It is indicative of how the movement has evolved and strengthened. Occupy Wall Street has ordered 27 military tents and, as most of the media is reporting, they are being setup in Liberty Square (Zuccotti Park) so that Occupy Wall Street can remain in the park through the winter.
Based on the photos, it looks like they are purchasing “Rapid Deployable Shelters” (RDS). The specifications do not list what type of temperatures the tent can withstand during winter but they do indicate the tent can hold 10 pounds of snow per square foot.
Not only are these shelters expected to help prevent hypothermia, but they will help create “safe havens” for women, who increasingly fear men that are lurking in the camp waiting for an opportunity to touch them sexually. In personal tents, it is very easy to violate someone. In a military tent, anyone trying to cop a feel is sure to be wary of the fact that any person could walk into the tent at any time.
That Occupy Wall Street was able to construct a few military tents overnight is remarkable. When the medical tent in the camp went up, I noted how tarps had provoked forceful arrests by the NYPD of occupiers. They would not have even dared to try and erect tents because that would have been stopped instantly. But now the occupiers have great power and leverage and can civilly disobey codes and guidelines in the park. They know that if the NYPD or city tried to shut them down for putting up the tents thousands of people would be down at Liberty Square instantly to provide support.
It may be near impossible for other occupations to achieve what Occupy Wall Street has achieved. Each occupation must strive for the kind of invincibility that the Liberty Square occupation now enjoys. It is how an occupation can move beyond focusing on the right of the occupation to exist to how the camp can garner wider support from the community and not just be a stop for tourists passing through the city.

10:25 PM Crosby & Nash appear on “Countdown w/ Keith Olbermann”
10:10 PM Ohio voters soundly reject restricting collective bargaining rights. They vote “no” on Issue 2. Occupy Columbus was using their occupation to urge people to vote “no.” When I was there, a police officer said when SB 5 was repealed (what Issue 2 will do) he would donate a banner to Occupy Columbus. If the bold people of Columbus are still out there braving the cold weather, they should be getting a new banner soon.

