its goal of getting 20,000 people to flood Wall Street?
5:42 PM Video of the crowd marching: it’s huge
And photo from @Newyorkist also shows large size of the crowd:

5:28 PM Vote on demands Occupy Wall Street should support.
5:24 PM Obama Administration Chief of Staff Bill Daley answers Dave Weigel of Slate’s question on Occupy Wall Street:
…I asked Daley about Occupy Wall Street. Why not? I asked if it was helpful to the White House, in its current jobs bill campaign, to have economic angst protests in dozens of cities.
“I don’t know if it’s helpful,” he said. “I wouldn’t characterize it that way. Look it: People express their opinions. In the new social network world, they can do it pretty effectively outside the normal way, historically, people have done it. So whether it’s helpful to us, or helpful for people to understand in the political system that there are a lot of people out there concerned about the economy — I know the focus is on Wall Street, but it’s a broader discussion that we’re having.” He pointed to Sam Stein, who’d been asking about supercommittee negotiations. “Part of the thing here, about a balanced approach — I think people want to see fairness in the system.”
I’d decode this response, but I’d be wasting my time. This isn’t much different from what Mayor Bloomberg said last week.
5:21 PM Thousands of people are penned in behind barricades. They are waiting to step off for a march on Wall Street.
5:16 PM TWU President John Samuelson at rally in Foley Square thanks Occupy Wall Street for sparking the labor movement and showing labor “the way to do it.” He says the way to do it is not to have conversations in the corridors of Albany or in the corridors of DC. It’s to take the streets.
4:56 PM Posted a bit ago but great photo from @Newyorkist

4:55 PM From @TheOther99

4:53 PM Black Agenda Report‘s Glen Ford on Occupy Wall Street:
They are very young, very white, and largely inexperienced in organizing. But the Occupy Wall Street crew has picked the right target: finance capitalists, the class that is the common enemy of the human race. In that sense, “the Zuccotti Park campers are eons ahead of the faux radicals and ‘progressives’ who, in terror of the Tea Party and Republican presidential clown candidates, will soon return to the Obamite fold in their eternal search for lesser evils.” Obama was, and will remain, the candidate of Wall Street.
4:48 PM Panorama of Foley Square from agreatbigcity (h/t athena1)
4:38 PM Eve Ensler in interview with Laura Flanders talks about what makes people’s mic great but also how it is interesting that we are bombarded by corporate imagery but we can’t amplify our voices. She celebrates that the organization is horizontal and not from the top down. She appreciates how women are at the center and how this is a coming together of many groups.
Naomi Klein says twelve years after Seattle Occupy Wall Street have chosen target very well. She says anti-globalization she was part of chose summits as targets, which are transient. Also, when the “Battle of Seattle” happened, the economy was in a boom and it was very hard to talk about the problems of capitalism. Now, the economic situation is not in dispute.
Both Ensler and Klein talk about how this is revealing the true character of liberals and the wider left. Much of the left has been “NGOized” and Occupy Wall Street has been roundly criticized because it is not and does not act like an NGO. These NGOs aren’t rooted in communities. And in some ways the protest has been a litmus test for liberals to see if they really have the guts to support people.
4:28 PM Feeder march of thousands arrive at Foley Square where march is being held. Thousands were in the square already.
4:21 PM

4:12 PM The Guardian reports on how the Direct Action Committee has been responsible for a lot of the success of Occupy Wall Street.
The direct action committee lies at the heart of this success. Numbering anywhere between 35 and 50 activists, the committee is “empowered by the general assembly” to plan action. The committee includes campaigners, community activists and those with relevant organisational skills, some of whom live in collectives and already base their lives around a communal system.
4:07 PM In case you missed it: from earlier, vets at Liberty Park

4:03 PM Unions don’t want to be seen as ignoring Occupy Wall Street. So, just before march is set to step off, Teamsters’ statement of support is released.
3:55 PM Nurses gathering in New York

3:45 PM The librarians of Occupy Wall Street on operating a library in the park. They mention what people can do to help. They don’t have enough copies of A People’s History of the United States by Howard Zinn.
3:35 PM Student walkout supported by faculty at The New School in New York. The group is headed to participate in the community group/labor march to Wall Street.
Previous updates (for more, go here)
-Former Senator Russ Feingold shares his view on Occupy Wall Street with Greg Sargent:
“I’m really encouraged by what I’m seeing. People around the country are finally organizing to stand up to the huge influence of corporations on government and our lives. This kind of citizen reaction to corporate power and corporate greed is long overdue”…
…Feingold rejected the argument — made even by some of Occupy Wall Street’s sympathizers — that it has failed to articulate a clear message or agenda, arguing that the coalescing of outrage itself is the story and the message here, even if it seems incohate at times.
“The guys who are protesting are not filing legal briefs,” he said. “They are expressing the populist, genuine view that people have been ripped off. It’s a fundamental identification of the fact that people are getting taken for a ride by powerful interests who are getting away with murder.”… [emphasis added]

-Robert Greenwald’s Brave New Foundation has put together a video to push more Americans to participate in the growing “Occupy” movement.

You funny.
10 YEARS of tax money being funneled to nation build and extract resources while our own country crumbles.
You know, I’ve never felt any evidence of that mythical trickle-down stuff, but it seems this small application of relief for those at the bottom sure sends out a nice warm wave of something that’s impossible to deny.

