Occupy Wall Street is in crisis mode today, as they prepare to confront a forced cleaning of Liberty Park, where they are holding their occupation. The occupiers suspect the cleaning by the city will be used to disperse the camp and bring an end to Occupy Wall Street. They also suspect there will be a confrontation between NYPD and occupiers as barricades and chains are used to block off the park so the camp does not re-form.
Yesterday, a letter from Brookfield Properties, owner of Liberty Park (which they re-named Zuccotti Park), to NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly was leaked. The letter from the owner declares:
We fully support the rights of free speech and assembly, but the manner in which the protesters are occupying the Park violates the law, violates the rules of the Park, deprives the community of its rights of quiet enjoyment to the Park, and creates health and public safety issues that need to be addressed immediately.
The letter aims to communicate the park owner’s belief that there has been damage to the park by materials and equipment brought into the park. It attempts to convey the owner’s feeling that the “conditions at the park have deteriorated to unsanitary and unsafe levels.”
Brookfield Properties has been trying for weeks to get the city to respond to their growing fear and scorn toward the occupiers. Now, Brookfield has gotten New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg to come down and inform the occupiers that there will be a cleaning.
The occupiers are trying to pre-empt the cleaning with the hopes that they can satisfy the park owner or expose the city for trying to effectively end Occupy Wall Street. Right now, they have brooms and mops out and are scrubbing and sweeping the park.
Reuters reports the park has “notified protesters that once each section was reopened after about four hours for clean up, rules would be enforced against camping and/or the erection of tents and other structures, lying down on the ground or benches, placing tarps or sleeping bags on the ground, storage of personal property.”
It certainly seems like the occupiers are going to be run out of the park and prevented from re-establishing their camp. That is why the occupiers are considering a plan to lock arms and surround it to prevent workers from entering to clean the park.

I am in Boston and about to go down to Occupy Boston. There will be a rally at 3:30 pm and an action in front of a local Verizon branch at 5 pm to demand a fair union contract. I hope to meet some of the occupiers, record interviews with some of them on the police raid at 1:30 am on Tuesday and hear about their vision and plans for Occupy Boston.
I then will be heading back on Friday to see what happens with this forced cleaning and to cover the massive demonstrations on Saturday, October 15.
FDL’s premier live blog continues. Here is a Twitter list to follow for the latest updates.

1:56 AM Occupy Seattle has ten people arrested, occupiers believe they are about to be evicted and forced to disperse by police
1:36 AM While I was sleeping for about an hour—the only sleep I will probably get before the action begins to really unfold at Liberty Park, the “progressive” Democratic governor of Denver, John Hickenlooper, decided it was time for the occupiers to go:

I am monitoring the action now. @OccupyDenver tweeted that the eviction by force could take place any time from now until 5 am. It is 11:45 pm in Denver right now.

9:37 PM Here is the Emergency Call to Action from Occupy Wall Street organizers [ICYMI]:
Bloomberg says that the park will be open for public usage following the cleaning, but with a notable caveat: Occupy Wall Street participants must follow the “rules”.
NYPD Police Commissioner Ray Kelly has said that they will move in to clear us and we will not be allowed to take sleeping bags, tarps, personal items or gear back into the park.
This is it—this is their attempt to shut down #OWS for good.
PLEASE TAKE ACTION
1) Call 311 (or +1 (212) NEW-YORK if you’re out of town) and tell Bloomberg to support our right to assemble and to not interfere with #OWS.
2) Come to #OWS TONIGHT AT MIDNIGHT to defend the occupation from eviction.
For those of you who plan to help us hold our ground—which we hope will be all of you—make sure you understand the possible consequences. Be prepared to not get much sleep. Be prepared for possible arrest. Make sure your items are together and ready to go (or already out of the park.) We are pursuing all possible strategies; this is a message of solidarity.
9:31 PMBig Brother is most definitely watching Occupy Boston.
9:20 PM A report from @MichaelKBusch, who is at Zuccotti Park right now: He confirms cops harassed a person who had used a tarp to make a structure. He says the crowd is “healthy” but the park is not overwhelmingly packed yet. The legal team is working stuff out and preparing for the occupiers to make a human chain around Liberty Park and make a stand against the forced cleaning. News trucks are still parked alongside the park. Amy Goodman of Democracy Now! is there. The police presence has not increased is more or less like other nights.
8:38 PM The Dissenter has changed its plans and is headed back to Occupy Wall Street for tomorrow morning’s imminent standoff between the occupiers and the police, park owner and the city. The action could begin as early as 4 am. I will be into New York by 2:30 am.
8:37 PM Photo from @MMFlint of occupiers cleaning the park so they can neutralize the property owner and city’s excuse to have the occupation evicted tomorrow morning at 6 am ET:

