The growing movement was able to get at least 20,000 people out on the streets of New York yesterday. Occupy Wall Street may not have had a demand, but it always had one goal. Adbusters‘ call for people to occupy Wall Street declared, “ On September 17, we want to see 20,000 people flood into lower Manhattan, set up tents, kitchens, peaceful barricades and occupy.” The occupation finally got what it had aimed for (even if it didn’t pan out like Adbusters envisioned).
But, are these tens of thousands of people, many of them members of unions, actually going to help infuse the movement with energy that supports the broad vision of Occupy Wall Street? Will it allow for Occupy Wall Street to continue to imagine moving America toward a more equitable society where Wall Street and the richest 1% do not control the direction of government? Or, is it about to be totally hijacked by liberal groups who seek to use the Occupy Wall Street as some kind of “Tea Party of the left”? Will Obama 2012 campaign operatives start to bait the Occupy Wall Street organizers so that some of their supporters peel off and use the energy they have gained from this movement to re-elect Democrats and Obama and to even elect new “better” Democrats in 2012?
That is the key question that I start to unpack with this analysis I recently posted called, “Occupy Wall Street: What Liberals Aim to Do with the Movement’s Energy.”
There was police brutality last night. Video of what happened will be going up throughout the day and the media that covered the pepper-spraying and what happened on the Brooklyn Bridge may cover the brutality that took place in the context of those previous incidents. That will benefit Occupy Wall Street because it really does seem that some emboldened occupiers planned to literally take Wall Street yesterday and jump the barricades and were met with a forceful response from NYPD officers. That doesn’t justify the beatings by police but occupiers do seem to bear more responsibility for what happened than they did on the bridge or on the sidewalks when protesters were roughed up and pepper-sprayed.
That is not to say that occupiers cannot use this to their advantage. The police are acting as the palace guard for the financial elite, the corporate financiers of US government. Corporations and institutions are being protected from photos and video being taken of angry Americans storming down Wall Street shouting, “We are the 99%! We are the 99%!” The extent to which they are willing to pepper spray protesters and beat them down with batons and throw citizens’ bodies to the ground is directly related to the orders from the highest ranking officers to protect the financial hub of America from what NYPD likely regards as “hippies” or “hoodlums.”
FDL’s premier live blog on Occupy Wall Street continues. Here’s the Twitter list of people to follow. FDL will be live from Freedom Plaza and there will be a stream or link posted soon to follow the first day of October 2011.

11:40 PM So good luck with making OWS into the liberal Tea Party or shock troops for electing Democrats in 2012.
11:38 PM Rania Khalek, with good post on today’s action in Freedom Plaza over at AlterNet:
The occupiers of Freedom Plaza are pumped with energy and inspiration from Occupy Wall Street and the growing occupation movement across the country. Most everyone I spoke with said they planned to stay as long as it takes for the voices of the 99 percent to be heard.

3:56 PM Super commentary from Matt Stoller. In his post, “The Anti-Politics of Occupy Wall Street,” he outlines why it is so hard for power and the media to understand Occupy Wall Street:
…One of the most constant complaints one hears in DC about #OccupyWallStreet is that the group has no demands. Its message isn’t tight. It has no leaders. It has no policy agenda. Just what does “it” want, anyway? On the other side of the aisle, one hears a sort of sneering “get a job” line, an angry reaction to a phenomenon no one in power really understands. The gnashing of teeth veers quickly from condescension to irritation and back. Many liberal groups want to “help” by offering a more mainstream version, by explaining it to the press, by cheering how great the occupation is while carefully ensuring that wiser and more experienced hands eventually take over. These impulses are guiding by the received assumptions about how power works in modern America. Power must flow through narrow media channels, it must be packaged and financed by corporations, unions, or foundations, it must be turned into revenue flows that can then be securitized. It must scale so leaders can channel it efficiently into the preset creek bed of modern capitalism. True public spaces like this one are complete mysteries to these people; left, right, center in America are used to shopping mall politics.
3:52 PM October 2011 has become Occupy DC. I’m just going to call it Occupy DC because it has merged with the great people who were in McPherson Square. People will see what is going on as part of the Occupy Together movement.

