A whole lot happened today on the occupation front. Anywhere between 60,000 and half a million people gathered in Madrid:
According to the Guardian, around three thousand protesters assembled in London.
(Image via @HeardinLondon)
In Germany, thousands protested in Berlin.
(via @thinkprogress via @nytimes)
Thousands more in Chile today:
(via @15MayRevolution)
…and Australia
…and Seoul, South Korea:
(via @theEunchong)
In the US, there were marches and gatherings in Milwaukee:
And Vegas…
And of course there was activism in NY today, like this small group that tried to close their bank accounts:
And the massive gathering of tens of thousands at Time Square.
Could today have been the largest global protest to ever happen in the history of the world?

Just now, this tweet from Josh Harkinson, of Mother Jones:
Oh shit. I should be there but I cannot get back down there tonight.
Thanks all for keeping the live blog updated by posting to the comments thread. It is great to be reporting with you & athena1 thanks for the roundup post.

Looks like they decided that they didn’t have the numbers to occupy Washington Square Park tonight.
This tweet, from Jamie Kilstein, makes it sound like they will try again tomorrow night:
picking up that Seattle may get busted again in 1 hour 5 mins
Thank you, Kevin!
There’s a standoff right now in Chicago:
Ustream has live video.
Watching that ustream now….
Julian Assange showed up at the London protest today in the Guy Fawkes mask, was forced to remove it by police. Later spoke to the crowd. Pictures: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2049486/Global-protests-Occupy-London-Stock-Exchange-takes-City.html

Arrests again in #occupydenver
11:43 pm in Chicago and while I’m not downtown to see what’s actually happening, I wanted to note that I just came from Yahoo where they have front-paged a Chicago Tribune story about the protests moving to Grant Park. The story is credited to Dawn Rhodes, Tribune Reporter, has a dateline of 11:06 pm and is a fairly positive piece on the protestors, with many positive quotes from the protestors themselves. The article notes the 11:00 pm curfew, which is a city-wide standard for parks but rarely enforced. The article ends with these lines:
“If police tell the protesters to move, “We’ll see what happens,” Delaney said.
By 10:30 p.m. the crowd was down to about 500 people in the area, with some two dozens tents set up.”

Ok I had been posting some last minute things about NYC and Chicago on the previous blog post and am too beat to copy it over here. Hope everybody stay safe. I work all day on Sunday so probably I won’t be able to contribute any till past 11pm Eastern Time.

See you tomorrow night, ny40. Sleep well.

In Seattle, protesters have occupied Westlake Plaza and set up over a hundred tents. Here’s some pictures from earlier today, taken by Paul Constant, of people protesting and setting up their tents.
Is the volume on this LS not working for anyone else?
http://www.ustream.tv/channel/occupychi
That’s a really nice photogallery.
Chicago ls down?
It was silent until a few minutes ago. Now I have audio.
http://twitpic.com/712awr
Is it still working for you?
I have video and audio, but it’s not live anymore. Even time I load it, I see the same video re-start.
It’s back on, live. And now it’s gone again.
on and off for me too. I keep getting ads, as well.
LS working again. They’re talking about forming a human chain.
From the livestream:
People’s mic starting up now. There’s a proposal to form a human chain, for people willing to get arrested.
They’re cheering for everyone watching the livestream while we’re cheering for them from afar.
Chi LS: “I don’t think there are enough paddy wagons here to arrest this big of a crowd.”
The chicago stream is on the glovalrevolution channel now.
Micah Uetricht posted a picture of the human chain in Chicago, “staring down cops.”
Thanks for the update and photos.
While things get tense in Chicago, there’s some potentially good news from Seattle:
I’m back. My computer took a dump. Livestream makes it do that sometimes.
Arrests happening in Chicago now, per LS.
I had to close down Firefox and restart everything. Flash leaks like a sieve, and it ran my Firefox memory usage up near 1GB.
I lost the livestream at Ustream (edit: it’s running again… and now it’s not… and now it’s no longer live, just pre-recorded video). There’s also a livestream at justin.tv that’s running.
The justin one never works for me. Weird.
Here’s a cool Chi photogallery:
http://drazninphotography.blogspot.com/2011/10/occupy-chicagocampout-chicago.html
I wonder what the purpose of the horses is? I mean, really.
To push the protesters around and to intimidate them. Also, it elevates the officers, giving them a good view of what’s going on in the crowd.
Thanks for the link to the gallery. FWIW, the justin.tv stream is down now, too. But Ustream was back up briefly (now it’s out again).
I’m turning in for the night. Have a goodnight athena1. Thanks for the roundup and the updates.
Tonight’s been horse night. Sigh.
justinTV is actually pre-recorded. You can ff to the end and see that it’s not actually live. Just figured that out when it worked for a minute.
Goodnight, SE.
athena!,
I left two comments at the end of the last post and you might find them interesting to contemplate.
Thanks for all your hard work on this!!!
Thank you Kevin!!!
Switch to Chrome and install Ad-block and other privacy extensions (Google likes to track and share, among other sites). I solely used Firefox since the beginning until about a year after Chrome was released. Chrome is better with memory management and makes a load of difference, especially if you’re like me and run many tabs simultaneously. I want Firefox to win since they’re the open-source project, but I think using another browser will put pressure on them to resolve these problems, which people have been frustrated by for years now.
Does anyone else wonder if the some government agency sent in professional agitators to tarnish the occupiers in Rome? That handful of thugs lighting up cars and brawling seems suspiciously agitprop.
Who knows? I doubt it, but there are certainly infiltrators who dress similar, though I imagine their motive is to arrest, or provoke then arrest, not to do illegal things. The culture of protest in that region is different than the US and this is quite common. The black bloc actions in the US 10 years ago pale in comparison.
If you’re wondering what their motives may be, it varies. Some may just like the action (or if extended long enough, use the opportunity to loot as happened in England recently), others may feel the peaceful marches alone are not enough to pressure the people at the top or to create an atmosphere of serious change, others want to express their hatred of the institutions that have screwed them. Instead of withdrawing their bank accounts from a big bank, which apparently people aren’t allowed to do in the US in mass (a way to make a statement), maybe they don’t have an account and decide to show what they think of that bank chain by attacking a branch of it. That’s Italy though, so it’s pointless for us to get in the debate of tactics when nothing remotely like that is happening in the US.
Firefox has much better implementation of AdblockPlus than Chrome.
Well, his/her complaint is about memory (mis-)management and it’s well known Firefox is behind Chrome in this area. If you have a ton of RAM, not an issue, but with 1-2GB running multiple sites using Flash in different tabs, it is. I mentioned Adblock because it can help eliminate the Flash ads on pages that waste memory and privacy extensions because Chrome is used by Google in a similar way it uses Google search, though websites still track and share information through other browsers.
These protesters in Madrid know why they’re protesting . The dictator who controlled their nation only left a few decades ago .
Our are yet to show their true colors to those within the nations borders.