8:36 PM @RDevro reports: “Protesters reportedly attempted to deliver stack of petitions to Bloomberg at Cipriani (restaurant) but were turned away by security.”
3:50 PM My Pictures from Boston:
2:42 PM Occupy Colleges is having a big day today. Student actions will be taking place at 4 pm ET.
2:40 PM Occupy Wall Street GA approves Community Beautification project. They will be spending $3,000 of their own funds to broom, mop and power wash the park before the park owner tries to force them out tomorrow.

someplace spotted call for “Occupy Central Park” at some point next week…
Ah, the old “the protesters are trashing the place so we must clean it” lie. Where did we hear that one most recently? Ah, yes, Wisconsin — where it was promptly debunked:
http://blog.preservationnation.org/2011/03/02/demonstrators-treating-historic-wisconsin-state-capitol-with-care-and-respect/
The original plan before they claimed the park was to sleep on the sidewalks in groups of 19 or fewer. It was the NYPD that encouraged Brookfield to let them stay in the park instead. This is all worth remembering.
I can’t tell if this cleaning thing is a real threat or more of the paranoia we see too much of in our movement (something we have in common with the far-right). I find it hard to believe that the Mayor would really do this, knowing that the police will have to arrest thousands and could well spark a riot. I guess I’ll go over at 6 AM tomorrow to support OSW, just in case.

we will need folks to cover Twitter & livestream in the pre-dawn and early morning hours for NYC, but can’t be me as late night at work tonight and will need zzs by then
off to work in a few mins
From watching several general assemblies on livestream, there does not seem to be the panic and paranoia on the ground that there is in the blogosphere.
new sign needed: we are not the ones crapping on you!
If provoking a riot was their real goal, wouldn’t they move in tonight at like 3 AM instead of at 7 AM on a work day?
To be clear, I was not trying to imply that protesters would riot, but that the police raiding the park would cause total chaos that could degenerate into a riot.
Good to hear. I’ll stop by on my way home from work and see what is going on and if support is needed tomorrow morning.