No! Really?!? 20K qualifies as huge, IMO, considering this is a continuing action.
Is the NYPD preventing them from marching? That’s what it appears to be on LS.
Bill didn’t fall far from the tree did he?
I don’t think so. In this environment there would surely be a class action lawsuit of trademark infringement by real chimps. Not to mention a species discrimination class action lawsuit.

Shut the country down has been my wet dream for, well I can’t remember how long.
In 1980 (or thereabouts), Carter said “Put away your credit cards.” We all came in to work the next day and did a big hardy-hardy-ha-ha. But peeps did and the economy plunged back into a double-dip, which panicked Carter into reversing himself. Taught me a couple of BIG lessons: (1) the power of the bully pulpit; (2) The power of collective peeps (in that case peeps-qua-consumers) actions.
Better late than never!

There will be no doubt of the righteousness of this fight after Greece defaults and causes a Lehman Level Event. There will be no doubt at all. There will however be hundreds of thousands if not millions in the streets along side us. Now, I’m off to Liberty Square once more. And if there are any doctors on this blog, we could really use some volunteers for the 8pm – 12 am and 12 am – 4 am shifts so anyone sick can get some medicine.

Keep up the good work.
As much as we like the sight of all this, let’s not start crying tears of joy until we see some actual results. You know, legislation, investigations, indictments, resignations, etc. The history of movements like this is that a) it takes a long time to really affect change, and b) those in power will do the absolute minimum in the way of window dressing to appear to be fixing the problem. Anybody who thinks that the PTB and their cronies in government are going to give up any significant power or accede to any significant reforms just because some people marched and chanted for a while is, I’m sorry to say, delusional.
Let’s also keep in mind that while these protests are growing, they are far, far, far from the size of previous civil rights and anti-war protests.

Guys, you have a broken link or something on the donation part of your website as well as on the email you sent. I would like to contribute but can’t.
TD, you have been at this all afternoon. Are you exhausted? Thank you for this incredible coverage.

Thanks, PP!
Yes, while you guys were partying in other diaries
Actually, it’s witnessing history.
The order to crackdown on OWS protesters is coming from NYC Mayor Bloomberg’s office.
Bloomberg, the billionaire, has staked out which side he favors in the class war (the 1 percenters), and it is not on the side of the protesters (the 99 percenters). Like the Republicans, Bloomberg has chosen Herbert Hoover’s path, a conservative path, an austerity path. a path (as we know from history) that can only lead to further job losses, to further contraction in our economy, to another Great Depression.
Mayor Bloomberg, on the other hand, could be standing with the OWS protesters. standing by the spirit of FDR, showing that he understands why Herbert Hoover’s conservative policies tanked the U.S. economy between 1929 and 1933, and that he favors FDR’s path instead. Between 1929 and 1933, Hoover stood with the 1 percenters of that period and against the 99 percenters. When FDR became president in 1933, he stood with the 99 percenters and against the 1 percenters, raising America out of the Great Depression, creating jobs, putting food on people’s plates, regulating Wall Street in hopes that another 1929 Stock Market Crash could be averted while prying the hands off bank deposits of the investment gamblers behind the crash (you know, the 1 percenters back then).
Mayor Bloomberg could have been standing with the OWS protesters from the first day, mingling with them, shaking hands, ordering pizza, standing up to the Wall Street gamblers who almost crashed the economy in 2008, standing with American taxpayers who bailed-out the Wall Street gamblers. He could be standing with the OWS 99 percenters right now. He didn’t and isn’t, and why would he? Mayor Bloomberg IS Wall Street. He’s a 1 percenter, like Hoover, unlike FDR.
We weren’t! We just got lost in the crowd!
Truly, it is history, and thank you.
I don’t know where the rest of the gang is. In the mix, somewhere!
That is not an official site, and it looks like its purpose is to collect IP addresses. But make your own judgments.

