For the past six hours, it has been clear that the LAPD was building up for a raid on Occupy LA tonight. The biggest hint was the decision to hold a lottery for press that would be allowed into a “pool” that would be protected and allowed on the scene during the raid. Any media not in the “pool” would likely face arrest if they did not disperse from the area when police began to move in to make arrests.
The LAPD began to use Dodgers Stadium as a staging area. At the moment (9:30 AM), buses of cops are headed to Solidarity Park, where the LA occupation has been located.
Moments ago (about 12:36 PM ET), @DustinSlaughter
tweeted, “CONFIRMED: #Philly PD staging at Art Museum. From PD officer at museum. #OccupyPhilly is going to get raided.” He followed that tweet up with, “News media told to move vans offsite to make space for police action. Media crews on site, however. No media blackout.”

2:49 PM On my visit to Occupy New Haven – I look at how the space being occupied is owned by what is essentially an aristocratic body.
2:36 PM Video of man being beaten by LAPD for taking photos (LA Times has more details)
2:30 PM Number of arrests last night updated to 292 arrests in LA.

11:35 AM Possibly 20 or so arrests outside defense contractors conference in NYC. Occupy Wall St had planned to protest. More soon.
11:21 AM Watch Occupy London at #N30 strike here.
11:13 AM Boston city moving to evict Occupy Boston. The city just submitted a 200-page document in court that argues the occupiers have right to free speech but are not permitted to live on public property.
Court date on Occupy Boston is scheduled for December 1. For background, go here.
11:07 AM Occupy London is participating in major strike in UK today. BBC News has live updates on the national strike. Riot cops are currently at Piccadilly Circus where they planned to rally at 3 pm. About 300 people said to be gathering so far.

10:39 AM This is video from OakFoSho’s stream of man in tree that LAPD had to get down last night.
10:33 AM While Occupy LA braced for a raid, Occupy Philly was getting charged by Philly police on horses. Here is a video of last night’s action:
10:27 AM Philly Weekly, which did exceptional tweeting from the scene of Occupy Philly eviction last night posts this photo diary. And a Philly Weekly details almost getting arrested.
Press were not allowed to be anywhere near the police who were dismantling tents.
Additionally, Occupy Philly managed to negotiate with police to get a place for homeless population to go, since they had been living in “Love Park.”
10:26 AM Report from LA Times that streets around City Hall will remain closed today.
10:19 AM The story behind the white hazmat suits (picture below from @misterkong) is that Commander Andy Smith said “there were reports of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in the encampment (human waste, too). It’s a type of “staph bacteria that does not respond to some antibiotics that are commonly used to treat staph infections,” according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine.”
Occupy Bloomington reacted on Twitter, “Overkill. EMTs don’t wear hazmat for MRSA.” (h/t to TarheelDem who tirelessly posts updates in the comments threads of my live blog posts)

10:14 AM Official report is that at least 200 were arrested at Occupy LA. At Occupy Philly, there were at least 50 arrests.
4:59 AM – video shows the last dog — “Lucky” — being taken off to the pound. Lisa asks to take custody of Lucky, but police insist Lucky must be taken to pound until claimed by owner. Lisa: “I’ll rescue Lucky.”
4:54 AM Police extract last dog — yes, dog — from the last remaining tree house; four protestors had already been extracted by a crane, after being subdued by beanbag shots.
4:30 AM The video coverage in LA confirms that at least 4 shots (bean bag or rubber bullets) have been fired at protestors still holding out in trees houses. Large equipment has been brought in to dismantle and remove all structures.

3:21 AM Cops begin to move into park. They rush in quickly. No perimeter is formed around the park. No orders to disperse before moving in and forcing occupiers out. First arrests are being made right now.
3:15 AM Lisa reporting from LA: Approx 100 arrestees. 20 to 40 now left, arms linked. And dudes in trees Cops trying to gently disengage arm linkers At least one went limp and was carried out There may be three guys in tree. NLG says per KNX they were impressed by the police activity in park, very controlled and measured. Most protesters put hands behind back and were escorted out in zip ties. No word on weapons fired or not from our local media. Police used tunnels under the street into City Hall, which I had told ppl was a possibility. The LAPD came out of city hall and also surround park on all sides per those who were in park. As seen on ustream, some were in biohazard suits ( I wish I had one for the portapotties!). There were definitely bean bag shotguns. Cops still walking on Main St per KNX, a group of 100 them smaller group of 12
3:08 AM Homeland Security is being used to cordon off the perimeter and have replaced some LAPD units (via Jason Leopold)
3:05 AM Tent goes up in street in Philadelphia as Occupy Philly continues to march around. Police tear down. A few protesters broke through a barricade. Riot police move in on protesters. There are a few hundred protesters who are marching around and trying to hold their ground in the aftermath of their removal from Dilworth Plaza where they had been occupying for more than a month.