Has anyone suggested carrying pitchforks – a farm implement – that could also be used as a defensive weapon? New York can’t be against farmers showing their tools.
It would scare the brown stuff out of bullies with batons.
Kevin
In your write ups if you could include contact information where people can send money for food etc to protestors. I put a note on FDL without much success. Eventually, found contact information in yesterdat’s Ralph Nader’s piece in Counterpunch.com. this is for NY http://occupywallst.org/
But but but, Mayor Mike, man of the peeps, takes the subway to work. Or at least he did once, for a photo op, when he originally became mayor.
It would be kool if you could get some actual farmers to show up on tractors. Very unlikely to happen, though. The farmers in the area have been inundated this year: 2nd highest rainfall on record & still 2-1/2 months to go. August record exceeded by a foot (Irene & Lee) and September by 8″. A lot lost the majority of their crops. Usual floods are in spring, so they have a chance to recover.
More like, put a gleam in their eyes and shotguns in their hands.
The corporate media is beginning to give play to the 53%ers who call for personal responsibility.
How about truck drivers with their 18 wheelers?
We either watch this lose momentum, get stopped by the weather, see it co opted or up the ante !
What’s important is that we create something which is easily participated in, out of the weather and available to all that takes this from the merely symbolic towards a movement with teeth that allows the bulk of the population to flex it’s political and economic muscles .
A late day to work, paying our bill just at the cut off before late charges or a month of no payments or etc.
Evolve or die Occupy Wall Street .
Now (click the LS linked therein or the embedded video above):
Hmmm. Try contacting the union. If anyone knows union members, esp.
I’m thinking along the lines of the farmers who show up regularly at French protests.
Some 18 wheelers are industrial honeybee keepers who cart them around the country to pollenate crops. Those girls are not treated well, but that’s another story. It would be kool to get one of those loaded trucks to show up, take the straps & shrink wrap off the hives & start setting them up.
‘Fraid that’s right. You do not want to be face-to-face with a New York City cop with a heavy implement in your hands. I shudder at the very thought.
18 Wheelers could do a number on December 7th during the General Strike.
Now, that makes me smile. Those cops certainly deserve a stinging rebuke.
Is there going to be a general strike? I haven’t heard of it. (Not been online much for last week or so). Do you have a link?
Ah, yes. Honeybees are just the thing for cooperative urban agriculture.
We need a thread devoted entirely to brainstorming about how to push this to the next step !
Pardon my cynicism about general strikes when it requires most workers to agree. But is this the proverbial philosopher’s strike?
Honeybees are semidomesticated. They don’t sting much, and when they do, they lose their stinger & die about 4 hours later. But I think the beezzzz would get a bit out of sorts (they definitely have moods) with all the melee, so perhaps some would commit to be suicide stingers.
Tweeted to peeps! U bring more re pressure points in NYC & I distrib.
There’s a scene in this movie of bee keepers on roof of very urban neighborhood in Bronx. Changes your whole feeling about the environment there.
Also story about bee hives in some section of Brooklyn making red honey, as they are near some red dye producing plant. Uck. Poor girls.
Since Obama basically tried to lie us into war today, how many leading lights of the “left” will fall in line to support him in 2012?
Ironically, of all the GOP candidates Romney is the candidate most similar to Obama. He is a Massachusetts Liberal after all.
If we don’t break ranks with the two-party hustle in 2012, we are culpable.
Thanks. I don’t tweet.
That is being done in multiple general assemblies as well, between the times that they are defending their turf. Taking it to the next step is not an abstraction. It depends on where you are. Each local movement is involved in taking it to the next step. For some that means have the courage to meet face to face to plan to picket some event or in front of a bank. For others that means how to push the legal envelope to more forcefully assert the rights of free speech and assembly. For others that means serious discussion about how to include the homeless, hobos, and street people in their general assemblies. For others it’s what to do about the coming winter.
Interesting to think about the right to assemble in general. PTB have done their best to take away all the public space that might be used for that.
anyone know what is going on with clean up tomorrow. heard oWS offered to pay for it?
In other news Iranian leaders, furious over the Saudi intervention in Bahrain and what they call crimes against the Shiites of that country, have openly created centers to recruit volunteers for suicide bombings against Saudi Arabia’s interests worldwide. Several grand ayatollahs in Iran have issued a fatwa for Muslims to come to the aid of their Shiite brothers in Bahrain, who they claim are suffering horrific crimes from their government in collaboration with the Saudi armed forces.
Not sure what to make of it. seems strange this would come one day after what was obviously a govt made up plot that iran was trying to kill SA diplomat? All seems so strange. thoughts?
Rather than attempt a general strikie in one fell swoop , we could attempt a collective late day to work and augment it over time. O
Excuse my cut and pasting but I adressed this in a post several days ago :
Sympathy with the protesters on wall street is growing nation wide and as a result of the lack of clear specific demands and leaders , anyone with imagination , on either side of the political aisle is able to paint their own reasons why our oligarchs, wall street and their henchman in govenment have outlived their usefulness. This movement is gaining steam exponentially and yet the question remains , how can we involve those not yet engaged and keep these protests in the public eye .
Many around the country , with families and mortgages to pay, deep in credit debt, who now applaud the protesters can not make it to Wall Street or Washington DC but would still like to do more than merely sympathize .Without providing a viable way for the people to participate in these events, while these actions will undoubtedly raise public awareness and force a more serious dialogue about our real problems as a nation upon the MSM and our “Representatives ” in government, they will remain mostly symbolic , carried out by only a small segment of those who are in support of them.
In view of this appraisal I would like to advance the following proposal .
Begin to advocate and provide an avenue which will make those now on the sidelines engaged in a way that is not merely poetic but has the threat of some teeth in it through means involving little real effort or danger to working men and women , and is both universally available to most among the citizenry and more efficient than what is now going on in the streets.
Working men and women around the nation could be encouraged to go to work an hour late on a certain day collectively , en masse !
This is unlikely to put anyone among the 99% in any real danger of losing their livelihoods or homes but would be extremely empowering to the American population as a whole and allow them to become participants rather than spectators ! The simple fact of such a small act would be to forshadow a much larger possibility , the threat of a general strike nationwide which stops the wheels of industry and finance entirely . This would put those in the upper 1% on notice that the democracy is neither for sale or exclusively the property of their ilk and educate us all on who really holds the reins of power !
The threat of such a possibility would be a clear shot off the bow of the ship of state and involve the vast majority of Americans in our collective liberation .
We’ve been damn well culpable for quite some time. Looking good trying doesn’t provide an escape from culpability.
And again:
Not only is it hard to sustain something as it approaches a zenith but there remains another more obvious problem , the weather ! This event is now entering it’s third week and has been successful beyond most of our wildest dreams in gaining traction among the American populace , how many weeks shall we attempt to sustain such numbers before natural entropy slips in and the numbers begin to dwindle based on the inevitable burnout ? The weather in the northern tier of the US will turn sour within weeks as well and as a result those crowds actively participating will dwindle despite their best intentions , this is obvious.
Equally obvious is that the next step is an escalation away from what is largely a symbolic protest towards a real demonstration of political power . This should be done is such a way as not to endanger the people who are now under the yoke of credit debt OR the system on which they depend. A show of force nationwide which brings the majority into the fray and out of the weather will be necessary in order to move forward rather than see the momentum diminished .
Who is this “we” in your statement. That’s the rub. Unless you already have 10-20 million folks committed to strike with little possibility of replacing them with scabs, it does not work. And even then, it is unlikely to put the 1% on notice because they already are on notice. Why do you think they want to shut down Liberty Plaza and other occupation sites?
From Zinn: Workers’ strikes in the U.S. began in the 1820s & it took them a century to achieve much. Still gotta keep on keeping on.
Other variatins on this basic strategy are possible . What ever it is it must be supremely easy to be involved in and universally available .
Otherwise we are probably nearing the end of mass participation , which I still contend is the only way forward in light of the situation .
The more likely practical action will be to occupy empty buildings and provide shelter for the homeless. There is a lot of empty commercial real estate in the US, some even that must keep the utilities running to protect the value of the property. That makes an effective case about waste.
.
The we is both more than tens of thousands now directly engaged in 800 cities across the US and the many more who are not participating directly but that support the occupiers.
Re: Boston. . .
Verizon, OK. But how about protesting at Beacon Hill and City Hall? They’re the nexus of what goes on in Boston, no?
Occupy Birmingham (AL): Occupation of Financial District (videos)
That’s not enough people yet. There are roughly 240 million adults in the US.
With climate change and a predicted mass extinction event in the oceans unseen in human history within twenty years on the horizon , we don’t have a century to work our way up to this.
Also as economic conditions worsen and social unrest occurs in earnest we will come to better understand the reason why all our phones are bugged and the government has dispensed with Habeas Corpus while claiming the right to assassinate us without oversight.