Mein Gott. Just had a great conversation on twitter with a reporter who posed a general question looking for her followers opinions on the “Demands” of #OWS.
I pointed out to her that their website, occupywallstreet.org lists these “demands” as Proposed Demands, so her representing that the movement had issued demands was inaccurate. #OWS is encouraging others to join the movement and raise their voices. They want the entire 99% to rise up and be heard. For them to issue demands before that time would be presumptive and premature.
She seems receptive. I hope she alters her language when doing the story.
Pardon.
The Blog host put it up and I just brought it down here.
Nobody ever stops anything just because I beg them to. Come to think of it, nobody ever keeps doing anything I beg them to keep doing, either. Guess I’m just a lousy beggar. In any event, I’m starting a new movement right now: Fleshies against patchouli. Ordering T-shirts.
I wonder which of the 1%ers are playing in this? “China’s Land Sales Skyrocket 6,700-fold in 21 Years” (NTD TV, Oct. 5, 2011)
LS Chant (no people’s mic) “Let’s occupy Wall Street now!”
Provacateurs or action?
Second that!!!!
Which blog?
You’re right about those points, and some of us are indeed thinking about how to get from here to there.
Awesome!
On LS: Who is chanting “Wall Street now”?
I feel as though we are! People keep coming and going, commenting and disappearing….it’s like we have a sort of home base and then wander out into the crowd. I’ll hold down the fort while you guys go explore.
Irish coffee after.
Tarheel,
Please go to the top of this post from Kevin. Yes, just below the streaming video links he has a list of updates by time.
You may find it there.
Honestly, Dude! (smile)
I’m in a slogan-y mood tonight.
Firedoglake does it hot and wet.
A much better repository for that hope. Much better.
Quality of life, not economic strife! #OccupyWallStreet
LS Facilitator with megaphone is giving people a decision whether they are going to try to move on Wall Street.
It’s a vote with your feet moment, I believe.
LS has Hero Vincent up foran interview and then switched to previously recorded footage
Athena, MzChief, Tarheel, Myself, and few others that I have forgotten have been here off and on since day one. It is hard to listen, watch, catch tweets and comment for all to see at the same time.
Tarheel and MzChief have been running the Graveyard shift all night.
Heh! Fire and Water. Huzzah!
TD, you’re amazing. Thank you.
I contemplated adding the ‘dog’ in there with the fire and the lake, something to do with the style of dog, but I thought that may be taking it a bit far.
Thank you all.
You guys need medals, no lie. This has been groundbreaking coverage and there ought to be some sort of media award.
*she bows in sincere gratitude and admiration*
OT– TarheelDem, what’s the update on this?
“Bank of America refuses to let customers close accounts” (Aug. 14, 2011)
Is BoA racking up fees against their accounts?
“Pigs get slaughtered!” (They are familiar with that one lol.)
The figurative shit, ladies and gents, may be about to hit the figurative fan.
I can’t find the link in Kevin’s post. What timestamp is it?
Be safe, everyone.
Nah. I’m just doing my little part to help Kevin and Jane.
Also, my membership was a gift from another Pup and I will do anything to help and make my benefactor know how much I appreciate their support.
((Peasant Party))
Tarheel,

That is bullshit. They are asking for trouble, BOA that is.
((OmAli!))
Hugs all around!
Incredible pic from today.
That’s strange. No context. And those have been up for two weeks. We’ve discussed this site before. Is Kevin sure this is out of the general assembly?
Completely OT – Steve Jobs is dead.
Wow that pic sends chills up my spine. Incredible
There will never be another one quite like him. RIP
OT–Steve Jobs just died. Quite a man. R.I.P.
Gizmodo from about 10 minutes ago.
I’ve seen the OWS Demands List previously in the chat associated with the Global Revolution live stream days ago (TarheelDem commentary on the Demands List).
I have no idea if Kevin has done the backdoor check or not. From what I understand it was promoted and that is probably where/how it came to it.
Yep. It’s been up since 9/25 on the .org
It’s a list of proposed demands, however. The GA agreed on them as a proposal but not a demand list for the movement. They are yet to be finalized.
What happened, that did not sound good…….
Something seems to be going down on the livestream but I can’t tell what is going on.
LS Horse patrol just went by.
Why is it impossible for people (trolls) to separate being a consumer from not supporting corporate domination of politics? I’m already seeing multiple tweets on the #occupywallstreet stream about protestors needing to thank Steve Jobs for the iStuff.
I saw horses and motorcycles…
YeeeOwww!
Cops pushing, telling them back on the sidewalk. They talked back and said they were on the sidewalk. Now the cops won’t let them cross the street.
Peaceful protests…and yet the cops treat and act like they’re criminals…you’re looking at the wrong people…turn around police…the real criminals are in that building behind that giant bull you’re protecting….apparently the best protection 4.6 million donation can buy…Jamie Dimon.
On LS – they’re bringing the nets in, we’ve gotta move!
Someone just said they are bringin the nets in. The camera is making me drunk.
Chants: “Castrate the Bull”
Twitter was pumping out 20 new tweets every 15 seconds or so. It’s now slowed down to 20 in about a minute and half. I think their servers might be overwhelmed (news of steve jobs’ death maybe?)
I don’t get it. It is after business hours. Why won’t they let them march down Wall Skreech?
RIP Jobs but I wondered about him and his projects with the US military circa the appearance/disappearance of the NeXt and going forward.
It’s like the damn golden calf of Mammon! They ought to throw it over, at least.
Even more police vehicles coming in.
Yes, and when they aren’t at worship at that one, it’s the Owl at Bohemian Grove.
Watching Faux News around 5:30 this evening, one of the heads on FIVE said Mike Moore was the leader of OWS. Woman there–possibly a blond, past Bush press scty–said the ones who were arrested (on The Bridge?) would have problems getting jobs due to arrests???????????? Perhaps Bloomberg needs to dismiss all peaceful protesters for protesting–partially against his private interests on WS. If anyone has a record for peaceful demonstration, those in charge need to be taken to court. Where is Hillary Clinton talking about human rights in NYC America?
11,072 viewers on Global Revolution live stream watching #OccupyWallStreet marchers.
So much for Anderson Cooper being on the ground at #OWS. He’s busily covering Steve Jobs’ death.
And call me insensitive, but how the fuck is someone dying a developing story? Death is pretty final in itself, isn’t it, CNN?
Holy Jumpin’JC, you weren’t kidding! I had never heard of that….*just shaking my head in amazement*
John Samuelson, TWU local prez who was on LS a couple hours ago, is on Countdown with Keith.
This is a stupid move by NYPD.
Bloomberg is out-to-lunch.
Stay peaceful OWS. Peaceful.
Crowd and mounted patrol
Do the tax payers of NY pay to keep that Bull polished and maintained?
The police are making another big mistake! What is the big deal about a march. Now, we have eyes on undercovers in the crowd heading to Wall Street.
OH_MAN! Stoopid.
Reminder. Keith has promised that his special comment tonight will be a reading of statements from #OWS patriots.
If you’ve got CurrentTV you may want to check it out.
Has he covered OWS at all? Don’t think he has. He’s a celebanchor, makes $4 million/year, from a wealthy family. He lives in NYC but can’t be bothered to cover the 99% revolting against the 1%.
What?
You’ve never heard of Bohemian Grove? Grasshopper, you have a lot to learn.
Honest. Never. wish I could do a grin w/o a smiley. lol!
Now that the police have gathered, they should throw their goddamned hats in the air and pick up some picket signs themselves.
Regarding #OccupyGlasgow:
Photo: @sspcampsie SSP Campsie October 1, 2011
NYPD is making a mistake. There was never any threat of violence.
Fuck him. I just think it’s atrocious that he could fly to Egypt to cover Tahrir but couldn’t walk down the block to cover #OWS.
I thanked him on twitter about an hour ago when he promised to cover #OWS on his show. That’s the only reason I turned it on. But he was busy fwapping over Steve Jobs.
NYPD holding Wall Street
LS: “Let us march. Let us march. Let us march.”
“Disobey your orders. Disobey your orders.”