Good morning. I just caught up yesterday’s liveblog with some overnight tweet information.
Occupy Columbia SC is having their general assembly. The livestream is up.
Occupy Raleigh made it through the night after 23 arrests. The RPD is pulling the usual harassment tactics.

Good morning, TD. Thanks to you, athena1, mzchief, ysd, ny40, et al, for the marvelous job you’ve all been doing while the rest of us sleep. I’m at my limit just trying to read it all, can’t imagine how you are managing to accumulate and post it all. Hugs and gratitude to all of you.

My husband and I ‘Occupied Mancos, CO’, population 800, for a while yesterday. ;o) It was great fun.
Love NYC & Madrid, but it’s the smaller actions that really get to me!!
You can leave me off that list of the night crew. I caught up on sleep last night.
‘Twasn’t me updating…I just rolled out of bed and started reading about events last night.
We expect a “day of rest” for #occupy today, correct?
The little country that could:
Occupy Auckland has begun
Saturday, 15 October 2011, 9:55 pm
Press Release: Occupy Auckland
15th October 2011, 8pm
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Press release: Occupy Auckland
Occupy Auckland has begun
2,000 supporters of Occupy Auckland marched up Queen Street to Aotea Square today.
Eighty of the protesters have set up a dozen tents for the night.
Protests were also held today in New Plymouth, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and Invercargill.
The New Zealand occupations are the first of 1,600 events planned around the world today, inspired by Occupy Wall Street.
Alex Port, a university student who is camping for the night, said the group’s decision making process was as much the message as people and planet before profit.
“Our general assembly involved 2,000 people from all walks of life and made decisions by consensus without a hitch,” she said. “Decisions included giving unanimous support to Occupy Wall Street and establishing the occupation.”
Mrs Port says not all supporters could join the occupation for the night.
“Supporters and the curious are welcome to join for an hour, day, night or longer,” she said.
Protesters are now setting up groups to deal with the occupation including security, food, sanitation and the internet connection used to send the groups press release.
The next general assembly will start tomorrow at 4:30pm. http://www.occupyauckland.org/