will obama and dems try to highjack the protest? great question kevin. what can we all do to make sure that doesn’t happen. Thanks for all your hard work.
also did you know that O in his press conference said ‘we have seen no prosecutions on wall street because they didn’t do anything illegal” I think getting messages like that out will keep people from being highjacked by Obama, and one could add ‘that the millions he has taken from the bankers is so he doesn’t go after them
Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth RIP
You want to know how to win through nonviolent direct action. Rev. Shuttlesworth is one of the ones who showed how it was done in the face of Bull Connor.
He died yesterday.
Americans, not Liberals or Conservatives or Independents or whatever have to decide what kind of America we want to live in.
State sponsored Capitalism is Fascism and 99% of Americans are not doing well under this system. Obama should give back all his corporate money and pledge not to take any in the future then we can listen to his words again. Rihanna gave back her Ghadafi money; President Obama and any other pols give back your corp money and pledge to support getting money out of the political process. The 99% should welcome a convert but not a con artist.
I have no doubt that the Dems are discussing how to best take advantage of this movement for their own electoral purposes. They may be corrupt but they’re not stupid.
As for the brutality of the NYPD, I’m reminded of a scene from the movie Ghandi were his supporters were trying to enter an place only to be met by police with clubs who were intent on preventing their entry. They continued to send men into the police lines to be bludgened hour after hour. The effect of this was to rally world opinion. I’m not suggesting that these Occupiers offer themselves up for continuous beatings but as long as the police continue to abuse their authority by beating and pepper spraying the demonstators the opinion of the world will surely turn against the PTB.
LS Hip-hop: Silence is for suckers
I agree that Obama is doing a great job preventing the liberal establishment from co-opting Occupy Wall Street.
We sadly lack brave people who stand for what they believe in today. He was one. Thanks for reminding us.
one thing I do not understand about the police is they are the 99%. their families, friends are the 99%. why would they be so aggressive?

Not a “better” Democrat in sight. Let’s start over.
Many of these things ring familiar from the antiwar protests of the late 1960′s. There were usually shock troops present that did things that brought down the law on them, while the large bulk of protesters were peaceful. Somehow the combination worked. The main danger was agents provocateur who were secretly in league with people opposed to the goals, and trying to discredit the movement. They didn’t succeed, primarily because the bulk of the people acted in ways that were effective. Violence by police usually backfired against them.
As far as the risks from being co-opted, the Tahir Square protests thrived on a vigorous mix of factions, but kept their focus on removing the problem. “The people want to change the regime!” (the whole rotten system) …

At some point, we who sit and watch and offer such advice must be willing to submit our own bodies for abuse, if that is to be the strategy that is believed to be necessary. It cannot be expected of the occupiers that they take all the risk for OUR freedom.

I just skimmed through the wikipedia pages for the Greek and Spanish ‘occupation type’ protests, and didn’t see where they had accomplished a single goal. E.g., the Greek wiki page says that the he Real Democracy Now! movement
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Spanish_protests
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010%E2%80%932011_Greek_protests
Turns out I have a relative in Greece who is famous for going after tax dodgers, so “harder taxation of the rich” might be a semi-accomplished goal. However, I’m pretty sure the government would have done so, even absent the occupation protests, due to pressure from financiers. Hence, I’m still left with my conclusion of a zero success rate, for the Greek protests.
I have no problem with the US protestors not putting any faith in the Democratic and Republican parties as they are currently being led and run. I also don’t have a problem with celebrating the success, so far, of the US occupation movement, based on it’s growth rate and based on the fact that it’s enabled political cooperation in a way that wasn’t exploited much in the US, previously. It’s also a victory because it’s given people hope.
However, to not simultaneously fight for electoral victories seems awfuly stupid, to me. The Tea Parties both demonstrated and organized, electorally. The WI Dems both demonstrated and organized, electorally.
What possible excuse can OWS have to not both demonstrate, and organize electorally? To say that electoral politics has failed, overall is an observation that a reasonably bright 12-year-old could make. To say that electoral politics is completely futile ignores the recent history of the US.
I liked this quote from the Spanish uprising wikipedia page:
Question, boys and girls: Who accomplished more real political change: the Arab protesters, or the Greek and Spanish protesters?
If you can answer this question correctly, IMO you will be able to make a more accurate prediction about what the US OccupyX movements will achieve, if they persist in ignoring their electoral opportunities.
From where I sit, I see the Occupy Wall Street protests, if they follow their current trajectory, to be a net/net loss for progressives, at least at the national level. The occupations may well spawn cooperatives that operate well at a local level, that may supplant many functions of local government. That’s great, as far as it goes. However, try shutting down a dangerous nuclear plant with your local cooperative. You will likely fail, and as the Japanese have found out, even one catastrophic nuclear event can ruin your whole day…. There are radioactive hotspots in Tokyo that exceed readings found in the Chernobyl exclusion zone.
If anybody knows of any examples in Europe of occupy type movements leading to significant reform via an electoral pathway, or even attempt at such, please post it as a diary. An electoral pathway could be either the formation of a new party, or else reform of an existing party.
Your absolutly right and if I could I would. I’m swimming as fast as I can just to keep my head above water.(as I’m sure most of us are) If I had even a modest level of comfort I would be out there but I don’t. Too many others depend on me to pay the bills. I have to depend on OWS to make a stand that I am unable to make.

