What’s this young woman’s story?
I am 23 years old and an aspiring vocalist. I’m too afraid to go to college, because I don’t know if I can handle being that far in debt when my chosen major would be in such a difficult field to get employed.
I have worked an entry level job for a major corporation for four years. It is the only job that I can get in my area that pays me enough to get by, due to my limited work experience. The CEO of my company made more than $23,000,000 last year, over twice what he made the year before, while we on the bottom had our hours cut due to “low sales”.
I live with my best friend and her fiance so that we can afford our adequate apartment, and am constantly having to borrow money from my parents.
Both of my credit cards are maxed out, and it’s starting to affect my credit. I can’t even afford the $260 it would take to visit my dying grandmother in hospice.
I am one of the lucky ones.

And you know the kicker here? She IS one of the lucky ones.
How fucking sad and pathetic is this country when someone living less than paycheck to paycheck and killing their credit at 23 years old just to survive is consider to be better off than a lot of others?
America, Fuck Yeah!
And before our neighborhood troglodytes come in here and spout bullshit about her being an aspiring ‘vocalist’ and try to convince us that she should choose another major that has more real world application, remember that NOBODY can afford to go to college right now. No matter the major.
looks like we’ll have some added muscle on Sunday
you bet your ass we’ll be there !
We’re SOOOOO effing there.
Sign making party? I’ve got markers and poster board….
Yes !
of course I’m working every night through Friday – but we’ll figure it out
Nothing wrong with right now. I can come get you.
have about an hour of ‘chores’ will text you
What an awesome aspiration she has. It’s completely non-violent and, unless she’s running around do fundraisers for folks like Mitt Romney (which I really doubt), her activities wouldn’t feed the military-industrial-congressional complex. Go red-headed 99% gal!
The number of negative remarks about #occupy and the 99% in almost every article I’ve read on them (online newspapers, etc) is astonishing and enough to make me despair, until I realized it means the paid trolls are out in force so we are making the 1% start to pay attention. Honestly, an article about occupyDetroit in a Detroit newspaper had almost instantly over 200 comments, all but two or three were highly angry negative comments yesterday. Amazing.
Yes, I’m seeing the same thing in my locality. A LOT of intense negativity about the local Occupy site/movement/people, but most of it b.s. lies, esp the DIRTY effen hippie radical Marxist type… as in: no real basis in reality but it gins up the rage of the Stockholm Syndrome enablers in the 99%.
It does make me believe that the upper 1% must be somewhat nervous if they’ve got their shills/mouthpieces/whores/trolls out in *force* whipping up a FRENZY of lies & spewing hatred towards the Occupy movement.
First they ignore you, then they fight you… yadda yadda…
I don’t know of any recent college grads who are not in a similar situation. The reason so many young adults stayed on their parents health insurance is because it was their only choice. For O to tout the fact that Obamacare has helped a million young people have health insurance in this way is just another example of how D.C. and Wall Street don’t get it. This car that Obama says he pulled out of the ditch is going to explode in a fiery ball of flame and they are tinkering with the cigarette lighter.
Here’s one arguing that free pizza wasn’t enough for the neo-egalitarians redistributors.

I agree, Kris. We’ve seen that meme before, and how! IF ONLY this foolish silly slacker girl just got a “real” degree, why then: poof! ALL of her problems would be solved.
The main point I take from her story, though, is that the 1% CEO made $23million last year, whilst the lowest ranks got their hours cut.
This is what makes my blood boil. This, of course, has gone on for FOUR decades now. Upper crust mgmt getting INSANELY ridiculous “salaries,” whilst the *lower orders* get their hours/pay cut. And then the Stockholm syndrone enablers in 99% line up to hurl stones at the “slackers” who simply “aren’t working hard enough.” Ptoui!
Double ptoui!
Consider a job in the Security Industry?

I hope OWS will put out a statement specific towards support of our postal workers. The changes in the works will not result in job retention.
If you count the severely underemployed (i.e. masters in business admin working as bank teller part time no benefits) and the unemployed who have given up looking, and the unemployed who are 99ers, and the unemployed that are still receiving UI benefits we are in a Depression RIGHT NOW. Challenger,Gray and Merry Christmas are predicting many more layoffs this holiday season so I have one question for the 1%ers, WTF?