You know when you read about revolutions in the past and how they killed in horrific ways those they saw as part of the old way it seems so removed from ones life. Then I turn on the TV and some news guy is just pushing more BS and lies, doing his bit to keep up the left vs right illusion, and when called upon banging the drum for war etc, And he does it all with a smug look on his face. I can understand why revenge is such a powerful driver and how the mob mentality can take over. I hope it doesn’t but I think we all need to be aware it is their lurking in us all, and we must work hard to not let it or those around us succumb to it. Not saying we are anyway near this happening, or that it will happen, just saying we need to be aware.

A new post will fade into oblivion over a few days but a place whose entire purpose is to bring good ideas to the forefront and people working on logistics to make them a reality would go a lot further.
I am not talking about something apart from the events of the last month but something which is grown directly from it, a continuance if you please.
Speaking personally, I don’t have a revenge gene. I went thru a tremendously difficult period, now nearly 25 years ago but one never forgets. I did not wish ill upon my tormentors then or since, just wished I could get rid of them sooner. (5 years of soap opera stereotypical will contest lawsuits after my husband’s tragic death.)
Point I’m trying to make is that human desire for revenge falls on the bell shaped curve like other human behaviors. I am very far out on the tail for those who have better things to occupy my time. While very much aware of my counterparts on the other end of the distribution. I call them “slight collectors.” You may have noticed some on the intertoobz.
You are absolutely right to warn of dangers of mob mentality, but I have been impressed so far with how much that has been absent in OWS. Gives me a little hope (TM).
I used to feel that way till I abandoned the hinayana.