OT– Where are they? Looks like down town by the river.
Huh?
This is their livelihood. If they do what they’re told, they get paid, and validated, and since the department and the PTB will protect them, they’re relieved of the burden of personal judgement or moral choice.
If they do not do what they’re told, then they’re fired, and disgraced, and they pretty much have to abandon their career and try to survive on whatever other job they can find in a notoriously stingy job market.
For a cop, the choice to obey is tremendously easy, and it will continue to be easy until either the movement grows so large that its success is almost certain, or until the police are asked to do something so utterly unconscionable that they can’t agree to it.
there is also a “mothership” diary and several OWS diaries dominating the ‘rec list’ – jes sayin’

Ed is a bigger cheerleader for O than Rachel Maddow is.
There’s a difference between the main page and diaries. Diaries are very rarely promoted to the main page. The main page is mainly focused on the 2 parties, mainstream media, the Very Serious players (though they denounce the Very Serious at times, they offer no alternative), ignores/belittles grassroots protests unless it’s on the right (until it makes them look extremely suspect, hence they finally started covering OWS and no doubt they’re hoping to co-opt them for their team). The diaries are everyone else who uses the site.

Good. That’s where they should be.
fyi – there was a front page live blog of last night’s march
As long as the ticket to electoral victory is in the billions of dollars, pursuing an electoral solutions is doomed to fail. Money power is expressed through media saturation bombing before elections, selection of “acceptable” candidates to receive their campaign donations, suppressing the popular vote, and gaining redistricting that effectively denies choice of candidates.
People power has to develop ways of winning without involving the traditional use of the media. People power has to find people that it can trust as candidates. To name just a few of the prerequisites to making an electoral strategy relevant again.
Kos is a Third Way Democrat and he runs the blog as such.
Oh sure, in the LONG RUN.
This movement is only 3 weeks old.
Even the Tea Party, which was immediately co-opted by the billionaires and Religious Right (which had spent 30+ years organizing) needed almost 2 years to have any electoral result.
I do basically agree with you from an overall strategic viewpoint, but there is a time to gather strength before trying to exert any direct influence.
RE: Greece, hardly a day goes by that I don’t see some story about it.

Kevin pointed out that the OWS people did, in this case, try to jump the barricades, and so they will be seen as partly to blame for what happened, even though the NYPD reaction was violently over the top. That might be true but by who’s order and by who’s right were those streets closed off? And if the NYPD eventually tries to run the whole crowd out of Liberty Park, who’s fault will it be when some or many resist the order and are beaten and arrested for standing up for their rights. Where does this ‘Protecting the Castles’ shit stop, and when are we within our rights to push our way through whether challenged or not by the NYPD who have chosen the path of enabler of the 1%?
Got it. NM.
I am old enough to get away with talking about how adorably earnest he is — whatta hoss !
I know. They started covering it a lot starting a few days ago. I think the fact the recommended diaries on the right has been dominated by 3-5 OWS diaries everyday since it started put pressure on them. They’ve also been consistently in the news. I believe for about 2 weeks there wasn’t a single post on the front page about them though.
Like I said, I think their coverage now is both a combination of pressure (not covering them looks extremely suspect when everyone else is) and them hoping to appear to be on the side of the protesters. So people may link to the site or say good things about their coverage, people go there, and get sucked back into partisan thinking.
He’s really special and brilliant.
We’re within our rights now. For the NYPD to do what they did last night was heinous and unconstitutional. The mass of police at the mouth of Wall Street specifically in place to protect the private property of their corporate benefactors was the image that sealed the deal.
The NYPD as an institution is a wholly bought and paid-for militarized private security force. Instead of actually protecting the buildings while allowing people to march they simply denied protestors access to public property while impinging on their 1st Amendment rights.
Bullshit. I call bullshit on them all.
Dimon bought himself a police department. They behave accordingly.
That’s plain out BS. He’s a Howard Dean Democrat “democratic wing of democratic party” stuff. That means he’s a very partisan Democrat. Definitely not DLC or Third Way.
And he’s more interested in election handicapping than policy.
And running the site as a business.
There are lots of grounds for criticism. Being Third Way is not one of them.
Don’t let his youthful appearance fool you. He is a powerhouse of ideas and action. We are *so* lucky that he’s here at the lake.