2:26 AM Los Angeles Times report on police/protester standoff unfolding. The report mentions city officials issued a citywide tactical alert. 12:00 AM Like Occupy Oakland before they were raided, Occupy LA is fortifying the camp (via @punkboyinsf)

10:16 PM I am keeping an eye on Occupy LA. Lisa Derrick is on the ground. If you are going to be following the action, I will be adding a livestream here soon. The situation is escalating. LAPD appears to be planning to go to war against Occupy LA and whatever they do to the occupation they will have the media feeling super vulnerable because they are going to be “outfitted in special protective clothing before the raid.”
LA Weekly has more on how the press have been handled. It is a must-read. There are a lot of clues in the post on how Occupy LA might be handled. LAPD is really going to go in with a big force. People nearby LA really need to go down there to bear witness tonight.
9:10 PM Pretty certain there will be a major police operation tonight and Occupy LA will get evicted. This is being reported now: ”City buses will be staged near City Hall between 8pm-4am tonight. City Employees are being asked allowed to leave early.” (via @OccupyLA)
9:00 PM 2 Occupy Phoenix protesters are cited for… illegal camping
8:55 PM Now Lisa Derrick has an update on the LAPD’s plans for handling press at Occupy LA

Thanks so much for covering like this!
Thanks Kevin. Great post and coverage.
I’m sure it is purely coincidence that two camps will be raided at the same time tonight, right? Right? Nevermind. They aren’t even trying any more.
If Mayor Villaraigosa wants Los Angeles to be “different” it’s not looking like that’s the plan. I mean—why is the riot gear needed? I can see the police getting off the buses on KCAL. Listening on livestream to Oakfosho, who describes “a crapload” of media over there. I hear music, I hear helicopters. Police cordon is at Broadway and 1st. He says “it’s probably going to be a long process.” If they passed out fliers warning that the park closes at 10:30, my guess is they’ll be moving in then.
Someone’s setting off fireworks over Occupy LA!
Really?!?
Looks like things are gearing up in LA … watching the livefeed from Oakfosho – glad to see the NLG observers ready. And loving Grandmothers for Change who are speaking now about why they are at OccupyLA and ready to be arrested.
Were they the people speaking out against military spending?
Yep … it was really good to see.
Across the UK, “Public sector strike set to be largest for a generation” (BBC.Co.Uk, 30 November 2011, Last updated at 01:58 ET)
I wrote a post last week about why the Tea Party people don’t gather in groups to fight cops, they like to do their killing alone where they have the superior force and they are the only one armed.
So, what at the odds that some asshole who just hates the police (and has not desire to help the OWS cause) starts shooting tonight?
The media that cover it will not see who the shooter is because it is dark. The good news is that there are still lots of cameras and video, but still the time between identifying the shooter and the finding out he is not part of OWS will be long and in the gap it will be > “OWS shoots at cops! Cops react with extreme force.”
This is my prediction. I’ve been 3 and 0 for predicting what will happen at OWS events.
I wrote some guidelines here about what do to if you hear about protester on Cop violence.
So if there is violence reported from the protesters DON’T ASSUME THAT IT IS TRUE.
The cops will not tell you the truth. The media get the official word from the cops, they are not going to investigate the identity of the shooter.
They will assume the side of the authorities who they are not embedded with and protected by. It will be “us vs. them” and the media are part of the Cop “us”.
Another innovation from Iraq comes home: media “embed” with the police so they can report from the police perspective rather than being allowed to roam free as the, you know, free press has traditionally done.
Whoever said patriotism was the last refuge of scoundrels had obviously not been exposed to current American attitudes toward children.
Came home a long time ago. For example, in 2008 at the RNC in St. Paul Amy Goodman was arrested and when she complained to police was told that she basically should have embedded so police could “protect” her and her crew.
11.40 pm.
What is the sitch in LA at this point?”
The damned vids above are not labeled or accorded to any sense of immediate essence.
WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPENING IN LA!!!
Argghhhh!
This is live shit, I want to know the the fuck is happening.
HUh?
Larue … it looks like the cops are waiting to move until after midnight so at the moment everyone is just waiting and watching.
I really appreciate Oakforsho id’ing the police with weapons – good work.
From OakFoSho live stream identifying officers with rubber bullet guns:
LAPD radio no longer in public transmit mode.
Pick one and watch
LAist confirms police scanner status (on Twitter here):
Watching for confirmation of this:
latest report – buses of cops on way from stadium
From OakFoSho live stream:
Who are the superiors of the “Public Information Officers.” LAPD?
Tina, press from Crooks and Liars, just on camera.
1300 officers (3 officers per person), 3 helicopters.
International and national press present.
LAPD now arrived in large numbers.
happening now … police pushing oakfosho our of way etc … moving really fast … have not heard warnings but police move is intense –
hearing Philly at same time
From OakFoSho’s live stream in Los Angeles:
Continuing to id and document names (and badge #s if possible) of officers with any arms. Officers in white jumpsuits with hoods some kind of biohazard handling group.

