Screen shot from "Collateral Murder" video
An Iraq war veteran, who is the focus of one of the short documentaries nominated for an Academy Award, is receiving death threats for providing his individual account of what happened during an incident that has come to be known as the “Collateral Murder” incident.
The incident received wide attention when WikiLeaks released a classified video of the incident in April 2010. It involves an Apache helicopter attack that happened on July 12, 2007 in Baghdad.
The attack is a major focus of,“Incident in New Baghdad.” The short film tells the story of a soldier who helped rescue two children injured in the 2007 Apache helicopter attack. The soldier, Ethan McCord, has since been discharged from the military and has been an outspoken voice against the Iraq War.
The film received an Oscar nomination in January. Since then, McCord has been receiving threats to him and his family on a regular basis.
The majority of the threats are coming from soldiers McCord served with in the 2-16 Infantry when he was deployed in Iraq. One soldier threatened to exterminate his “entire bloodline,” which McCord considers a threat to kill his children.
Many of the threats are being made on the Internet, especially on Facebook. Individuals in the group, 2-16 (and 4th IBCT) Vets for Truth, have been posting messages. Some of them are active duty military personnel. Making such threats against McCord is illegal.
Here are a couple examples of the threats:

McCord says individuals have consistently made threats against him since he began to tell his story a couple years ago, but the threats have escalated. He typically has regarded the threats to be the result of “bravado” and the fact that many of these people making threats likely are struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
“I did live with these guys for quite some time. I do know what they are capable of,” McCord says. “I’m challenging their views, challenging the actions of people and what’s the first thing that’s going to happen? They’re going to get angry.”
The possibility of violence has led McCord to purchase a handgun.
“I went out yesterday and I bought a handgun because I am deeply concerned and I want to protect my family,” McCord explains. “When you’re making threats to my family and my children, I will protect my family.”
There is a screening of the film tonight in Wichita, Kansas, where McCord lives. Some who have been making threats against McCord are planning to attend the screening. McCord says the screening will have to have additional security.
James Spione, the director of the film, is concerned about McCord’s safety. It is troubling to him that threats are being made and he has been following the chatter online. Yet, he believes there is a lot of misunderstanding and many misconceptions about the film. He hopes some of the people threatening McCord will take a moment to watch the film because maybe they will find it isn’t what they thought it was after all.
The film is not intended to be an authoritative story of everything that happened that day during the incident now known as “Collateral Murder.” It’s an incredibly “subjective” movie and the viewer really does get pulled into “Ethan McCord’s world,” Spione says.
“My intent was always to use [the incident] as a focal point for all of these subjective experiences and how one act of violence in a war ripples out through so many lives in a destructive way,” explains Spione. “And through that, as a microcosm, you’d start to understand” how war can be so “destructive.”
Spione spoke with some of the people making threats when he was doing background research on McCord. He told them about his plan to do a much longer movie with other viewpoints from soldiers other than McCord, who were involved in the incident. The much longer film would also include perspectives from Iraqi survivors like the mother of the children who McCord helped rescue.
One soldier who served in 2-16, Doc Bailey, who used to be a close friend of McCord’s, has been campaigning against McCord. McCord and Bailey had a falling out when McCord began to go around with antiwar activists and speak to classrooms of students about his experience in Iraq. Bailey sent him an email saying people were going to use him and spit him out. McCord replied that he was a grown man and could handle himself. Bailey became upset and ever since he has been calling attention to the work that McCord has been doing. In fact, he is the main person on the Facebook group posting videos of McCord and starting conversations about him.
Bailey and others say McCord is lying about what happened, but most of them will not say what he is lying about. One person is argues he “treated the kids and did the stuff” McCord has been saying he did during the incident.
There aren’t any lies in the film, Spione explains. There is just a lot of emotion. The guys who served with McCord are angry and they “take any criticism of the Army or the mission very, very personally.” And, every time the film goes up to a “bigger platform, it gets more attention and that gets people upset again.”