at today’s press conference Obama had the gall to tell the American people that there have been no prosecution of Wall Street banksters because they did nothing illegal. As Cornel West said, Obama is nothing more than a Wall Street mascot.
Understood, completely. But, at some point everyone will have to decide to take a stand, or not.
Sure, co-optation is of great concern, but it probably won’t succeed. Here’s why:
First, OWS has opened up a vast democratic (small “d”) space in a nation that has become a two-headed oligarchy. This democratic space is much larger than can be filled by liberals alone. It encompasses all who want to return the United States to its fundamental democratic values. Veal Penners can’t possibly begin to control it.
Second, the OWS movement is occurring at a time when institutional liberals are historically weak. The Democratic Party faces near annihilation in 2012 if the Republicans nominate Romney or another semi-reasonable candidate, and maybe even if they don’t. Organized labor has not been so weak since the 1920s. The AFL-CIO no longer is strong enough to maintain its status as an umbrella labor organization, several major unions (such as AFSCME and SEIU, etc.) having split from it. The one area where organized labor does have residual strength is the public sector, and governmental worker locals tend to be militant in protecting their rights, as shown in Wisconsin. The other Veal Pen organizations, environmental, consumer, etc, don’t have any significant strength beyond their immediate membership.
Third, the OWS marches have revealed a sub-story that has become almost as big as the main story itself, namely, the fascistic character of New York City governance. The brutality of NYC white shirts compares shockingly to the tolerance, and even local support, given to OWS occupations in other cities. What makes the situation more jarring is that NYC is a city with a fundamentally liberal culture, much more so, for example, than Chicago or even Los Angeles. NYC has revealed itself to be a city under occupation by national security forces abetted by local police enforcers, the same as Iraq (during the height of the American occupation) or Afghanistan today. It seems certain that the rifts between the rank and file blue shirts, whose true interests align with the marchers, and their white shirt supervisors are growing with each incident of unwarranted police violence. The ongoing unveiling of the New York City occupation has added a shock value to the protests. Co-optation works under conditions of routine and boredom, not under those of shock and surprise. And on the day that massive numbers of blue shirts join the marches (coming very soon) the movement will assume an unstoppable mass revolutionary character.

If OccupyX stays on a rapid growth rate, and decides a year from now to become electorally aggressive, so that they can make a difference 14 months from now in elections, then I’d be a happy camper.
However, why keep a program like this a secret? Also, do you really believe that this is a hidden plan, based on what you can glean from diaries such as this one, as well as interviews of Occupy Wall Street protesters who were largely ignorant of who their own Congress critters were?
Sorry, not buying it. More likely, you are wishfully thinking. While OccupyX may, indeed, evolve in this direction, it may not. (See Greece and Spain). I’m not inclined to cut people slack based on happy face guesses of them doing, eventually, what I’d like them to do. Seriously. See, e.g., ‘Dreamer’ Van Jones, Naive Fool, or Cynical User? and National Nurses United opts for feel good activism, ignores lessons of Tea Parties and WI Dems
Sorry for my glib dismissal. Kinda caught up in the times. But, on that note, and to answer your question – using a politician’s quote struck me as a bit tone-deaf. Again, though – apologize for any offense.
$4.6 million is pretty effing cheap.
Excellent summation.
“Oblahblah” Love that.
When Obama’s rich friend Henry Louis Gates was ‘arrested’ by a Massachusetts police officer he called the officer’s behavior stupid and summoned Gates and the cop to the white house. Will he do that with Tony Bologna? Well, the woman that was pepper sprayed doesn’t have Gates’ wealth so we know the answer.
+++
There will probably come a point where the decision will have to be made whether to oppose force with force, regrettably. Best hope is to delay that moment as long as possible, and gain strength and support in the meantime. Unfortunately, the police and PTB almost certainly understand that, as well, so they will prefer sooner, rather than later.
OK, folks, need video and photos. You can tip CopBlock.Org ( on Twitter at https://twitter.com/#!/CopBlock ) in parallel.
I’m very concerned that the CIA (hand in hand with the NYPD) will infiltrate #OWS and incite violence. Last night the crowd came very close, but stood down. I think it was a hallmark moment in the protests. 15k people backing down when they could’ve easily overwhelmed the NYPD.
I know! The audacity of saying that nothing illegal happened. Like fabricated robosignitures by some serf on fraudulent mortgage paperwork isn’t illegal? Riiiiight.
De-elect the president!
Thanks.
I will say the cards that were shown on the LS had great graphics…”take-it-to-the-street” effective graphics that had great impact in creating a mental picture to remember the economic point being made on the card.
The difference between the Tea Partiers and OWS is that one of them is inside the establishment. That is why the Tea Partiers can organize and succeed at electing their own politicians. In other words, they are supported by the mega-rich crooks. But I do understand and agree with your point. It certainly wouldn’t hurt to elect good people. OWS has just begun. I believe it has a good chance of flourishing.
The police are probably easy to buy off since they have a real understanding of the tools that will deployed to keep the rabble in order.
“The terrible, cold, cruel part is Wall Street. Rivers of gold flow there from all over the earth, and death comes with it. There, as nowhere else, you feel a total absence of the spirit: herds of men who cannot count past three, herds more who cannot get past six, scorn for pure science and demoniacal respect for the present. And the terrible thing is that the crowd that fills the street believes that the world will always be the same and that it is their duty to keep that huge machine running, day and night, forever.” – Federico Garcia Lorca
Liberty Park 10/5/2011
About 10 mins ago I heard on my car radio:
People are gathering in Jersey City in front of Goldman Sachs HQ.
Just milling about & grumbling…so far.
Could use somebody to appear & focus on something.
A-h-h-h-h, a lot of my ideas deal precisely with how to overcome $$$ disadvantges, by relying on people power. And to be sure: a successful (i.e., large-scale and persistent) OccupyX movement would make it even easier for citizens to cooperate to “throw the bums out”, on a shoestring-like budget. Also, as per jeffroby’s brilliant insight (Full Court Press), even running shoestring, losing campaigns provides opportunities for education and organization of the citizenry. There is still time for OccupyX to embrace minimalistic, Full Court Press types of campaigns in 2012, laying the groundwork for electoral victories in 2014. The political messages that OccupyX’ers would be one’s that they choose, which would include (obviously) bringing Wall Street to heel.
Please note that I’ve suggested that also doing a Republican Party facing Full Court Press. Most of the right wing talking heads seem to be lining up against OWS (big surprise, there). Does it make any sense to needlessly cede mindspace of Republican and Republican-leaning independent voters to the likes of Rush Limbaugh? The OccupyX’ers have tons of electoral and educational opportunities available to them, starting now. The hard core ones are there all the time – they’ve got lots of time to discuss walking and chewing gum, at the same time!
I suggest you read some of my diaries*, and then ask yourself if the Veal Pen actors – who mostly have budgets – are likely to be as unenthusiastic for empowering citizen cooperation in ways such as I suggest, as they are to pretend that they are pressuring corrupt politicians. If the answer is “yes, they’ll be unenthusiastic”, maybe what the rest of my sentence – “for empowering citizen cooperation in ways such as I suggest” – implies is true.
Please think more deeply about these matters.
* many links in this vein in my diary Progressives are Stupid if they don’t seize their opportunity to educate their Republican neighbors
DC – Crowd is slowly growing. March to K Street + Chamber of Commerce planned for aft, larger numbers expected.
I’ve been worried about that sort of thing as well. Some outside group of aggitators creating havoc and delegitimize the movement because we all know nothing would please the MSM more than to have something negative to report about OWS. We see it every time there is some international summit. Massive peaceful protest taken over by anarchist intent on violence for violence sake.