6:36 PM Socialist Worker has report from someone arrested in Portland, Oregon on October 30 and November 1 (two separate police raids).
6:14 PM The situation with Occupy Vancouver continues to be interesting. Tensions are high. Now, police reporting that there are a few violent members of the occupation that punched, kicked and pit officers in recent meeting. The police also claim an ammunition clip was stolen.
5:22 PM Heartening story of a police officer, who was facing home foreclosure. He reached out to Occupy Atlanta, which the city had evicted from Woodruff Park. Many of the police were being used by the city to prevent them from occupying. Now, Occupy Atlanta has tents on his front lawn to prevent the sheriff from evicting his family from their home.
5:19 PM David Crosby & Graham Nash play Occupy Wall Street
4:48 PM H/t to FDLer TarheelDem, who has posted two important updates in the comments thread:
1) Occupy Mobile in Alabama was just pushed out of the park they were occupying. To contact the Mobile mayor and protest the eviction e-mail mayor@cityofmobile.org or call 251-208-7395 or send a fax to 251-208-7548
2) In South Carolina, Occupy Columbia is seeing the groundwork laid for their eviction. They are pushing back against charges that camping out is not constitutionally protected speech. (For more, go here.)
4:37 PM Occupy Wall Street gets its generators back, The Atlantic reports. And, as if that wasn’t sweet enough, what picked them up from the Fire Department? The WikiLeaks Truck.
4:11 PM Andrew Katz has an interesting report here on members of the Occupy Wall Street media team. On one hand, it makes me think of WikiLeaks because the members are operating a location off-site that no person is to know about (that especially goes for members of the press). On the other hand, the report is cheapened by Katz’s feeble attempt to show there is “hierarchy” here in a movement that is supposed to be “leaderless.” I don’t know if Katz gets it but I will just paraphrase something Michael Moore likes to say: “Everyone is a leader.” And, additionally, some people have roles to play in the movement and play them well so that the movement can continue to be organized.
4:09 PM Big rally at Occupy Providence. Firefighters are participating. The rally is at the statehouse and for defending pensions that are under attack.
4:07 PM Robert Greenwald and Brave New Films have a new project: “Who Are the 1%?” They put together this video for the campaign. People like you are to make videos that help to uncover who the members of the 1% are that are working against the 99%. This is all about not letting them live comfortably rich anymore. Afflict the hell out of them. Because fact is they have afflicted the lower classes for far too long.
2:25 PM Earlier today there was a “bomb scare” in Liberty Square. The police cleared the park steps in their effort to “secure” the area. A few occupiers were reasonably suspicious of this and wondered if there really was a bomb scare or not. One occupier, Hero, who has been arrested multiple times, was handcuffed at the top of the steps and arrested. Barriers were moved in to block off the area for inspection. The police reopened the “threatened” area of the park later. All seems to be back to normal. The big question is, how credible was the threat? Did they figure out who was behind the “bomb scare”? Or is the NYPD just keeping occupiers on their toes?
2:13 PM Bishop Gene Robinson of New Hampshire (who was part of Obama’s Inauguration) on “The Rachel Maddow Show.” He has been to Liberty Square and finds “people are mourning the fact that we have become a society that is every man, woman and child for themselves.” He thinks “this is huge.” He went to Occupy New Hampshire and thinks it is very important for people to get involved.
1:17 PM 9 more Occupy Fresno protesters were arrested last night. It is the third night in a row that police have made arrests as Occupy Fresno tries to re-establish a permanent camp.
1:13 PM “Golden parachutes” for CEOs can top $100 million. “These things can come back and bite you when the economy is down and you’ve got Occupy Wall Street…” says a compensation consultant.
1:12 PM City of Vancouver pursues a court injunction to remove Occupy Vancouver
1:10 PM Occupy Salt Lake is still occupying even though city wants them removed from the privately owned vacant lot, where they are located.
12:36 PM A thank you to the city and police in Birmingham, Alabama for letting Occupy Bham peaceably assemble.
12:34 PM Occupy Minnesota is coming together to support Monique White, who is fighting the foreclosure of her home. They put together a slick video and have rallies planned against US Bank CEO Richard Davis.
12:25 PM ICYMI: Comedian and “Real Time” host Bill Maher at Occupy LA: ”Don’t let them convince you to come inside, put on a suit and hire a lobbyist. That’s how you lose. This is how you win.” Video here.
11:23 AM Mayor Francis Slay of St. Louis issued a list of violations he believed Occupy St. Louis had committed. He told them they had to leave. Now, in response, the occupiers release a list of violations they believe Slay has committed as mayor.
11:03 AM Occupy DC has released this video showing a police officer putting his hand on the throat of a protester. This happened during a sit-in at the Metropolitan Police Department:
The DCist adds some context:
Metropolitan Police Department Chief Cathy Lanier said that the Occupy DC protests had gotten “increasingly confrontational and violent.” This morning, the Occupy DC media team has struck back, releasing the above footage of “a man that available witnesses have identified as a police officer” putting his hands around the throat of a protester on Friday night.

OT-for anyone who took my market advice to sell the market between Dow 12,100 and Dow 12,180, the Dow hit 12,130 this morning and is now at Dow 12,006. You should now place a stop where you are guaranteed not to go negative, i.e., lock in a small profit. Then you will be playing the position with “house money.”