I’m always amazed at the disconnect from reality represented by executive salaries in the U.S. What kind of lies did the CEO and the Board tell themselves to justify $23 million dollars in compensation in a company whose sales were down?
Of course there is the additional question of how anyone can justify making $23 million dollars in the first place. What possible use could the CEO have for that much money piled on top of his/her previous year’s compensation which was probably also an eight-digit figure. It’s unimaginable that he/she could possibly spend it all.
There’s a word for this kind of excess – avarice, traditionally one of the seven deadly sins.
How about these “Job Creators” only get paid per the amount of jobs they create in the U.S.? The truth is right now most of them are being rewarded for the amount of jobs they have eliminated in the U.S.
Agreed. Also, in the case of banks executives compensation should be tied to how well they protected the savings of their customers. If that were the case a lot of Wall Street execs would have had negative income for the past three years.
What exactly is she complaining about?
She is getting paid in line with her skills (which hapen to be next to nothing) and in reality is making a better living then she would as a “vocalist”. Whose fault is it that she doesn’t want to go to college? Not the 1%ers. Instead she wants to piss and moan that someone who probably has at least one advanced degree and probably 30 years of work experience doesn’t deserve to make more than she does? She needs to pull her head from her ass.
Thank you for this.
I just read mattreichel’s diary “Occupy Movement Solidarity: Where are the Professors?” I think that diary is the bookend to this one. These really are the 99%, the lost potential, our creative children. Will we ever hear this lovely young person’s voice in concert? Or any of the many others she represents?
Burdened by debt, in a country that no longer cares, that takes out the pepper spray and the plastic nets and the horses against peaceful people telling us this is unjust. That beats the defenseless and says how dare they march and occupy – it’s costing us, the taxpayers money!
While the wars go on and the dollars flow upstream.
What worries me most about the coming Great Depression is that in the first one I don’t think most rich people were uneducated, this current crop of mega wealthy seem severely uneducated. They will foul their own nest and I’m not sure the J.P. Morgan and Rockefellers would. I really see OWS as our only hope.
p.s. Backeast proves my point
I cannot begin to tell you how many assumptions you’ve made here – how much does a vocalist make? And how do you know how much this girl makes? How do you know the CEO has an advanced degree and 30 years experience? (many CEOs I know have NO post-bachelor degree) The gist of her letter is that the CEO’s pay doubled to an astronomical $23 million while the lower level employees all had their hours cut. There is no way anyone could call that salary increase and salary amount justified when the company’s sales were down. Now, I’m done feeding you, troll.
I am 30 years old. I went to a four year state university in order to save money rather than going to a more prestigious private institution. To pay for tuition I worked full time (40 hours a week)and maintained a strong grade point average while graduating with no debt.
After working for 5 years I purchased a 2 bedroom/2 bathroom condo downtown in a major U.S. city. Four months later I was laid off. Rather than sit and pity myself I moved 2/3rds of the way across the country to take a new job while finding a renter for my new apartment. I now married and am enrolled in grad school while continuing to work full time. I just bought a new season pass for the local ski hill and will be looking to upgrade my SUV (its 4 years old) in the next couple of months. Spring may bring me a membership to one of the local country clubs.
Our voices will be heard! We are the 99%
I call bullshit, BackEast. This comment is almost exactly the same comment I’ve read at least a dozen times on all sorts of sites, but always in the comments after an #occupy article. This is simply a troll talking point. Why would anyone move 2/3rds of the way across country merely to become a troll?
Did you know there is an area where I can review all your comments, back to when you joined in July?
I think we should refer and address these trolls as “Jeeves”
Bullshit in spades, Jackass.
BackEast/HeadWest always says dumb b.s. like this. Ignore him/her. And his last post is a *story.* Not true and not even amusing.
The fact that you would even want a membership to a country club places you firmly in the 1%wannabe category. You may get into the country club, but the real 1% club? They won’t let you in, of that I’m certain. And I don’t want you in my 99%.
Why sully a fine name like Jeeves? I prefer “creeps”, it’s much more fitting.