After experiencing the “turning-about” in the deepest seat of consciousness, they(bodhisattva)will experience other Samadhis even to the highest, the Vajravimbopama, which belongs to the Tathagatas and their transformations. They will be able to enter into the realm of consciousness that lies beyond the consciousness of the mind-system, even the consciousness of Tathagatahood. They will become endowed with all the powers, psychic faculties, self-mastery, loving compassion, skillful means, and ability to enter into other Buddha-lands. Before they had attained self-realisation of Noble Wisdom they had been influenced by the self-interests of egoism, but after they attain self-realisation they will find themselves reacting spontaneously to the impulses of a great and compassionate heart endowed with skillful and boundless means and sincerely and wholly devoted to the emancipation of all beings.

That was the 1950s, nearly 60 years ago. I hadn’t even thought about it for that long. But you can’t imagine how easy it was to get onto the Thruway going in the wrong direction. It was built in sections, and inbetween the ones that were already open, you had to take Rte 5 or 20. When you came to the next “open” section of the Thruway, the on-ramps frequently gave no indication of east or west.

http://pajamasmedia.com/tatler/2011/10/11/occupy-l-a-speaker-violence-will-be-necessary-to-achieve-our-goals/
Pajamas Media? Pffft.
Freeman, I agree that people who can’t physically make it to protests should be able to do something to show solidarity, nothing seems to be taking though. I WILL go, but it will have to be on the weekend, and that’s just the way it is.
I work and so do a lot of people who should be able to do something at work. I don’t really like the idea of coming in late because as a practical matter for many of us it could mean putting our jobs at risk.
I suggested wearing green the other day in a blog. It’s a small thing, but easy and easy to spot from afar. Only works if it caught on among a lot of people.
I also agree with you that without something people can do to participate while working, or from wherever they have to be physically (lots of people have kids, elderlies to take care of, and so forth)—-its power will be limited. I think demonstrating is great but there has to be something to do for people who can’t get there and it needs to be something that’s visible and real in the offline world that makes a statement. Peacefully.
Hell I don’t know who they are. It just bothers me if someone’s out there saying this crap in the name of the OWS movement.
They’re just trying to start something. I doubt if he’ll emerge as a credible “spokesperson,” particularly since the movement has none. I wouldn’t worry to much.
Great sign!
Hey you! We’re heading out again this Saturday. We should get to Austin around noon. If you’re planning to head out let me know!
Will do. Am thinking about the Austin Friends of Traditional Music String Band Festival at Camp Ben McCulloch this weekend. I’ll let you know what I decide. I’ll probably figure it out tomorrow. Too tired now. I’m glad you’re going. Perhaps we’ll meet there.
Poor Victoria Jackson! She left SNL decades ago but never managed to stop playing the dumb blonde. And to think she was mother to Toonces The Driving Cat!
I’ve seen fake reports of violence against police for the last week or so in many different places. The most egregious? Pat Buchanan on The McLaughlin Group.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHRO9-M_LLU&feature=feed
If you can’t bear the whole thing, McLaughlin winds up his “issue one” question somewhere about 3:30 and by 4:30 Pat has a significant chain of lies strung together.
That’s a great idea cindy .
It is something that can bring an awareness into the work place as well as get the discussion going where people are in their daily lives .
Canadians, why not give it a try?
One dude likely speaking at the soap box. People can basically say whatever they want. Some may say things many disagree with. As far as I know, that’s not some direct action meeting, so nothing to see. Can’t force people out because they may give fodder for the right wing media.

I’m hearing more that it’s the capital?
Camp is at park on or adjacent to the Colorado State Capitol grounds.
Can someone report if ustream goes live again?
I’m watching this one:

LS Denver – Wow. They’re doing good so far at avoiding being a televised “mob”. It was very close to losing it.
And a Democratic governor follows in the path of several Democratic mayors.
So far, so good. But it is still early and there are not nearly enough viewers on their UStream.
Hearing someone on megaphone but can’t make it out.