To really understand what is going on here, one shouldn’t get angry at the troops and start hurling insults back at them for threatening McCord. But, the threats are serious. The threats are likely symptomatic of PTSD that these people are experiencing.
“I would ask for some compassion for these guys. Some understanding of what’s going on,” Spione concludes. “We all know that we have a huge PTSD problem in this country. We have a huge veteran suicide rate still. These are like open wounds. We have a lot of guys walking around without treatment.”
Spione adds, “We like to keep our wars invisible but this is one of the ways they kind of pop up.” Hopefully, this film is an opportunity to have wider dialogue about these profound issues that people confront when they hear soldiers tell stories that conflict with what they think did or did not happen.
On a positive note, McCord went to Hollywood for an Oscar nominees luncheon. He spoke to Brad Pitt and got his picture taken with Pitt after Pitt’s publicist told him he was featured in “Incident in New Baghdad.” McCord says he saw Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese talk to Spione about the film.
“I think it is generating some buzz in Hollywood,” says McCord.
Additionally, a big-name producer is now interested in the film. The short film will likely expand into a much larger project after Academy Awards season is over.

Kevin,
I am trying to get others more knowledgeable about Executive orders and Constitutional Law to chime in on this: http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Executive_Order_12674
When there is an order from a President to report crime, fraud, and ethic violations should all Federal employees including military not follow through?
ICYMI:
From a little over a year ago but still interesting
The soldiers are threatening McCord because they don’t feel good about what they did and never will. McCord is very brave to do this and I hope that he and his family will be okay. And I pity the troops who are suffering from this whole farce of a war.
The horror is that they only way they will ever feel any better is by acknowledging the truth of what happened. But they’re so committed to protecting their private hells, they’ll kill to maintain them.
So . . . conservatives.
All of it is sadly tragic from beginning to end. Wish McCord all the best and hope for his safety and safety of family.
It’s not ususual for people to respond this way, esp those in the miliary who, for better or worse, are warriers trained in the use of violence, in essence to “solve” problems. They are angry, so they turn to violence.
Added to this is the fact that, our nation is on another upswing of punishing whitleblowers, esp under the Obama admin (lying liar said he’d behave just the opposite but has doubled-down on how Bush behaved).
Thanks for the post.
Im am sorry for all these guys and hope McCord will be careful. Mostly I hope our bellicose country will learn something about the evils of war and our lethal addiction. Where are the peacemakers?
many of these people making threats likely are struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
While I expect this may be true of some, others are truly psychopathic . . . expect they will either return to their communities and serve as the new ‘bully on the block’ law enforcement officers . . . or go into politics.
Ethan rescued two wounded children from the carnage that day. He is a hero as well as a Truth Bearer.
He has helped many young people think through the choice of going into the armed services and what it means ethically to commit to war for the USA at this time. He is a true Peace Maker.
He is a genuine Witness for Peace in a time of war mongering international empire.
Yes, no doubt a bit of both. But the incident throws some light on the freicorps who terrorized German leftists after World War I. They were trench survivors.
Very good article Kevin, thanks. I hope for Ethan’s success and safety.
From the video he seems like an honest, caring, person who found out the truth about the war and is making amends for his part in it. I wish him well.
I also read the article on 5,200 Pentagon employees suspected of porn and think what a bogus lie so they can investigate their employees. What are they worried about that they want to search ALL their employees? Trying to stop whistle blowers, Anonymous, trying to stop an Arab Spring from happening here this spring/summer/election cycle???
We are ALL SUSPECTS ALL THE TIME now and they want us policing each other, according to this article:

Thanks for this post, Kevin. I visited the 2-16 website you linked to above and there are lots of hate-filled and threatening comments there. Hating for being shown a little of the truth, and hating McCord for reminding them of it. Hating it because their image is tarnished, hating it because they fear not being able to play the ‘brave patriot defending America’ anymore. They sure seem to stick together.