All provocateurs use the same tactics (e.g. b#llsh#t stunts of MSM stunts like Ed Shultz’ yesterday) and we are already there regarding the 99%ers getting it about the minority of them. Meanwhile, the NLG aren’t on the ground for nothing and we aren’t pulling all nighters documenting the sh#t out of all events for kicks. If you’re that concerned, get you and your live stream video cam on the ground as a monitor or hang out here and on Twitter in the after dark/wee hours as a monitor as that’s when the nasty stuff goes down. Or, you could be an National Legal Guild monitor down in the mix. We’ve got plenty of work to do right now– join us!
Nice suggestion, Poor People’s Movements is a definitive text! In the context of that study, Metamars seems hopelessly hopeful.
Here’s another suggestion,
Detroit, I Do Mind Dying: A Study in Urban Revolution.
I suggest that you look at the Occupy Tulsa and Occupy Charlotte YouTubes. That will give you a better idea of what is happening outside the “liberal” coasts.
The best thing about OWS is that it has manifested in global consciousness as an idea inspiring an open, welcoming, and egalitarian global discussion about what is wrong and what must we do to fix it.
Solutions are not preset buttons to push. They will be organically grown from the knowledge and experience gained in the past.
We are in the moment at once participating in the process and watching it happen via the internet and twitter.
This is the first time since homo sapiens sapiens originated approximately 200,000 years ago in southern Africa that such an event has been possible.
Rejoice in the magic of this precious moment and be thankful that you are here at this unique time to experience it.

Thanks, look interesting, although please note that (based on my quick perusal of the amazon.com description) the author poses an either/or question:
I am arguing for doing both. (Well, not really arguing for disruption, but rather “defiance”, in the sense of 24 x 7 boots on the ground, in your face, peaceful political agitation.)
Also, the groups mentioned were basically minorities. What’s most striking to me about our current highly dysfunctional democracy/plutocracy is that popular desires of the majority of the electorate are ignored by the ruling elite for decades on end. The 1% is thwarting the 65% here, and the 59% there! It shouldn’t even take 99% to make radical changes – we already have the numbers for specific, popular programs.
No problem. These are exciting times – no time to grieve over minor misunderstandings!