Hey, I was chastised for feeding this troll once and I had to promise never to do it again. I do, however; have a similar story…I was born at a very early age and into an impoverished environment as well. The butler was poor, the maid was poor, and the gardeners were dirt poor.
It’s a very sad commentary on the state of affairs in our country when you have to make such a pre-emptive statement. If I had any money, I’d be willing to bet that this girl is much more talented than anyone you have ever seen or ever will see on a “talent” oriented reality tv show.
I work as a musician for musical theater in Chicago and I know SO many talented actors and singers who are slaving away during the day (for slae wages) so they can pursue their dreams at night, rehearsing in cold theaters for little to no pay. And I’ve been fortunate enough to see several of them break out in major ways to gigs like national tours, shows at big-time theaters in other states like Florida, and I even know one girl who will be starring on Broadway very soon. So I can feel the pain of the girl who just wants to study her craft and express herself through singing. It IS a respectable profession and anyone who thinks otherwise is a holdover from the pre-vaudeville era when “entertainers” were looked down on in society. The world needs more art!
What gets me about these types is how isolated and asocial they come off. I am somebody who works hard and live a comfortable life, but have friends and family who also worked hard and played by the rules and are in pretty dire straits these days. Do these people not have families or friends?
Its a uniquely American (lack of) mentality where musicians are looked upon as people “who should get a real job”.
The trolls, conservatives, and otherwise rigid assholes have NO understanding of the arts. Being a vocalist, fine artist, writer, or musician is hard work and is greatly needed in this pitiful culture of ours. There is little understanding of the dedication it takes to perfect a talent. Books don’t write themselves. Paintings don’t just jump on the canvas. Why are these people so against what makes our world a better place? Could it be because they have their heads’ up their own patoots? That is, if they can find their own patoots.
The arts for only for the elite. The peasants just don’t understand that. s/
People who want to get a job are willing to move to where the jobs are. Others just sit around on their hands and whine that there are no jobs available. For me that was to NY.
You’re right, my story was B.S., my 4runner is actually an ’06, its yikes 5 years old…..
Truth is most people are doing absolutely fine. Can things be better? of course they can, things can always be better but don’t include most of us that continue to work hard as part of the “99%” which seems to be comprised of professional agitators and and delinquents.
noone has a problem with the arts. People have a problem that some artists seem to think they are entitled to the same lifestyle as doctors, lawyers, and bankers. Those that have sacrificed years of their earning lives for advanced degrees.
Bullshit! Since I am an artist (and used to be married to a doctor), I know what I am talking about. None of my artist or writer friends ever had that expectation and many of them are very successful. Where are you getting your information?
Reading comprehension honey. I said some artists. You apparently aren’t one of them. Good on you.
Artists deserve the pay of doctors and lawyers (who, by the by, give up those “earning” years so they can earn 10X as much as they would without the JD or PhD – dumb argument). You certainly are hung up on advanced degrees, aren’t you? My sister was brilliant – PhD by 26 from Cornell – this was decades before women regularly got PhDs. She barely eked out a living as a college professor, had to rely on scholarships to get her kids through college. When it came to paying expenses, her advanced degree wasn’t much help.
Truth is most people are fine? Oh, yeah. We are all just great. That’s why #occupy exists because we are all sooo just fine. Moron.
I apologize FDLers. I will stop feeding him now.
http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2011/10/federal-reserve-board-rife-with-conflict-of-interest-gao-report/
“The makeup of the Federal Reserve’s board of directors poses a conflict of interest and there is concern that several financial firms and corporations could have reaped monetary benefits from their executives’ close ties to the Fed, according to a new report released today by the Government Accountability Office.”
Thomas Jefferson
“If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them will deprive the people of all property until their children wake up homeless on the continent their Fathers conquered…I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies… The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs.”
Variations:
“If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them will deprive the people of all property until their children wake up homeless on the continent their Fathers conquered.”
“I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies…”
“The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs.”
So what is it that the politicians and Wall Street do not understand, that the American people do understand?