And here’s the beef:
Huge thanks to whomever it was that called in to the Thom Hartmann show this morning and gave (charmingly) important information on the position of the Occupy movement with respect to nonviolence, procedures being implemented to discourage provocateurs.
Thom tried to rebut that one person who was confronting a policeman in a ‘violent’ manner (taking a door from the policeman who was holding it) was indeed part of the movement and not a plant.
I liked very much the response that when he had first joined the movement he too thought this was acceptable, but after being at many meetings the caller now knew nonviolence extended even to such innocent seeming actions as this one. The caller stood his ground, made his points, but was not confrontational; bravo to him!
To realitychecker @ 1:
How about getting out of the market completely? Isn’t the system broken?
The tents are wonderful. Talk about turning swords into plowshares. Be very proud, New York citizens; you are showing the way.
I think we are making an important top, and the market will go down A LOT. But I am a trader, and try to make money off of the swings back and forth, so for me there are always moves to make, buying or selling. It’s not for amateurs or part-timers. Right now, I can’t do anything for myself, because my only client’s trading account is at MF Global, and is now frozen.
Oops, Kevin already has it in the diary.
Huh. Bomb scare…that’s a new one. Although we know some kind of explosive was thrown into at least one #occupy location (was it Maine?). Not sure what to make of a bomb scare just yet.

Occupy Mobile has a scheduled 6:30pm scheduled general assembly. There are officers mounted on horses waiting for them to cross into park property.
LS – Occupy Mobile AL
Folks from Occupy Mobile have gone to talk to the horse cops about a conversation that they had with city hall folks.
They are now talking about a special needs person who needs help.
Now back to discussing the special needs person.
Police are emphatic that park is closed at dark.

The people there are picking up signs. And they are on the sidewalk for now.

Please, please, please?
Aloha, ya’ll…! I just posted my diary on Occupy Hilo’s First GA…

General assembly is not using a method. They are reacting with confusion. And serious divisions about what tactics to use in this circumstances. Caution versus those who want to push the envelope.
That is EXCELLENT and hopefully a new trend.

Occupy Pensacola is watching them on livestream and provided numbers for NLG lawyers in Pensacola. So they have already gotten support from Occupy Birmingham and Occupy Pensacola.
Kevin,
There are reports and allegations of rape and other sexual assault. (it probably doesn’t help that NYPD is apparently dropping off people straight from Riker’s and telling drunk belligerent homeless people to “take it to Zuccotti). Please don’t portray a serious violent crime as “copping a feel.” There is nothing cute about rape.
That might be my ONLY fave Kissinger quote.
Not only bc it’s funny, and when was Kiss ever funny (rhetorical).
But also bc it illustrates so blatantly that the U.S. gets involved in shit all over the world that has NOTHING to do with anything impt to U.S. except throwing its weight around.
Remember in 1990 when Texas A&M researchers announced a “cold fusion” or “Low-Energy Nuclear Reaction (LENR)” source then retracted suddenly? Well the commercial sale of a device just got made.
Thanks for saying that so well…It’s easy to make a slip.
Link?
And after you provide the link, could you critique the robustness of the accusations? That is, is there one source/incident or multiple, are the sources (police, not victims) named, did police provide evidence, etc.
IOW, please, when posting comments like that, add light, not just heat.
Thanks.
I remember that. Which is why I doubt the veracity of the accomplishment in your link on first scan. And why I have to investigate it further. Among other sources, I bounce these things off a HS classmate who teaches college astronomy, but who has substantial education and contacts in physics.
I admire the OWS protestors sooooo much. Reading about what’s going on is the only thing that gives me any hope for change in this country — not some crummy, hack politician like obama. If I were younger (I’m retired), I would be right there with them in NYC. I even joined an Occupy movement in my small town in California, but it’s pretty much falling apart.

Um-hum. Kewl. Looking forward to your report. If that gets out commercially, it really makes me wonder what the military labs have. Meanwhile, India is doing a Thorium reactor.
Sorry, forgot about “critique of robustness of accusations.” I find them credible — multiple reports, including one arrest. One of links talks about NY Post’s exaggeration of issue, but I haven’t seen any credible sources saying it’s not happening.
But my complaint is calling these allegations “copping a feel.” Any report that talks about the purchase of the tents in light of safety talks about sexual assault. I wasn’t there, I can’t say with 100% certainty what happened. But I CAN say that I find calling it “copping a feel” is offensive on every level.
LS – Occupy Mobile AL
There are two-four people who took it upon themselves to occupy the park without group consensus. They have sent an ambassador to see if they can talk them into coming back to the general assembly.
Thank you very much. Those links add a lot of context, and also the details that make them credible.
Thanks, in addition, for keeping track. It’s so easy to get carried away wrt such new and diff forms of protest.
The protests I’m used to were mass demonstrations in the 1960s/70s, daylight only. I’m in the learning mode about the pitfalls of the camping out form.
Agree after reading your links, as I explained in 67.