I don’t think so. Unless you consider that sheer numbers consist of ‘force’. I can see circumstances in which authority shifts to those making the stand, might be worthwhile to school themselves in nonviolent responses to the violence. There are alternatives, and I would think quite a few folk in the mix would be able to give lessons in the peaceful techniques involved. One doesn’t just have to stand or sit and get beat up; neither does one have to respond in kind.
(Listen to me; I haven’t the least idea of what I’m talking about – but I know the young folk do. Many of them are experts in these techniques.)
NOLA PD photographer at Lafayette Square
Early in the occupation, I opined something along the lines of:
“The 1% are going to have to choose: either support limited peaceful reforms soon, or someday the REAL peasant mobs will be at the gates of their fortified mansions.”
OWS and whatever comes from it need to be seen as the better of the 2 options.
However, as was pointed out to me, the 1% are the same folks who created the subprime mess, so they may not be as good at calculating the odds as they think they are.

A question no one is asking and it needs to be asked:
“How many citizens believe in supporting OWS but sense they cannot because they think supporting OWS will cause them to lose their job?”
How many are victims of self-censorship?
Nice. God knows these people understand the corruption of our government. The NOPD is very violent. It takes mucho courage to go against them.

I think Federal Marshals should be called up to deter the illegal brutalities by the NYPD (and PD depts in every city where peaceful protest is being met with police violence). Those officers who are denying American citizens their constitutional right to peacefully protest should be arrested. Police Commissioner Kelly should be made to explain the behavior of his/these civic employees. Mayor Bloomberg should be condemning the brutal treatment of his citizens by these civic employees. The People should not tolerate much more from these sadist brutes.

DC turnout is less than I expected, and it’s a good thing the OccupyWallStreet thing started as I think I’d be quite demoralized as Oct 6th was supposed to be the big left protest of the year. Months of advance work, ton of big name endorsements, etc. It may grow like NYC by following the occupy idea. I don’t think that was originally part of the plan but added after the success of OWS, unless I’m mistaken.
General assembly chalk wall tribute to Steve Jobs
As a result of Occupy DC, the focus seemed to shift from the mass marches of the past to show strength to one or another of the parties in Congress to starting an Occupy K Street framing. That can only be good. And then there is Saturday, and on Monday Van Jones’s Rebuilding the Dream comes to town for six days. (I think that’s the sequence of events.) The coalition is building. The problem will be keeping the focus on the top-down split that embraces the 99%.
That video is incredibly grainy, but turnout is huge. If the 3k estimate for DC today is correct, Occupy Portland had a larger turnout. Portland attracts left leaning ppl and left leaning cool kids. NYC attracts MBA grads, people seeking fame and fortune, socially liberal but otherwise too cool to do anything activist related cool kids (though that may be changing as the size of OWS grows). DC attracts those who love beltway politics. SF used to attract the people Portland does now, but the cost of living there is too high for many now.
Is this another wave or just a lagged report of the earlier action?

Very fair segment considering it’s Yahoo’s version of CNBC/Bloomberg. Reporter didn’t throw in own bias or loaded questions or choose the worse responses to air.
Gilroy is the Garlic Capital of the world – seriously. Great town.
I lived about 30 miles from there my whole life, up to a few months ago. Killer town. Great food. A LOT of low wage labor and seasonal migrant work. It’s a farming town.

Must be. I love garlic.
At the Garlic Festival every year they even have garlic ice cream. Haven’t tried it but I would like to.

It’s really pathetic when they bring out SWAT teams for peaceful demonstrations. Why not the National Guard or maybe the SEALS? s/

Gee, don’t all the mayors do that? Now where’s Bloomberg [NYC]? Where’s Gray [DC]? Lee [San Francisco]?
They’re looking for their comfy shoes. Like Obama.
Wish we could fly over the Occupy Portland crowd to NYC or DC. That or exchange them with the socially liberal people who are barely making it but think they’re way too cool for protests. Portland isn’t a major power center and it already has one of the most progressive governments in the US.
Bloomberg is busy ironing his Napoleon uniform. Don’t know anything about Gray. And I’m sorta surprised that Lee hasn’t stepped in considering how liberal SF is – although the Chinese community appears to be rather conservative (I don’t mean Republican).
And if the economy were better in Portland, I’d be trying to move there right now.

Sometimes it feels like it. How’s Austin doing. Are they still cool with the APD?
Great quality pics from #OccupyAustin today.
As far as I know everything’s okay. I’m following the twitter feed. The livestream isn’t really conveying much because the lighting is terrible at City Hall at night.
Everything seems really peaceful so far. The police presence is minimal.