OK 4 am my time, must have sleep.
THD hopefully be back in a couple more hours.
From OakFoShos live stream in Los Angeles:
Police just escorted press out of the area. Media in a cordoned off “media area.” Two LRADs nearby.
Thanks, ny40something, and rest well.
I just wrote a post about what we can do if there is violence at the event.
If the Occupy LA or Occupy Philly evictions go sideways and the media start saying the protesters started it I have a few suggestions on how to respond.
Pre-Evictions Predictions & Post Evictions Suggestions If There Is Violence
These evictions might go fine, but as more and more actions are taken by cops who aren’t as well trained in an environment where the OWS can’t control who shows up, the potential for violence goes up and the media will not spend a lot of time sorting out the bad violent protesters from the good. It’s our job in the “new media” to help get the facts and correct the narrative that is put out by police spokespeople and an embedded media.
Was watching OccupyFreedom LA, single mom, on Ustreamfor a while. Now watching OakFoSho. Called a friend about going down there tonight, but he was already in bed. I decided to pass as well. This is a marathon, not a sprint, anyway.
What the LAPD is doing is wrong, in my opinion, and illegal, but they appear to be doing it less barbarously than in New York, Oakland, UC Davis, etc.

It was amazing to watch the number of current viewers on Oakfosho’s livestream steadily climb from 5,500 to 14,800[ish] during the LAPD action.

More from @OWSLosAngeles:
Good morning, all you freedom lovers.
For any who follow my market calls, there is no operative call as of this moment. The world’s central banks executed an extraordinary coordinated easing move during the overnight markets, obviating my earlier sell target, which will certainly be reached and surpassed when trading begins today.
The eviction in Boston is also imminent — the order was shown on Channel 5 there a moment ago.

Good Morning, RC.
I knew the US Banksters would bail out the European Banksters because they are one and the same. Goldman Sacs is Universal. As a matter of fact, they are on Mars too!
Occupy Boston: Occupy Boston Ratifies Declaration of Occupation
once again… just like the ‘repressive regimes’ the US continually bashes when they want the oil under their feet, the police state here executes repressive action under the cover of darkness in the middle of the night when no news crews are present OR, if they are, the domestic sheeple being fed from the corporate-owned media trough won’t see it until it’s all over and it can be edited and positioned in a way more fitting for the 1% owners…
KCET: Occupy L.A. Live Blog: Eviction Night
If you don’t have evidence, invent it with “health hazard theater”. It must be true because the LAPD had to bring out the hazmat suits.
US National Library of Medicine: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus; Community-acquired MRSA (CA-MRSA); Hospital-acquired MRSA (HA-MRSA)
And by the way, KCET had no mention that Occupy LA had a staffed medic tent.
There’s oil under LA City Hall? I thought they pumped all of that out in the 1940s.
After about 3-4 hours of sleep, back at the helm. I’ll keep updating this until the afternoon. Taking out the dead livestreams.
Really, their zeal to remain unseen says it all.
Morning, PP. The one thng we can always count on is that action will be taken to protect the reckless bankers.
Thanks for taking the night shift again, Kevin.

Socialist Worker: Labor War in Longview
The medic tent was hand delivered a load of supplies, including gauze, hydrogen peroxide, and tubes of antibacterial cream wiht individual wooden spreaders from FDL’s Occupy Supply by me, and a week later a friend gave me an additional gross of of individual-use neosporin packets.
Dan Milmo, Caroline Davies and Polly Curtis, The Guardian: Strikes over public sector pensions hit services across UK as 2 million walk out
That is equivalent to 10 million walking out in the US. Huge.
MRSR doesn’t respond to neosporin. But it does respond to soap and water. Unless it has gotten into the internal body systems like lymph, lungs, heart, etc. Most healthy adults will not get it unless a break in the skin causes it to become internal and the immune system doesn’t shake it. Info from my wife who worked in a nursing home, where community-based MRSR is endemic. Those with internal cases, especially lungs, can help prevent its spread by wearing a surgical mask.
It is hard to get. Hard to get rid of. And highly damaging in chronic cases. It is the US’s number one reason to try to avoid a protracted stay in a US hospital.
The liberal media. Hahahahaha! The embedded in the LAPD to raid a camp of peaceful protesters liberal media.
The most valuable resource for preventing the spread of community-base MRSR through the camp were the medics themselves and medical education of occupiers. Screening likely cases and seeing that a doctor checks them out and then taking precautions while preserving the dignity of the few who might have chronic cases would be a demonstration of how to deal with it.
As I said above, the City of LA’s action was nothing more than “health hazard theater” because the only legal justifications for shutting down the camp (and suppressing free speech) are health and safety. That is why every city looks for its own health and safety issues where there are none. LA just took the whole health and safety thing Hollywood.

Occupy Harrisonburg (VA) has a web site
Bail set at $5000 each to keep protesters from returning. If they have a record or warrants, release unlikely. At 9:30am, OLA and NLG trying to get bail reduced.
Soap and water were a problem at OLA. No running water. People would pool funds, rent a motel room and shower in rotation.
No problem. I was one of the people Storyful was following.

Occupy Phoenix protest of ALEC meeting
“At one point, a young man told a riot police officer: “If you give me a hug, I will leave right now.”
They officer responded: “Are you serious?”
“Yes,” the protester said.
The exchange continued, but the officer walked away without giving a hug.
Another protester, who had been watching, said to the officer, “He’s offering you a hug to leave right now, how can you do that?”
Afterward, when asked his name, the man who had asked for a hug said: “My name is ‘Occupy.’ ” ”