Just sent off an email with your link, which got kicked back to me. My friend might have retired, retiring his email, though for academics, their use of email addy seems to live on long after they retire.

America used to work The people had work. The system worked. It was far, far, from perfect -but we all had some share in the struggles AND the rewards. But somewhere along the way, we lost our way. Because now we have an economy and a political system that works only for the rich. We need to get back to what America was, and what it should be, and what it can be. You can beat us and arrest us -but you can’t kill an idea. You can’t keep down people’s hopes and dreams for a better life-a life with dignity and freedom , for us , for our kids. More power to Occupy Wall Street, as it spreads to every town and city – because OWS is us, and for us, and by us. With OWS America has found it’s voice, and it demands fairness and justice. This land IS your land! And we want it back! We want our lives back! We want our future back!

I’m not sure what your confusion/outrage is stemming from. Kevin is saying that non-penetrative sexual assault may precede penetrative sexual assault.
Is he using vernacular instead of clinical language? Yes. So? It may interest you to learn that “copping a feel,” is by definition a sexual assault, as it is inappropriate touching, since it implies a certain level of unawareness and is potentially/likely unwelcome.
Copping a feel is the same damn thing as groping. THE SAME THING! THERE IS NO FUCKING DIFFERENCE, SO IF SOMEONE THINKS THAT SAYING, “I was just copping a feel,” ENTITLES THEM TO AVOID GETTING KICKED IN THE NUTS AND REPORTED TO THE POLICE … I don’t even know how to continue.
Copping a feel is a sexual assault. End of statement.
THERE IS NO NEED TO SHOUT AT ME!! Yes, I know that “touching them sexually,” and “cop a feel” is sexual assault. I never suggested they weren’t or that a victim of a sexual assault isn’t entitled to kicking the perpetrator in the nuts or wherever and reporting him or her to the police — I’m not sure where you got that from. I was and still am offended at using “cute” terms for rape and sexual assault because words and language do matter. THE VERY FACT THAT YOU FIND YOURSELF SCREAMING AT ME shows that words matter.
And yes, I know, so there’s no need to tell me: despite the title “dissenter,” and despite all the talk around FDL about “those people at the orange website telling us to get lost,” the next suggestion will be for me to go elsewhere.
Well, for starters, I’m pissed off that people think that “copping a feel” is a “cute” term. It isn’t. Not to anyone on the receiving end. So the point needs to be hammered home that it is sexual assault.
The fact that you think it’s a “cute” term suggests that despite what you say, you do not in fact see it as equivalent to sexual assault.
I think we’re going to go round and round. I don’t think the action is “cute.” Ever. If someone said “he was touchie and feelie when she didn’t wantie-pooh” that would be describing the same despicable, criminal, action. But then I would say that describing it that way is trying to describe a violent crime using “cute” language. I guess by your logic you would say that my complaint would be saying that sometimes sexual assault is cute. All I am saying is that if it’s a violent crime, why the hell the cute language? Why not call it sexual assault?
And, since I follow many of the twitter accounts that Kevin himself follows/ has suggested, I know that he has seen that many occupiers are saying that the tents were purchased solely because of the sexual assaults, including several rapes — not because of the winter, although added warmth is surely a plus. I think the purchase was even made by the security Working Group, and not the Comfort one, though I may be wrong. So a blog post with the headline about tents that were purchased because of numerous violent sexual assaults including rapes, that are then described as women who are “afraid of men lurking to touch them sexually” and “cop a feel” is more difficult in a bigger tent (without even a mention that these violent acts have in fact occurred) was shocking.
But I will move on. I’m not going to become less bothered by the language, and neither the author nor you nor I gather most others understand my being bothered so there it is.
Whoa. Many of us that converse here live and expect non-violence as part of the social contract and norm. However, there are populations within our society for which non-violence is not the norm nor is it even an expectation. Living on the streets is one of those circumstances. The other ones happen to be a fair percentage of child care, foster care, adult-assisted living, elder care and the incarceration systems. The other obvious place is within the military. The bottom line is that no one deserves violence against them and no one deserves to deliver it.