That’s kewl and I see from the video that the inventor has a sense of humor. If you can, wear the proper layers underneath as the northwest appears to be back into the rainy, cold season as of late September.
OT– For some reason many folks have been going back and forth between Portland and Austin for many, many decades now.
I would guess they are getting some nuclear-tipped missiles ready. Just trying to find cops fat enough to carry them.
Watch it. The next attempt to shut down Occupy Together will be to spread the rumor that it’s been hijacked. That tweet is being spammed.
Both are small hippy/liberal towns in states with very right wing folks living in the Hinterland.
The @Newyorkist is like the unintentional gossip source for Liberty Park.
Gotten the impression from various tweets and my own time down there that the drum circle crowd is the most uncooperative group at the park, at least at night time. I suspect at least a few may be intoxicated or on something, making it difficult to reason with them.

yo.
just back from day 1 of occupyaustin. AND A FINE DAY IT WAS. food not bombs had just come and were feeding people dinner. a marching band came through and punctuated people’s comments during open mike. we had ga in the afternoon and the rest of the day was open mike.
my two favorite signs:
I MAY NOT HAVE A JOB, BUT I DO HAVE AN OCCUPATION
and
AT LEAST YOU COULD BUY ME DINNER IF YOU’RE GOING TO FUCK ME, FEDERAL RESERVE.
i’d never met our police chief before, but he was right in the middle of the crowd early on clearly enjoying the energy and most of the rest of the minimal police presence was at the periphery. they were just in their regular uniforms, not riot gear, nothing intimidating and they were all very friendly and pleasant with people. in fact, i went up and introduced myself to the police chief and thanked him for the way the police were deployed.
i had already overheard him talking to someone else, saying if one person got violent, the police would zero in on that person and not attack the whole crowd. the police chief counted about 1300 early in the day. i chatted with him 3 times during the day. the crowd just kept getting bigger and bigger.
we opened our library. one professor was there having conversations with folks about capitalism. i got his contact info and will put him in touch with the head of the education committee so he can get on the schedule to teach some classes on the education calender. we also had 3 hour long classes after ga tonight at the SCHOOL OF FREE THOUGHT.
the homeless set up a tent city across the bridge. i imagine there will be a problem with that later as austin has a no camping ordinance and the police clearly told them they’d be arrested. in ga, we voted to put out a statement in solidarity with what they were doing.
sweet, high, loving energy. it was really beautiful.
now to look at the pics kris linked to.

Great pic. Nice hat, too.
thanks.
all the people driving by were honking madly. so much support.
Caught between the “base” and the general election. Until the political environment changes, any politician who wants to win the general election will have to say sort of the same things—even in liberal Massachusetts.
Focus.
ugh! that is VERY disappointing.
what did i miss in new york, washington today?
Proud of you. That was an awesome turnout. Good work. Keep up the momentum.
I want to see Occupy Tyler so there’s some hope of getting rid of crazy Louie.
Talib Kweli and Naomi Klein in NYC.
DC was a good solid start.
You did great! Austin did great! Keep it up!!

what does that mean about tyler and crazy louie?

Not a lot that I could see. Waiting on the weekend. I assume you know the NYPD got ugly again last night. Hope it brings out a million.
Right with you on that. For a moment there, she had me thinking she might be for real. Best to learn the truth early. Elections are so 2000, anyway.
Louis Goehmert is from the Tyler area, is he not? If you ever hear him speak, he’s in need of some sort of intervention.
thanks, beauty.
i’m high as a kite.
i did one intervention with a guy who was shouting down a speaker on open mike with his own message. we chatted a while and became buddies and he then agreed to go to the mike line and wait his turn.
one of the men went and calmed down someone insisting on smoking in the middle of the crowd even though ga had voted on a designated smoking area. once he got calm, he was willing to head towards the smoking area.
in both cases, there was love and respect and inclusion.
i think the guy i helped just didn’t realize he could empower himself by taking a turn at the mike. the crowd had been booing him when he interrupted the other speaker, but he turned out to be a great speaker and everyone was cheering him.
one woman early on who spoke talked about being well off and having a good job and her boss even giving her the day off to come for the day and how she recognized she was one of the lucky ones and she was there for all the people who weren’t able to have all she had. i started crying.
yes, i saw the stuff from last night.
i see from the google that gohmert is a us congressman from the tyler area, but i never heard of him before you mentioned him.
Well for the moment, elections are so 2000. Or 1980. Or 1968, for that matter.
You see. We here are still clawing our way back from Jesse Helms and his pseudo-candor. The past three years have not done well for any of NC’s politicians. You have to say that the election of Barack Obama has done more to show where the money is buying favors in both parties than most previous elections.
So your question about Elizabeth Warren is who is going to own her in Congress. Follow the money. Then decide as you must.
It’s like the nickel slots. Worth playing once every two years as long as you don’t get fixated on winning or losing.
Search on YouTube for some of his clips
Wow and good job. After awhile some of you will get to know each other well enough to occupy the 1886 for a decent cup of java.