My sentiments exactly!

Isn’t time for those cops to take a break? I mean we wouldn’t want NYPD to go against Federal Labor Laws or anything. Let a Cop Pee!
Disgusting. The NYPD is officially a militarized private security firm.
Protestors getting in the way of the “working girls?”
Are demonstrators offering cops pizza?
At least 6 NYPD on motorbike escorting the march now. Chants of “WE are the 99%!”
Yes, very much as an institution. Now joined at the hip with the CIA if you want to be really disgusted. However, that does not apply to the vast majority of the real people (aka 1%ers) who work for the police dept.
Always worth keeping that distinction in mind.
Yes!
Within the last 10 minutes I saw (2) big d00ds in dark suits with the white shirt and blue shirt NYPD.
Projection on side of building near Liberty Square
Certainly I was referring to the actions of the institution. I agree with you.
I think we’re rapidly approaching the point in time when the police have to decide who they will serve. A vast number of officers defecting from duty will send a clear message and force NYC to reevaluate their position.
Gonna be a long night for those folks, and any of us who decide to stay up and watch.
KO is running the livestream on CurrentTV!
Not tonight but they have before, many times.
I wouldn’t be that optimistic. Remember that cliche about where your paycheck comes from.
But also remember divide & conquer cliche. Offer cops pizza, talk to them about Wall St stealing their pension. Get the MOS (man on street) on your side.

I just don’t get it. Why not let them march down Wall Street?
It’s almost 9:00 for Pete’s Sake! There is no business going on.
Yeah, and any list of demands does not have the imprimatur of the “movement.”
I typed earlier that this stage of the movement reminds of the consciousness raising phase of that old and useless feminist movement. Got a couple of bra burning sexist comments in return. But still, that is the way to think about his phase of the movement. For participants as well as observers.
Well, we now know where the sidewalks are paved with gold.
It might also be effective to ask the police what they want their childrens’ lives to look like– i.e., “Do you think they will all be able to be police officers?” That might make them think about what they are doing.
HUNDREDS marching west on Cedar St. Streams of crowds in #Zuccotti Park join them. Route uncertain
Alison Kosik from CNN on #OWS.
They’ve decided to defend the symbolism of Wall Street and the Bull over the First Amendment that represents our freedom as Americans. Pretty amazing and stupid, but, unfortunately, not surprising to those who understand how power is managed in this society..
KO just confirmed that he is going to Wall Street Thursday.
Keith O ended his show by saying he’d continue his #OWS coverage on the ground. He’s heading to Liberty Plaza tomorrow.
I owe you a drink, PP. What’ll it be?
Actually, somebody should tell him the best place to be is DC.
Vodka and Cranberry.
Maybe. But think about that carefully. Many cops would want, and indeed for NYC police & firefighters, nothing has been closer to reality than to have generations follow each other.
I assume you are talking about such good jobs no longer being available to kids of kops, but not sure your message would come across that way.
Clearer projection image
That’s absurd. They ARE the pedestrian traffic.
Puhlese keep KO off of OWS. He’s a blow hard self-promoter.
Now there’s irony.
*Slides 1 down the virtual bar* I’m surprised he’s willing to miss the Yankee game tomorrow.
Let them have their empty symbolism victory. Larger crowds much more impt than where they are geographically. Eye on the objective, which for now is growth of movement.
Keith is one of the few friends we have on tv. I’m glad he’s going to take his show there.
(Swig) (swirl) (Gulp)
Yum! True. Maybe he will need to cover the plans for Jobs’ funeral.
Not me. See 458. KO will make it about him and it’s so NOT. He’s hardly a 99%ers and THAT’s what’s worth remembering.
Yes. The discipline is pretty awe-inspiring.
Police scanner here. 30 police officers coming to intersection of Market and Beaver Streets.
OR put differently and more directly and strongly, KO is a 1%er who has learned to make his 1% living off of 99%ers. Think he ought to be greeted with: NO 1%ers ALLOWED!
That’s my favorite.
Oh Brother! Cops are mucking up again. I hope they don’t really hurt anyone.
Being a New Yorker, I’m well aware of the generational thing, but not every child in every generation goes that route. Don’t you think their minds could have concerns about what paths would be available for the others to follow? I would hope so. But, who really knows what’s in a cops mind?
That static or wind sound is killing my ears.
wow, concerns about police costs. I thought Morgan Stanley was picking up the tab?
I don’t mind if people are rich. He’s been a 1% since ESPN. As far as I know, he has not caused anyone to lose their home, etc. Whatever, he helps us.
Twitter is overcapacity
Scanner: Police maneuverings regarding marchers on Cedar Street. SUV (usually black) en route. Calling for units for 30 – 60 marchers.