Anyone still in this position should have a stop locking in a substantial profit now. And now ,back to the revolution, with, hopefully, some of you in a position to make a donation to the cause.
That’s a post!
Kevin, I want thank you for using the phrase you did. I would like to see the day where the majority of people and in particular the police recognize that it isn’t a “cute” term, and it is through the efforts of journalists like yourself that it will one day be recognized.
Anyone who thinks “copping a feel” is a “cute” term does a grave disservice to sexual assault victims as they further minimize the harm already done.
I apologize for my outburst of frustration and anger earlier. It was not directed at yoself in particular, rather at a broken system that has failed too many, but on reflection I realize that there were no clear indicators of that in my post.
But thank you for helping to change the narrative.
The social therapy #Occupy delivers is just fascinating and is having an effect in Canada as not only am I reading about it but have been hearing about it privately. The deep hypocrisy in the ‘Coove was just on display the other day when +6 white male Vancouver Fire Department and +8 Vancouver Police rushed over and extinguished the First Nation participants’ Council Fire (symbolic fire apparently built within a small, home version galvanized metal trash can to contain it and the ash generated).

The anti-female, anti-indigenous display is not going over well. In parallel, the business-as-usual dynamics of the vested interests that run the City are being challenged during this mayoral race as the people are voicing and demonstrating their displeasure rather than sitting and watching the puppet show.

Once again you’re confusing my reaction to language with a reaction to an action.
As I said before you started yelling at me, maybe this is a generational thing, and I planned on sleeping on it — and researching it (I don’t know how old you are, but I have a rough idea of Kevin’s age). I did discover that I’m not crazy, and that the term was used by teenage boys in the ’50′s (and I’m sure in the 70′s when I was a teenager ) to mean “heavy petting.” Consensual petting, that is. Or, the lack of being able to “get to second base” as in “I couldn’t even cop a feel.”

SO, these are my shoes: I read multiple tweets, articles and blogs (which, I’ll repeat I only follow because Kevin’s good reporting got me following them) about rapes and sexual assaults happening in Zuccotti Park. I read that one of the main ways that they were combatting these problems was purchasing large tents. I go to FDL and read about the purchase of the tents with language that to me was language of teenage boys used about how far they have gotten on a date. I write something about my reaction to this language. (and while it was described as “hot,” it was much cooler than the way I felt.) The language (of teenage boys on a date, in my experience) was defended by and repeated by the author. I then did see (before replying again — hence my “maybe it’s a generational thing”) that the language is also used to mean sexual assault (touching without permission), but if I have to look it up in an urban dictionary, I’m sorry, I still think it’s not a serious treatment of a serious crime. Then I’m yelled at by you ….
I’m not sure there’s any moral other than the fact that apparently I’m either too old or too female or too outspoken or too moody for this conversation on this blog. I’m a native English speaker, so I don’t plan on looking up every term I read to see how it’s changed over the years. So I can’t say that I wouldn’t have the same exact reaction the next time. Except, like I said originally, I’m certainly much less likely to bring up a grievance again, or less likely to even read the blog next time. And also like I said before, I believe that rape and sexual assault should not be referred to using slang. “Rape” and “sexual assault” are not “clinical” in my mind, they’re just honest and direct.
Please don’t confuse your personal difficulties and/or hangups with the good work and good intentions of those associated with this blog. You can check yourself, and still continue to participate here. That would be the most sensible way to proceed, IMHO.