If they had any real, or honest, solidarity with their brothers & sisters of the armed forces, they would get behind Veterans for Peace or some other such organization working to get our men & women out of there, and really save some lives. But no, the only solidarity they have is to their own little clique.
OT– Citizen testimonies still in progress regarding the behavior of the union, Portland Police Bureau, that is on contract to serve the City of Portland:
The testimonies are heart breaking especially from the African-American community. One person is discussing police practice of “Walk and Talk” (verbal and physical search without warrant), how it is unrecorded and is being targeted at African-American and Latino minors at the rates of 1 in 3 and 1 and 7 respectively. “Why does death have to be the outcome?” of police interactions with young Black men and the mentally ill?
And Gingrich wants to put a base on the moon? Who can afford that? Is that why Rumsfeld said a few months back that the military budget is only 4% of GDP and should be 10%. We have seriously crazy fanatics in our gov/mil, we really do.

DOJ rep now talking to the group and urging citizens to document police behavior and speak up. Now US Attorney for Oregon addressing citizens assembled. Civil Rights Div. of DOJ has project open for Oregon on this topic and will be at next meeting next month and will be flying in from DC. Meeting close to a wrap.
I attended the screening in Wichita last night and McCord and James Spione There were about 300 people in the theatre and some people were obviously not very happy with McCord but he didnt back down from what he said in the film. A very impressive evening.
Sounds like a profoundly moving experience. Did many of the people opposing McCord claim to have served in 2-16? Or in the military? They were gunning for McCord in the run-up to the screening.
More likely, they feel nothing at all about what they did and are simply afraid enough exposure will warrant an investigation and trial.
Sadly, these people may be serious in their death threats, and they know that they can get away with such things:
When Congressman John Murtha demanded an investigation of the cowardly massacre by US Marines at Haditha, hundreds of sites supporting the Marine War Criminal cowards called for Murtha’s assassination. Then, Murtha was taken to Bethesda Naval Hospital where a blade was used to cut his intestine, killing him.
The type of surgery Murtha had usually requires no blade – laparoscopic.
There has been no investigation.
It’s the same hospital to which CIA Director William Casey was rushed on the very day he was scheduled to testify about Reagan’s and GHWBush’s involvement in the Iran-Contra complications.
Like Murtha, Casey died of complications.
Ethan McCord is an American hero. Those threatening him are examples of Homo Americanus – the New American Man, dedicating to using violence and threats of violence on behalf of our corrupt oligarchy.
I am so sick of reading posts like the ones posted on that 2-16 site that characterize US servicemen and women in Iraq as “fighting for freedom” and “wanting respect for fighting for freedom.”
First, I don’t think any US soldier over there is fighting for freedom– ESPECIALLY in Iraq which was never even a threat to us.
US service-people are fighting for the interests of international corporations, and that is hardly an activity that commands respect.
Your post made me look Murtha up on wiki. Citizens for Responsibility (Crew) and Ethics in Washington listed him on the top 20 and top 5 list of most corrupt pols because of earmarks and steering defense dollars to his lobbying groups. Murtha convinced the military to change to MultiCam camouflage uniforms. 2 days after he died the military announced they would make the change. Who got the contract??? I always wondered why so many Senators, Represenatives, pols, etc went to the war zone. Now I figure they are just making deals for gov contracts. So we are not asking the correct questions during campaigns. We should ask who are you making deals with to get gov contracts. I have NEVER heard this question in a campaign, WHY NOT?
TWOOPH!
Can’t be said enough!
I don’t blame our enlisted Military personnel. I blame civilian leadership, Pentagon heads, and those that know better.
One of the main problems I see with Iraq and Afghanistan Vets coming home is the disallusion they feel because what they have been told in the arena of war is so different than what is being said to Americans at home.
We Americans have never been a part of our current wars and they made DAMN sure of that. They willingly and purposely killed or maimed any war reporter no matter which country they were from. These wars have been played on the secret and did not need support from American citizens other than our tax dollars!