Hate to complain, they are busting their butts out there.
Twitter needs to have several different trending algorithms because the current one means the most talked about (by the most people) whatever of the moment trends only. So, always expect celebrity/famous ppl deaths to trend or something that appeals to many young people like, #ihateitwhen. Where as #OccupyWallStreet may have the most tweets per minute, hour, day, most repeats per person, but doesn’t trend because 11-18 year olds aren’t spontaneously going apeshit over it.
ta!
Twitter is the Tourettes of the internet. Can’t understand a word of it. Seems like utter garbage. (No offense to Tourettes suffers intended.)
Agree. They may have a million people out as a result of this action. Authority never learns-”just hit what won’t submmit.”
IMO you are too naive. No 1%er “helps” 99%ers unless their publicity helps them more.
Gotta agree with that. We don’t want to be TOO pure.

I’m with Twain on it. 1%ers can be benign, at least. And he has been beneficial in other ways.
Death before tweeting!!
As I recall, commenting was a stretch for you, at first lol
Neither you nor I know what’s in the mind of a human who may be emotionally torn betw a lot of conflicting issues: where his paycheck is coming from, how those very same peeps are out to screw him, how his kids’ futures are (negatively) influenced by broader trends, etc. I would err on the side of trying to get street cops on OWS side, not antagonizing them. That was my only point.
Twitter. Won’t. Load.
Steve Jobs dies, so does the internet.
Just a reminder: O seemed beneficial at the outset.
As an extension, I wouldn’t trust KO as far as I could throw him.
But maybe that’s just me.
Celebrities/celebrity anchors are kept in check at Liberty Park. They aren’t given special treatment. That doesn’t mean some people there don’t fawn over them, but they cannot walk in, interrupt everything, and have people listen to them or do what they say. They follow the same rules everyone else does. As they wander around, people can crowd around them and they can talk, but not interfere with everything else.
That said, we can accept that celebrities and anchors are in the top 10%-1%, and still thank them for support, whether they intend to use it for their own benefit or not (sell books, films, boost ratings) doesn’t really make a difference as long as they’re helping give positive coverage of what is going on when most of the corporate infotainment, and some establishment liberal media, are ignoring or belittling the protests.
Okay. I have to walk the dog and cool the computer down. Later Pups!
Only while I was banned!!! Slanderous wretch.
Yes, I’m the prime example of being duped by Osterity, granted.
I think Olbermann pushed more people in the direction of liberalism than would have entertained it otherwise. Anecdotal, is all.
Banned? Jesus, Mary and Joseph. I’ve been soiled.
twitter back up – let’s see if we can crash it again!
bye, PP
We totally agree on that point. I was just suggesting another possible tactic for doing it. It makes sense to me to try it.

Anarchist *g*
LOL. Probably not the first time.
WTF are they monitoring? Jeebus, have they ever seen a more loving “protest?” They nearly have to be provocateurs. I hope that they are snapped and photos distributed far and wide.
Can’t trust Ratigan or Moore completely either. It’s the world we live in. Reward good behavior and hope they start genuinely sympathizing with protesters, who they’ve shown some interest in for whatever reason (genuine support, product sales, show ratings), to hell with them if they try to stab us in the back. We’ll see. I’m more concerned about the Democratic Party and their faux-grassroots affiliates trying to take this over and kill it by turning it into an election thing like they did in Madison.
I heard things.
*g* no, spew!
Or put differently. I worked on Wall St for 3 decades. I saw their devious and stupidity up close & personal. Has a lot to do why I wouldn’t trust a single one of the 1%ers.
I had a very funny set-to one night awhile ago with a troll who wanted to know if I were a shoe shiner for those 3 decades. I revealed (just bc I was interested in my own explanation) that I was in a weekly standing “risk” meeting with Brady Dougan, then head of CS First Boston Equities division, now head of all of CS. And that I had never responded to the troll without politeness & rational comments while s/he had only responded to me with insults.
Brady Dougan was as schmart as any Wall Streeter I had personal contact with, and that was dumb as a stone. He listened to everything we said as though in a daze, made occasional notes, and did nothing to insulate the firm from excessive risk.
That’s where I come down, as well.
After tonight’s disciplined and wise stand-down, I’m reminded of a scene in Gandhi, when they ordered his re-arrest:
“My God, the man just stopped a revolution!
You are more generous than I would be.
Yeah. I called Moore a useful buffoon on this site and had to hide under my computer stand from the rotten eggs & tomatoes.
He is certainly useful, but I think there’s no doubt but he’s a buffoon too.
Not that familiar with Ratigan except that the first I knew of him he was anchor on cnbc. NOT a rec for someone on the “right” side.
Because the media reaches so many people who are too lazy to smarten up using the internet, talking heads with big bank accounts who support the 99% position but have to watch their butts should not necessarily be treated as tainted goods.
Ethical behavior is not something public people seem to good with.
lol
Understood as to Wall Streeters, but now we’re just talking about getting someone with an audience to do a decent job of covering the occupation. KO and Cenk are the best we could get as far as TV people go. Now there’s only KO. Not to downplay your concern, but we have to be wary of everybody, KO less so because he can deliver an immediate benefit. IMO.
Moore is a powerful message messenger even if he is a caricature of himself. His movies have done more than you or I ever could to move this along.
Your experieces certainly trump any of mine, but I don’t see how we can paint any group of people with such a broad brush.
if the demo grows to a million or two or 5 the media will be forced to cover it and be forced to start to face reality..
We need millions of boots on the ground and I think we might get it.
ultimately they can’t arrest 10,000 people… what can they do?
Hey, in fairness, was prob for being where the occupiers are now, back when FDL was still totally dedicated to doing the inside baseball thing with the Democrats. So, my elbows might have seemd a little sharp, but it turns out I was just ahead of the curve. Story of my life. ;-(