Get over yourself. Artists earn the living that we as a society deem they are worth. That means for most of them it isn’t much. You are suggesting that I could sit at home and paint portraits on my walls with dog shit and you think that somehow entitles me to the lifestyle of a doctor or lawyer? People earn a living that is commensurate with what their value to society is. Almost anyone can be a artist hence most of them barely eek out a living. Not everyone can be head of a fortune 500 corporation, hence why they make millions. If everyone could hit like Albert Pujols would baseball players be getting $10 million a dollar deals? No. People choose their careers and fully know the risks going into them. If it doesn’t work out for them they can blame themselves, not the “1%”.
Scatological issues much?
“Truth is most people are doing absolutely fine. Can things be better? of course they can, things can always be better but don’t include most of us that continue to work hard as part of the “99%” which seems to be comprised of professional agitators and and delinquents.”
Sounds like the same thing the slave owner said about the Abolitionist! Agitators? Delinquents? Wall Street. traitors like slave-owners who put business interest before nation! To preserve a way of life predicated on exploitation of life! Call it corporate sodomy!
Quit feeding the trolls, please.
Not even close to the same thing. Nice Try. Most people at occupy are simply board and looking to stire up trouble. In reality, the real 99% are either working or out looking for a job. Not everyone has time to sit around in a park and shoot heroin.
“People earn a living that is commensurate with what their value to society is.”
Wow. That line is so stupid you almost got me to continue to feed you!
eke out, bucko, not EEK!!!!
Is that what you do when you run out of arguments? criticize spelling and grammar? Must be an unemployed English teacher.
This troll must belong to the Tea Party – it’s “bored” not “board” – it’s “stir up” not “stire up” – bucko.
I’ll feed trolls well. Then sit idle when they are choking, just as Wall Street has choked America, and sat on their hands with their asses?
You’re really grasping at straws now.
Also look for Headed West and other names like that.
But I thought folks like you were complaining about the skills people need for their jobs.
One of those skills is actually being able to write and speak proper English, with correct grammar and spelling and all that.
You were born at a very early age? Like minus 6 months?
Different jobs have different skill requirements. Is that too hard for you to understand. Don’t answer that.
These Jefferson quotes are largely irrelevant to today. He was right about private banks and currency. For much of the 19th century, the money system was largely private. Individual banks issued notes of varying reliability, with limited geographic acceptance. And the national and international monetary system was based on gold, an entirely private and stateless standard. But this description hasn’t been true for almost a century. And in recent decades the picture has changed dramatically.
When the US went off the gold standard in 1971, the rules of the game of monetary policy were profoundly altered. No longer tied to a tangible hoard of gold bars in Fort Knox and elsewhere, dollars lost any material existence and became nothing more than numbers on a spreadsheet controlled by the Federal Reserve and the US Treasury.
(These new understandings and more have been developed by Modern Monetary Theory [MMT]. A solid grounding in MMT may be gained by going to http://moslereconomics.com/)
The largely public institution, the Federal Reserve, has as its primary responsibility to prevent too much inflation or deflation.
Don’t feed this troll, who is a professional agitator who has enough time on his/her hands to come here spouting crap to rile up the readers.
Booogus.
Says the same stupid stuff endlessly, and most of it is a direct transcript from Rush Limbaugh.
Pay no attention. If the troll is here, it’s because the troll is agitated. Maybe the troll needs a heroin fix? Unsure…
“The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs.”
In effect this happened when the Fed, a public insitution, was created.
True, different jobs have different skill sets.
Given your shown skills here, you are probably one hell of a fine ditch digger as your reasoning and logic and reading comprehension skills are just a bit lacking.
Especially since you have shown your lack of grammar and English comprehension
“Is that too hard for you to understand.” This needed a question mark.
RoyalOak, are there any sites that OccupyDetroit is using particularly? I’m in Detroit and can’t get out (disabled) but would sure love to keep track and send a bit of money over. Also I have friends who need to have info laid in their laps.
I’m fairly certain BackEast is a paid troll. Pointless to play–he/she just gets more money for responses.
What does it say on facebook for Sunday? I’m not on facebook.
poosh – OccupyDetroit is on Facebook and here
http://www.occupy-detroit.us/
i’m old, they have fucked people all my adult lifetime, so let me rephrase with my own words……..fuck you you fucking fucks