I’m 99% sure ustream is prerecorded now. try refreshing to check.
I hear “mic check!” by the #OccupyDenver GA.

I saw the existence of that. Multiple camera people with different locations/shot angles. Good one!
They’re chanting “banks got bailed out, we got sold out” really loudly now.
crowd has really really grown, spilling over into the street now.
Did you see any of this? This is likely going to become and urban legend like the spitting on returning Vietnam veterans. It looked to me like there were protest monitors who were successfully holding people back from the doors.
lots of people out just to drive by slowly and honk in rhythm.
crowd cheering now. don’t know why.
I dunno. Pounding on a door isn’t that bad, and they were really mad on ustream. It might have happened.
From October2011.Org:
people are driving by just to honk in solidarity. Parking must be bad or something.
Crowds on denverpost livestream still growing. Probably 3 times as big as when I started watching.
Check out the live coverage at 9News right now.
denver post reporter:
Then they moved back twenty feet or so before the video I saw. The doors were recessed into the building by that much.
The issue for me is that the leaders/monitors, head of the line, whatever they were worked their butts off to make sure that the building was not threatened in any way. At least in the video that I saw. That work should not be misrepresented.
who’s that guy they’re interviewing?
I only watched the last couple of minutes, I think.
I haven’t heard the columnist’s name yet and the 9News didn’t mention again if they had at all. He gets around.
crowd still growing, people still driving by and honking. news9 must be way far away from the capital building. I think they’re at the campsite.

Activity at Seattle right now:
My computer’s crashing; too many streaming tabs open. on seattle ls, people are drumming and chanting as arrests are made. Like some bizarre religious ritual.
i really need to take denver off or I might be out for an hour. will you watch denver?
At #OccupyDenver …
The attorney up now doing a great job of schooling the 9News guy on http://www.9news.com/video/9newsonline.aspx .
Yes, go ahead. I’m still on it watching Denver. Thanks!
Strong First Nations presence in Seattle & indigenous pride. They might do things a bit differently just to under score a few points (e.g. broken treaties).
Mass arrests in seattle and the atmosphere is indescribable. drums going, people chanting “our park!”, dancing, screaming; religious ecstacy of martyrdom or something. Gives me chills in a good way. Never seen anything like this before.
LS down, but seconds before it went off the broadcaster promised to be right back.
My god, I hope that LS was recorded somewhere. It was just…I don’t know what to say.
Good!
Thousands of people watching seattle LS now (it’s back). Drumming and chanting and arrests still happening.
We just passed Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement).
LS seattle: chant “hell no, we won’t go”, with drums. Battery about to die again. they’re drumming on recycling bins. Police surrounding. now chant “this what democracy looks like”. Protesters laughing and smiling. LS narrator talking about how a lot of us are watching denver and seattle at the same time according to LS chat.
Sara Burnett, Jeremy P. Meyer and Tim Hoover, Denver Post: Tensions high as 11 p.m. deadline passes for Occupy Denver
Constructing a narrative. Were there provocateurs in the crowd who would not allow a disciplined mic check general assembly at the doors of the capitol?
LS camera folks asking people at the Sukkot tent to conserve their energy.
In seattle, people sitting in a circle with arms linked awaiting arrest, swaying, chanting “power to the people, hell yeah” while drums beat. Even the cops are laughing and smiling. Just unreal.
Things still kewl in Denver so far. 9News appears to have turned off their generator to conserve energy and cut to a camera angle on the GA from an position across the street at street level.
Seattle LS down.
If your computer can handle it, you’ve got to check out what’s happening in Seattle when their LS goes live again. It really can’t be put into words.
It’s back!
It’s off again.
I’m also watching Seattle.
Record Twitter traffic right now and the system is sputtering.