Cenk and the Young Turks coming to current t.v. in late October early Nov. Don’t know if you knew that or not. Exciting news.
Interesting, I really didn’t know. I’m so glad you came back and reinvestigated.
Just to be clear, we all agree we wouldn’t want any celeb/pol to take a leadership position, that would really suck. But aren’t we entitled to have our own useful idiots, at worst, or partially sympathetic helpers, at best?
That is the coolest thing, yet!
I’ve got to turn in, pupses.
Turn the lights out when you leave!
ohmmm
Smells like the bridge incident to me (or maybe I’m paranoid…).
Also bear in mind that the young turks were talking shit about #OWS on twitter earlier this week. I’d go back and find the tweets but I’m lazy at 9pm.
So do I. The NYPD are doing all they can to help. Morans.
Nite OmAli!
Agree to both your points. Moore is both a charicature and some one who moves the debate forward. But on the latter point, mostly with preaching to the converted.
A tee-insy sample: in the ladies room after a showing Moore’s film on awful U.S. medical ind. Many comments on how off-putting they found the movie. I understood that as the first and most positive step in destroying the myth of the U.S has the very bestest medical ind in the whole wide world. Wh is a very positive development. Very few could have penetrated the myth to the extent that Moore did in that movie. I am in awe of him for his accomplishment.
While never placing him on a pedestal. Those women were both awakened to something they had never realized before, an awesome accomplishment, but also put off by the messenger.
Just saying.

Well expressed.
IMO, worse than the movement itself.
YMMV.
You beat me to it. Do you ever go to the bathroom or anything?
LS Another march seems to be taking off. Assembly is telling them slow down. Assmebly is telling them to stay together. Sounds like some hotheads or provocateurs are going off in all directions without a plan.
That’s what I concluded years ago. Probably my background in law, markets, psychology, and political science helped me get there faster than otherwise. I’m always trying to see as far ahead as possible. Or, maybe it was just Isaac Asimov with his concept of psychohistory, bless him lol.
LS Shouts of “Stay on the sidewalk’
Check out the white shirt police man in the center of the frame swinging his club like a baseball bat.
LS Chant “Let him go”
I did hear something about that. Good news.
Note the 3 that he’s swinging at have their backs turned and are trying to retreat against the crowd. Also note that he is on the protestor side of the barrier while the police around him are on the opposite side.
Became a member. Never left. Not for a minute.

I like to think that we face very complex problems which impact us in very simple ways.
The solutions may be simple… but I doubt it since they much get a very complex huge bureaucracy to move quite far from where it is.
The simple solution is revolution.. tear it down in one fell swoop.. Lots of pain all around but the solution I favor. Let’s get on with it and re invent.
This tweaking is for the birds.
Sweet dreams, angel.
We’ve started marching again
The last 10 minutes the scanner marked with “Operations related to the Occupy Wall Street protest” in red.
Lovely, huh?
Scumbag mofos. We’ll just have to drown them in people.

Hopefully about to get his 15 minutes of fame.
I thought there was some kind of psych/personality testing that people had to pass before becoming a peace officer…it might be time to re-evaluate how that’s scored…
He wanted to be a baseball player but all he got was a lousy badge.
He can still swing for the fences, though.
The entire national security state is the haven for sadists… They are welcomed, recruited and embraced. These are defective human beings.

Not much inclined to tweaking myself. Hoping this movement can get it done w/o violence, but it’s just a hope. Whole rotten edifice needs to be replaced with something cleaner. It’s beyond repair.
Nah, he’s just talking about his penis. When he’s home alone.
Could be. Could very well be.
Not a good sign
Yeah, you can only get hired if you test out as a sadistic psychopathic personality.