i haven’t eaten there, but the architecture of the driskoll makes it my favorite building in austin.
It’s you!
well, i got through 3 and 1/2 minutes out of 9 something before a permanent aversion to gohmert set in. gak!
I just ran to the store and got food, drinks and sign making supplies for Saturday. Greenwarrior will not be alone
See what I mean by intervention.
Jeebus. FDL has raiser their $10k, just about. Right under $9,500.
I hope most of this goes to provide for the FDL authors on the ground at DC and around the country.
more photos from occupyaustin on the alternative weekly’s website.
agreed that he needs an intervention, but it would take a better woman than me to want to approach anywhere near that one.
y’all better say hi, now that you know what i look like.
From facebook.
He needs the intervention even if you’ve never heard him speak lol.
We certainly will. We should get there (me, wifey, kiddos and dog. where there dogs there today?) between 11 and 12 on Saturday.
Very good and I expect, Kris, that your lovely wife will be there as you’ve explained previously. I’ve got the Austin live stream at my finger tips. I’ll be checking in on all of you. Walk by the LS from time to time and show us your signs! Your pups can carry their little sandwich boards too.
Good night, folks. Great job Austin FDLers.
Thank you, TarheelDem. Mañana!
there weren’t many dogs, but there were some. it’ll be fine to bring your dog. just remember to bring a bowl for him/her for water.
it rained on us a little today. that was awesome.
My little one’s birthday is tomorrow. I’m thinking of having her make a sign that says “I turned 6 yesterday!” on 1 side and “I am the 99%” on the other.
Pfft. We’re 20 miles north and we got NOTHING! Though it’s supposed to rain quite a bit on Sunday. Just in time for Charlotte’s 6th b-day party at the park.
i don’t know that it rained at my house either.
it was fun while it lasted though. i encouraged the folks with tinfoil hats, saying the motu had had the clouds seeded specially for day 1 of the occupation.
have y’all noticed the cows on the livesteam? one’s on it now. we’ve got them all over the city.
Alright folks. I’m off to bed. TarheelDem was amazing today.
Hope everyone stays safe tonight.
Vive la Revolucion!
maybe charlotte could start celebrating her birthday on saturday. there’ll be drummers and dancing no doubt. childcare is offsite, but there were some folks there with children. just no particular activities for them, but the kids all looked like they were having a good time.
I’ve seen some of today’s footage. Sounds like a plan to take the cuties out during the day time. There are still more than 60,000 college students in Austin. On a Friday, I’m thinking the place will be packed.
Yes. We have small plastic ponies hitched to the old horse tethers still around here.
Damn! Nobody told me about those when I was in Portland. Well, I’ll have to do a tour de ponies next time I’m there. Don’t let me forget!
Oh, I forgot, early on there was an asshole editorial writer from the local paper there and I went up to him and requested that he write about the occupation in a respectful way. He said, “Given who I am, that’ll be hard.” And he started ranting about how stupid this all was, that all people had to do to get power was to vote. I mentioned some things to him about that, like the money for tv paid for by corporations, but it didn’t deter him from his rant for one second.
However the same paper had a great front page article this morning that said all the right things.
Marched today in Portland. Fun little walk. My feet and throat are a little sore now. Extremely peaceful w/awesome turnout! I waved and clapped at police and a couple smiled and waved back. (I don’t like cops, but they don’t need to know that – charm can’t hurt!) People of all ages and mostly normal looking – anyone who says it was hippies is either a liar or insane (or didn’t see it).
Can’t do the occupation unfortunately as I need to look for work, but I’m glad I could march today and I wish them best of luck!

I saw some real BS comments by local MSM in the Twitter-verse. I just do the best I can to report what I see and ignore them (no clicks, no Tweets, no ReTweets) as they are so Johnny-come-lately cranky pants who have not even bothered to do their homework.
I can’t stay up too beat from work, but wanted to forward this email I got from the NYCLU:
(The short version: send evidence of police misconduct to :protest@nyclu.org )
Dear friend,
As the Occupy Wall Street movement gains steam, the NYCLU is standing beside the demonstrators and defending their right to speak their minds.
Teams of NYCLU staff and volunteers regularly visit the movement’s headquarters at Zuccotti Park to distribute our Know Your Rights information and engage the demonstrators’ on their experiences with the NYPD.
The park’s makeshift library is well-stocked with our Demonstrating in New York City and What to Do if You’re Stopped by Police guides.
And perhaps most importantly, our royal blue-clad legal observers are on hand monitoring police activity and recording any instances of police misconduct.
We will hold the police accountable for any misconduct. You can help us.
If you or somebody you know has been the victim of police misconduct associated with the protests, if you’ve seen the police engaging in intimidating behavior or using video cameras in a way that chills the right to protest, or if you’v seen the police doing something right, please tell us about it. Email protest@nyclu.org and tell your story. We’ve collecting your videos and photos, too.
We all know how powerful it was to see the video of an NYPD “white shirt” using pepper spray on protesters. Your story, pictures and videos can help us hold the NYPD accountable and strengthen the protest rights of all New Yorkers.
Please take a minute to drop us a line at protest@nyclu.org and tell us what you see.
Thank you for all that you do,
Donna Lieberman
NYCLU Executive Director
Nice. Thank you for posting that.