Wow. Hopefully the (seeming cool) denver media presence helped.
LS – seattle seems to be back up. Reporting 12 arrested.
The interviewees were great and kept putting the 9News guy in check.
unconfirmed:
Can’t tell from LS if it’s true or not.
Seattle folks won a big one tonight.
Seriously. Dude on LS just said when he was arrested, they immediately let him go. Like, no processing, nothing.
LS – Needs a hot spot. And they got it. This and the batteries make the difference in the ability to deliver on “The whole world is watching”
Seattle LS: everyone else who was arrested was just released, no processing.
Persistence and a good legal team begins to erode all the BS excuses for arrests. So either there is an exercise of raw power or the authorities have to back off the the public space.
LS – Seattle: The Parks guy moved his own funds from BoA to a credit union.
Another libertarian on Seattle LS. “End the fed.”
What a weird alliance.
In Denver …
Waiting for clarification (seems as though the unmarked white surveillance van is still around):
Watching the aerial live cam.
Seattle pizza chat making me hungry for a deep dish.
Anyone still checking in on Denver? Was that a win, too?
Crosspost!
Oh, goodnight Seattle people! I actually have tears in my eyes.
More watches continue (my bold) …
The litmus test of the alliance seems to be dislike of the legal status of corporations as persons. Some libertarians see a government grant of limited liability as unconstitutional interference in the economy. One can make arguments about the Fed, because it is neither private nor public, both central bank and manipulator of the money supply.
Did something go down in San Diego? I saw a few references fly by on the livestream chats.
Most libertarians, IME, don’t really know what they believe outside of the stuff that FDL progressives agree with. Besides “End the fed”. And even then, they’re easily adaptable to “nationalize the fed” positions. Very few libertarians want corporations to have the same civil rights as people. Also, the ones that see stop lights, etc as tyranny are a small minority.
Most are young progressives in the forming, I think. I thought I was a libertarian till I learned a bit more about the Whole Libertarian Enchilada. It was really weird going from “Yeah! Imma libertarian!” to “Wait. Norway’s actually cool. I’m actually a leftie who just likes civil rights, I guess.”

Here’s the order to disperse.
What’s going here at http://www.9news.com/video/9newsonline.aspx ?
I think that when it’s daytime in both Europe and Asia that the Twitter gets overloaded by 2/3 of the world’s users being on at the same time.
Hmmm … Twitter’s back and there have been updates for Denver:
Denver LS – another order from the state patrol to disperse

9news guy saying this is a heavily documented event with lives streams, cell phones, private video cameras. Majority wants a peaceful protest. So far no arrests. Riot police slowly walking through crowd. At least a couple hundred observers.
Denver 9NEWS – so far no arrests
On http://www.9news.com/video/9newsonline.aspx :
No arrests, seizing property. My bold:
Police moving from tent to tent seizing property.
WTF
Police announced they’d do that (confiscate property at the final call to disperse).
On http://www.9news.com/video/9newsonline.aspx :
One demonstrator says to police, “Please don’t take the food.”
Mic Check.
Denver – Shame, Shame, Shame, Shame
Someone is getting arrested.
On http://www.9news.com/video/9newsonline.aspx :
9News guy comments that the demonstrators are not having a clash with police over any confiscation of property. There have been some arrests. Attorneys on the ground and legal observers. Demonstrators have written phone # on their bodies in case of arrest.
Denver 9NEWS reporter is amazed that there has not been violent resistance to the seizing of property.
Chant: This is what a police state looks like.

Demonstrators hold up peace signs while police disassemble tents and confiscate property inside the tents.

I guess even general assembly rules are meant to be broken. Or the reporter is lying.
On http://www.9news.com/video/9newsonline.aspx :
9News guy, Jeremy Hohola, says that a small minority of demonstrators smoked some marijuana and drank some beer.
Some demonstrators locked arm in arm by the medical tent. Earlier, demonstrators in orange vests appear to be security and removed an intoxicated man who was disorderly.
Demonstrators chanting to the police, “You are one of the 99 Percent.”

9News Jeremy Hohola surprised that there are no violent encounters and no arrests.
Bloomberg’s plan was to smash them, until he saw the huge turnout.
The tweet below came into #ows about 40 minutes ago.

“The rift between the new left and the old left is being healed this minute” unions at #ows
It sounds as though the unions arrived and surrounded the protesters. If the police had wanted to make arrests it sounds as though they would have had to go through the Teamsters, UAW, Nurses, ….. first. Iraq and Afghanistan veterans were also involved. This morning was a huge victory, because it was a test of the resolve and the discipline of the protesters. They showed their mettle at night facing the prospect of the NYPD.