I’m a young adult. 27. My goal in life up until about a month ago was to be a cop. After what we witnessed with the BART protests and what we’ve seen in NYC I no longer wan to be a cop.
Our police force has been corrupted and militarized. It no longer functions as a protection for society. I couldn’t do the things they ask of their officers, nor could I stand by and watch a coworker do what they’re doing now.
At least in NY, right? Wtf
Some men have no choice, my dear lol.
Sickening watching Ed whateverhisnameis on MSNBC asserting the crowd at OWS is Pro-Obama. What fucking planet is he on?
It doesn’t matter what he says. Besides, it’s a useful fiction tonight.
Who knows but sadism is nurtured… and they are all over the place.
I am going to bed… tomorrow the revolution continues.
power to the people!
His tongue is so far up Obama’s ass that it’s a wonder he can talk. The only reason he doesn’t have a mouthful of shit is that Obama spouts all his shit orally, daily.
So tonight was let the unions all have their moment then cut the provocateurs loose on the “hippies” / young kiddies.
Hey, for all we know there may be special breeding farms for them. The supply never seems to run out. Just sayin’ . . .
I’m amazed that you’re still covering this with us, Kevin. You must be beat. When do you sleep?
Now you’re thinking clearly. BTW, I hate you for being only 27. (Ah, fuck, I should probably have said “envy.”)
Nice video clip from earlier tonight. Peoples’ Mic.
Native New Yorker here. Plenty of opportunity to observe.
Was just gonna post that, dammit.
Don’t hate me because I’m 27. Hate me because I’m Catholic.
(but I’m not.)
Useful?
Post it anyway
And welcome, haven’t seen you around yet this evening.
Thanks for the upcoming nightmares, Kris.
LOL
Looks that way, don’t it? I wonder if they are relying on blanket coverage of Jobs’ death to keep this out of the media for the next news cycle.
There’s brain bleach on the shelf over there. I think it’s left over from the last Frothy Santorum article.
Hmmm …

A. You will know the NYPD is serious when they have enough buses to pick up everyone in Zuccotti. Which they probably do somewhere if they have the red nets around it.
B. You will know they are serious when they have put fence and barbed wire around the mass detention center, the stockyards, port terminal, stadium, wherever …
Which will be game point and match when people keep showing up to be arrested day after day.

It was necessary to have another march tonight in order to (1) remind people that discipline wins more than impulse, (2) show the normal character of the movement if there are no provocateurs in the mix, (3) give time for videos of the police attack to surface while folks were following the second march. It was fortuitous and added to the strength of having 20,000 at the afternoon rally.
I’m back, and have been largely caught up on the comments reading them on my BB at work.
We have reached a new point: my PARENTS saw it on the news and started a rant about bankers and Vietnam. (My dad VOLUNTEERED for the USAF in 1965, was a drill sergeant and spent a year freezing in a remote base in Alaska, and is not the type to often complain… but he was brought up as an FDR Democrat and was part of the leadership of a union local once.)

It means the NYPD has finally found a “public safety” issue they can use to shut down Occupy Wall Street. And from this point on, all future protests the 1% don’t like will be shut down as “soft targets.”

Exactly. The people they need to fear are the police who act on the behalf of the 1% owned 2-party ruled government. Highly unlikely, especially with so many police around, some nutball will target them for a terrorist attack.
I’m guessing at this point Liberty Park is safe for another night.
1. if the police can force themselves into protester costumes, they can also force themselves in extremist right winger costumes.
2. we’ve seen the police stand by in many instances while people got injured and killed. just depends whether they want to see what’s before their very eyes.

I suspect it’s more likely that the NYPD will ask the FBI to get some kid to try to buy Semtex, rat bait and a one way ticket to NYC.
hi all,
i’m in from the last occupyaustin ga before our occupation starts tomorrow morning. police presence was discreetly on the periphery, but way more police around the plaza than usual. the waiter across the street told me he saw 8 police cars and a number of polices on motorcycles. he said, it being city hall, there were always some police, but nothing like tonight. i guess they’re practising for tomorrow.
we convene in the plaza in front of city hall tomorrow at 10:00am. it’s also a city council meeting day so it should be lively. ga at 3:00 pm and thereafter ga’s will be at 1:00 and 7:00 pm.
i arranged for someone to teach an nvc (non-violent communication) class in the 7:00 pm education slot tomorrow night.
while i was there, another woman was showing me the tweets about apple’s jobs dying and about the riot the nypd created. it really sickens me about the nypd and bloomber.
could be. nypd is not a one trick horse.
Ray Kelly and BLOOMIE are in panic mood.
I expect DC or some sane person to take over the NYC response to OWS
if this continues, you will have revolt inside the NYPD and this will make the situation much worse
the more the NYPD attacks OWS, the stronger it will become, and the more it will spread.
Bloomie and Ray Kelly did not learn anything from saturday.
if Bloomie and Ray Kelly stay in charge Wall Street will fall quickly, because these two morons are pouring a can full or rocket fuel on a gas fire.
Whoa the #ows hashtag is certainly being reclaimed since they announced it was to be the new central hashtag.

ALERT: The 2nd biggest heist of the decade is about to occur, which Rolling Stone blogger Matt Taibbi warned us about several weeks ago.
The last “repatriation tax holiday” in 2004 enabled big business to hide billions in profits offshore, bring the money back to the U.S. for one day to avoid paying taxes, then pocketed all of it (bonuses, etc.) without “reinvesting” in any new businesses or jobs.
This time, it’s $1.4 trillion (with a T) in offshore tax havens that Senators Kay Hagan (D-NC) and John McCain (R-Ariz) hope, and I stress hope, that it will be a shot to our economy. It will likely be a shot to the wallets of fat-cat Wall Streeters and banksters.