I wish I could see this, but I’m not on FB and never will be, so I’m only able to see things people make public. I still think the fact that Occupy has come to such a small, out-of-the-way place as Boaz AL, means that it is everywhere. And I’m very glad of that!
OWSter GLOBALIZATION!
Well, the sentiment is pretty much everywhere but folks have to overcome the fear of their neighbors’ marginalizing them. There is strength in numbers and FB is way for high-schoolers and others to build numbers without some of the neighbors knowing until it happens.
;o) We were 2, LOL, in Mancos. Fun yelling to a few supporters in cars: ‘Occupy Mancos!!!’
Where are the pics?
Did you have signs? What did they say? Did folks honk at you or flip you off? What was the honk-to-flipoff ratio?
Details.
Everybody deserves a night off occasionally. That goes for ysd as well. My note of gratitude was meant to encompass all your ongoing contributions.
Lol. Honk to flip-off ratio.
As a South Carolina native, I can’t get enough of this beautiful sight:
Occupy Columbia livestream
This morning at their general assembly, a Tea Party guy from Fort Walton Beach (in town visiting) was pimping the Tea Party during his time in the stack. He tried to throw them off track by wanting to get them to discuss his ideas right then; he had to leave to “go to church”. They just went to the next speaker in the stack.
Later, the facilitator was asking how they could be prevented from considering multiple times the same issue when nothing about it had changed. The issue was how to maintain the agenda (really it was for an agenda committee-don’t see any problem with that, do you?). They handled it.
Now there are at least a dozen waving signs and getting honks of support.
The livestream functions well. And at battery change time, they run RT stories; strange that in SC.
Well watching the Columbia SC livestream last night, it was n to 0. And 16-wheelers love them.
Gov. Perdue must have left a message for the DoA head. Local news media covered the protests and the arrests. There was a large crowd during the day, and 50 stayed to occupy, with 23 arrested. Most of the folks who stayed during the night had to stand on the sidewalk. (based on previous tweets)
LOL! A couple folks took pics, but they were touristas, two from my old stomping grounds in Boulder. A few here and there stood with us and yakked, one loud cowboy who wants to run for Prez in 2016, and was a bit afraid that photos with us might come back to haunt him. ;o)
We told him au contraire!, of course….
Signs said:

I wrote a bit of it up for another site I’m sharing, but they are all long-time friends. I kinda wanted to write it up here, but me on crutches and some hilarity about my pride with all that figured in fairly large, and I’m kinda shy of saying all that here. I even yelled at my friends over yonder that if they didn’t laugh with me, there would be grave consequences. (Haven’t heard a word yet, so…I may have to haunt them when I’m dead…) ;o)
I went earlier in the week by myself; my hippie activist genes just kicked in…it was horrid. Everyone looked away, like mebbe the sign said:
One honk that day, frickin’ local cop wouldn’t even smile at me; sheesh.
Waaaay more waves, honks and visitors yesterday; either me ‘oosband made the big dif, or the day of the week…
Oh: and no flip-offs!
Good report. The honks and no flip-offs seems to be the case where there are no 1% or their toadies around.
There was a lady in Atlanta, ready to be arrested one night last week when the City was trying to evict them, interviewed on the livestream. One of the things she wanted to make clear in her finest North Georgia accent was that she had cleared her decision to get arrested with her husband and that he supported her. She just wanted all of her friends to know that. Somehow with some people it seems to make a difference in how protesting women are viewed.
Occupy Raleigh – Day 2
19 arrested last night in Sacramento including Cindy Sheehan, a guy in a wheelchair who they ultimately had to process at the park because they didn’t have wagons with wheelchair accessibility, and a mother who was with her daughter and told her that she was teaching her that she shouldn’t be silent.

For this, yes; anti-war rallies we did here would really glean the rage from some people; it’s a very redneck county.
We have to make clear on the ground that this is NOT a left-right movement.
One in Cortez, we were about 25 with our babbies in strollers and slings; the VFW organized over 400 screamers to surround us. Very frightening shit; no one was hurt in the end, but it taught me never to take our kids again.
(And really, I’d been teasing that my husband’s mojo or something elicited more positive reactions.)
Does anyone have a qualified and quantifiable answer to the question of if yesterday might possibly have been the largest global protest in the history of the world?

The anti-war protests were much larger in the lead-up to the invasion of Iraq. According to a BBC report from February 17, 2003, “Between six and 10 million people are thought to have marched in up to 60 countries over the weekend – the largest demonstrations of their kind since the Vietnam War.” The numbers for some of the cities is astounding:
• Barcelona – 1.3 million according to police
• London – 750,000 according to police, 2 million according to organizers
• Rome – 650,000 according to police (“not counting those protesters unable to reach the rally venue”), 3 million according to organizers

IIRC the anti-war protests in London before the Iraq war drew multiple millions in London alone. Perhaps #occupy had the most cities involved with lower numbers of participants?

IT DEFINITELY WAS NOT!!! Which is why none of the corporate media has seen fit to cover it today. But, did you know there is a baby missing somewhere in the west? And another one dead on a cruise ship. Just watched CNN’s “Top Stories” segment. The silence on the protests was deafening. I think I’ll just continue to believe my lying eyes, as informed by the coverage here at FDL.
Jeeze. I just caught a few minutes of CNN talking about #occupy and, of course, the consensus was that the activists have a scattered message free from any type of demand that will translate into votes.
It’s like the people on the news haven’t even been watching #occupy over the last month. Their ignorance of every aspect of #occupy is astounding.
Their ignorance is astounding. period
The rest of CNN talk is about the freaking 9-9-9 “plan”. Shouldn’t 9-9-9 just be dismissed and mocked for it’s stupidity and hypocricy for raising taxes on most? It’s a joke what passes for serious discourse in this country.