US Senators Plan To Introduce Repatriation Tax Break Bill
Published October 05, 2011 |
Dow Jones Newswires
–Sens. John McCain and Kay Hagan will co-sponsor legislation reducing taxes U.S. multinationals would pay when bringing home overseas profits.
–The Foreign Earnings Reinvestment Act would create an incentive for companies to bring back an estimated $1.4 trillion kept overseas.
–Critics question whether such an effort would create more jobs or spur more domestic investment. (Updates with comment from Sen. Schumer beginning in the 6th paragraph.)
WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)
–A bipartisan pair of senators plans to introduce on Thursday a bill proposing a tax break for U.S. companies that bring home foreign profits.
Sens. John McCain (R., Ariz.) and Kay Hagan (D., N.C.) will co-sponsor legislation that would create a repatriation tax holiday, reducing the corporate taxes that U.S. multinationals would pay when bringing home overseas profits, in an effort to boost the economy.
Their bill, called the Foreign Earnings Reinvestment Act, would create an incentive for companies to bring back an estimated $1.4 trillion currently kept overseas, according to an advisory from their offices.
Rep. Kevin Brady (R., Texas) previously introduced a similar bill in the House in May that would tax overseas corporate profits brought back to the U.S. at a roughly 5% rate, rather than the top corporate rate of 35%.
Major U.S. companies including Google Inc. (GOOG), Apple Inc. (AAPL), Pfizer Inc. (PFE) and Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) have pushed for a repatriation effort. However, critics, including the conservative think-tank Heritage Foundation, have questioned whether a repatriation effort would create more jobs or spur more domestic investment.
Congress previously passed a repatriation tax break in 2004, billed then as a one-time fix.
Even before the bill is formally introduced, its chances of being approved by lawmakers were downplayed by a top Senate Democrat.
“I don’t think repatriation could move through the Senate on its own,” said Sen. Charles Schumer (D., N.Y.), the No. 3-ranking Senate Democrat and a senior member of the tax-policy writing finance committee.-

One addition. If this corporate tax holiday comes to pass, it should give Wall Street and banksters enough money to not only shower themselves with bonuses, but enough for the bribes needed to continue financing our politicians — until they get their hands on social security and medicare.
Everytime I hear a loud SF “anarchist” insist on keeping up the tents (ensuring #OccupySF’s end), I bet I’m hearing an infiltrator/disruptor.
Gotta admit – changing the focus from continuing #OccupySF to “fight the power, keep the tents” is a very clever disruption strategy. Hope it fails.
Woot!
We’ve been watching for that one as well.
Think HAMP, any US program to the financial industry is only going to line the Bankers’ and their friends’ pockets. Damn the customer and increase the take home dominates US “corporations” today.
The yardstick used to retain and promote executives, i.e. short term profits, has winnowed out anyone with a shred of ethics and rewarded those who can best cook the books. The whistleblowers get terminated with prejudice. No one home at all in the accounting, regulatory, or prosecutorial agencies. Time to reread Upton Sinclair and extrapolate.
What that means is goons. Whose goons remains to be seen. There are enough winger trolls that some could be self-recruited. Or private security hired by someone. The statement is either a statement of fact or cover for something else.
One need only remember that it wasn’t the cops who killed civil rights workers 40-50 years ago.
Now, more shuteye for me.

WOW, but it exposes their true weakness. Everybody needs to get their money out of the big banks, that will turbo charge the protests on wall street. If we take our money out of the big banks, we stop feeding them, and teh vampire sqids will collapse. Right now the FEd and central bankers are working behind the scene with a new plan that will not help us. If we preempt them and take our money out we can create change on our terms.
Good morning, gw. We are indeed being allowed to get glimpses of the iron fist of fascism. It can get a lot worse. Please be very careful and safe today. Sending good energy your way.

Kevin, I think yesterday in the LS, a OWS participant was interviewed about why he was there and he held up a series of cards with economic data.. They were great. I wish the cards were available as pdf’s.
Any chance of finding out about those graphics?
every dollar in a bank gives the bank leverage of 10 – 15 times, so it is $10 -$15 dollars to them. Believe me it would really hurt the banks, and it would stop the FED. Under its mandate the FED can only lend to banks that are solvent, so by taking money out of banks we also stop the FED

Interesting question. Do not credit unions have reserve accounts at the Fed?
Agree it would be effective if enough people did it with enough money, just feel that FDL readers don’t have enough money to make a difference.
Kevin is in DC on assignment now.
You can go to Livestream and hunt them.
New liveblog up above. Thankfully.
Truth be told, the big banks are insolvent now, and it’s their own doing.
They sold each other an immense pile of BS MBSs that are now worth nothing, and they’re trying to solve their problem by stealing from us.
They fleeced the third world, they fleeced our government, they fleeced each other, and when their leverage bubble burst they frantically started looking for funds to keep the party going.
They have their sights on SS and our public health funding, private pension funds and our future wages.
It reminds me of how an old lawyer friend once described a mutual acquaintance; “He’d fuck himself if he could ….”
In any case they are in a panic about their position, they’re trying to extort the common wealth of nations as is seen in Greece, and their failure in Europe will impact our country too.
Their rackets have impoverished the world and now they intend to finish us off for dessert.
But …
The game they’ve been playing has destroyed their own future too, and in a way what we’re doing right now is an intervention to force them to admit it.
They are insolvent, the government is helping them deny this fact and we’re insisting the face reality.
